“Escaping Mumbai!”

If you are like me that prefer sightseeing than shopping this is your option. You can buy water at the island. The boat ride takes about 1 hr by. Recommend hat and sunglass. Stretch and get ready to go up 125 steps through a tunnel of bazaars. If you want to shop get prices on your way up, visit the cave and start barging in your way down. Be strong and offer 50% less and start walking away slowly. You will see that they will agree on your offer.
Better, if you have the time (1 full day 5:30 am to 10 pm) and some extra bucks you should go to Arangabad and visit the Ellora caves instead. It is worth every penny expended.

“Site virtually ruined by hawkers”
Reviewed January 11, 2013

The best part of the trip is the boat ride, which offers nice views and a welcome escape from hoards of people! Once you get to Elephanta though, be aware that there are lots of extra little fees and it's a walk up a steep staircase to get to the site. Staircase itself is lined with hawkers (totally disgusting intro to the place).

The site itself had to the potential to be lovely, but we were completely not in the right mood to appreciate it. A drunk man followed us around for most of our time there, until a very nice Indian gentleman told him to bugger off. If you can't reach Ajanta and Ellora this might be worth a trip, but bring all your patience.

“Nice escape from the horns of Mumbai”
Reviewed January 10, 2013

It's beautiful, interesting and relaxing - a nice change of pace from Mumbai! There are two full excavated really intricately carved caves. All of the carvings were done directly out of the rock - even the pillars. Some of the carvings are damaged - supposedly the Portuguese used them as target practise. There are some other less developed caves where there are also places to sit in the shade and watch the monkeys.

It's about an hour's boat ride away from the Gateway of India, there's loads of stalls selling touristy stuff, a restaurant at the top which is a bit grubby but the food is good (I'd recommend vegetarian though as I'm not sure how fresh the meat is)

“nice trip, longer than expected though”
Reviewed January 9, 2013

Elephanta Islands is a nice half day excursion out of the crazy city. The boat ride is about 1hour 15minutes each way and is nice views but very dirty water (as usual) Once on the island there were more fees than my friend and I thought. It is Rs150 (roundtrip) for the boat ride, Rs5 tax upon arrival, Rs10 if you don't want to walk and take the mini train to steps to the caves, and Rs250 (foreigners) entrance to the caves. The first cave is absolutely beautiful and was not expecting it be that interesting, but caves 3-5 are kinda just there! It is a nice few of the surrounding islands and the ocean once you climb the long staircase to the cave entrance though. Just make sure you plan at least 4-5 hours to make this trip!

“A recommended half-day trip from Mumbai”
Reviewed January 9, 2013

Created in the 6th century, the Elephanta caves are located about an hour away by boat from the Gateway of India. Boats start at 9 am going there, and return boats starts at 12 pm on the island until 5 pm. Boats take off whenever they are full, so there really is not a fixed schedule. The boat ride affords an excellent view of the Mumbai skyline, and probably the best vantage point to view the iconic Gateway of India and the nearby Taj Mahal Palace hotel. The island itself is not large, and one can cover caves #1-5 within an hour. The rest of the island doesn't have that much in terms of cave carvings. Pieces of art from the caves can be found in the Prince of Wales museum in Mumbai. There are many people selling trinkets on the island, and touts offering services as guides.
