Basicly is just some big holes in the walls. You pay 250 for entrance and 130 for the boat. And it takes you at least half a day.
Without a guide who you have to pay 250 more you will not have any clue about the things there.

The best part were the monkeys. Thou they were quite agressiv and jumped on an old lady, she feel and started crying. So keep distance!!

I went to the caves with my family in January. The ferry ride started from Gateway of India and was the best part of the trip. The caves itself are ok and much more can be done to make the trip more attractive. Most of statues are worth looking at.

On the return trip, the ferry left us at some dockyard for the ferries and not at Gateway of India. Did cause a lot of confusion due to this.

Very clean and peaceful relative to Mumbai, highly recommended, I can see why it is a World Heritage Site. Be nice to take have a picnic there, just be careful of the monkeys! Have to walk up some stairs but they are lined with stalls which makes the climb more leisurely, if you do struggle can hire people to carry you up.

Loved the ride out across the bay and the approach up to the caves. Main cave is stunning and very atmospheric. Hundreds of people there and a great glimpse of indian families on a day out.

We visited Elephanta island and caves by taking the early ferry from the Gateway of India. The first ferry is supposed to be at 9am but they seemed to be going long before this. The journey takes 45 minutes to an hour and is a leisurely boat ride over Mumbai Bay and gives good views of the city from the sea. When you dock at the island jetty you will be surrounded by guides offering their service for a few hundred rupees or you can buy a guide book for about 100 rupees. Both are good value if you want to know all about the caves of which there are about seven main ones. Allow about two hours for exploring or more if you want to walk around then catch any ferry back which are about every 15 minutes. It is a cheap way and enjoyable way of seeing a different side of Mumbai.
