Kalaripayattu is perhaps India's only indigenous martial art. This is a good place to see what actually is Kalaripayattu. It has two back to back shows, first one being Kathakali follwed by Kalaripayattu. Show starts at around 5 PM and the place is about 10 kms from the city of Munnar. Make sure that you make prior reservations.

Punarjani Traditional Village: We saw the Kathakali and martial arts shows. The "theatre" was a bit cramped, but on the other hand we were in close proximity to the performers. A bit touristy (lots of flash photography during the performances) but it was good to get a first taste of what it is all about. Both the Kathakali and martial arts shows last about an hour, but half hour each would have been enough for us.

Tip: 15 mins before the Kathkali performance and actor is on stage applying his makeup. After the show they let you on the stage to take photos with the performers.

My boyfriend and I went there and had a wonderful moment. The show is really impressive and well realized, with all sorts of weapons. Very good and the atmosphere as well. Performers were of all ages and involved the public in the show. To be short it is really nice to see, and since it is traditionnal from Kerala even more.

We only attended their " Kalarippayattu " show .

As we were travelling with young kids we decided to see one show only.

The place was very professionally managed. My inquiries on the phone were answered promptly and courteously. They even offered to hold first row seats for me without any advance being paid.

The Kalarippayattu theater can seat around 200 and the design of the theater ensures that you have a good view of the arena no matter where you sit.

The show itself started on time. The artists ranged from those highly experienced in their art to learners. The sequences performed by one and all had dedication to the art reflecting in their moves.
It was a treat to watch.

After the show they let you have a photo op with the artisans too .

It was very enjoyable and a great way to spend the evening.
