Visited the place in Dec. with family after a very long time , but this time went with a professional guide Pankaja . worth the guide .
it was a refreshing experience for me although lived in Mumbai almost most of my life.

Must place to visit for tourist to the country, city .

The boat ride is also an experience by itself.

This is a truly beautiful cave, and it actually feels more like a temple. The various statues of Shiva are exceptional, particularly the many-faced one. An exceptional place, unlike the other caves, which are not as rich.

The trip is worth more than the caves. While the caves, sculptures and carvings are quite impressive (and almost 2500 years old), particularly cave 1, even if they are a bit eroded. Nonetheless, this requires a boat ride across from Mumbai which is quite pleasant, and the island itself is nice. Thankfully, the amount of shops and sellers up the quite steep stairs mean that there is constant protection from the sun from the harbour to the caves themselves..

Its a nice work of art considering the statues were sculpted in the 4th century with minimal or no equipment. No tourist guide required. Lots of souvenir stalls on the 122 steps that lead to the caves. Like any tourist destination, you need to haggle and settle for half the quoted price.
The first three caves are worth a look, the remaining two are a passé. Only worth the trip if you want to look at what is considered a world heritage by UNESCO.

A nice get away from the maddening crowd of Bombay. Time worth spending at the actual caves is 2 hours or less.

We enjoyed our private tour with Nitin, one of the locals. Although the caves are officially closed on Mondays (the day we were there), he took us to two of the caves, which were still accessible (if you know where you're going). The caves themselves were not spectacular, with the statues either removed and relocated elsewhere in mumbai or eroded beyond recognition. However, Nitin also takes you to his local temples and shrines, telling you interesting facts and stories along the way about the different Hindu gods, relating also to the statues in and around the sites. We happened to arrive on the day of Ganesh festival so we're lucky enough to get a free blessing at the temple, along with some tasty prasad (blessed fruit and locally-made indian sweets). Nitin is a relaxed and non-pushy guide. We paid 550 rupees for around 2 hours for two people (which included entrance fee and toilet fee). Although the caves were not great, we enjoyed the rest.
