“Beautiful, boutique hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 9, 2013

We stayed for 2 nights towards the tail end of our India trip. It was the best place we stayed whilst in India and it rejuvenated our spirits after a couple of weeks of non-stop travelling.

Gorgeous, tastefully decorated room. It was very spacious and comfortable and spotlessly clean.

The service was excellent, with nothing being too much trouble and the chef cooked us beautiful meals, which we enjoyed eating on the balcony and also on the rooftop restaurant.

Laundry service was very good and computer with internet is available in the lobby.

We were also upgraded to the Alpine Suite during our stay as there were no other guests at the time. Thankyou!

My partner and I stayed at Swiss Country's Alpine sweet for 2 nights early Jan 2013, and had a fantastic time.

The room (Or shall I say, living quarters?!) is huge - living room, kitchen (small fridge, full sink, microwave, and extended eating area with 2 chairs), bedroom area, balcony and an extremely large bathroom. All areas were very clean, modern and designed in an Ikea-inspired fashion.

The restaurant on the top floor is simple, quiet and serves DELICIOUS food for dinner. We relied on the recommendations of the hotel staff when ordering (curries, keralan specialties, and lots of dosas and parathas) and loved everything. (I have a very sensitive stomach and did not get sick at all.) Breakfast was a bit more bland if you opt for the western meal, and I avoided all freshly squeezed juices even though they were offered part of the set menu.

The hotel staff was kind, always eager to please, but didn't have a lot of knowledge about non-touristy destinations in Munnar. (Much like Samer's previous review, we too went to the Ayurvedic massage recommended by the hotel, and it was not the best experience. The rooms were dingy, the "massage" was more like an oil slathering, and we ended up stinking like french fries for days.)

One important note is that the hotel is located about 30 minutes away from Munnar Town. This means a lot more driving to see the (slightly underwhelming) tourist sites, but it also allows you to enjoy the serene views of the tea plantations from your balcony. I highly recommend walking through the nearby tea plantations!

We spent two nights at Swiss County in early January 2013 and I have mixed feelings about the place.

Pros:
- The view is stunning from the rooms and we had a beautiful private balcony overlooking the beautiful mountains
- Service at the hotel is excellent and the staff are very helpful and the they went out of their way to make sure our stay was good
- Internet was free (but extremely slow and very choppy)
- The food was delicious and reasonably priced and had a good selection
- Included breakfast was good - not a buffet but they allowed you to select anything from the menu and it would be included.
- Room service for all meals was free, including breakfast. Having our breakfast on the balcony of our room was a delight.
- The rooms are very clean and nicely decorated
- The place feels very cosy
- The rooftop restaurant is very basic in decoration but has a very night open terrace area that is great to enjoy the view (you can ask for your table to be moved to the terrace).

Cons:
- The place is LOUD - you would expect that the area is up in the mountains and should be peaceful to match the beautiful scenery. We had to keep the windows closed most of the day because of the honking of the passing cars/trucks on the road as well as the nearby noice (not sure if it was some sort of workshop or if it was construction).
- FOOD POISONING - though the food is delicious, my fiancee got violently ill after eating at the restaurant. She suffered for almost 5 days with severe symptoms and I had to take her to the hospital because she was dehydrated and weak. WATCH WHAT YOU EAT.
- Though the staff was generally friendly and tried to accomodate us with later check out when they learned that my fiancee good food poisoning from their food, they had us pay for all our meals and offered nothing as an apology for what happened. That was seriously disappointing.
- The place is SERIOUSLY out of the way. We spent abot two and half hours driving from Cochin airport to the place with a cab driver who was driving fast on extremely winding roads with his hand on the horn the whole time. We were seriously nauseated by the time we got to the hotel.
- My financee and I had asked for a nearby spa to go for a massage and we were referred by the hotel to (I am not exaggerating) a shack close by where the 'massage therapists' (if we could call them that) literrally drenched us with what smelled like cooking oil to the extent that we were dripping oil and gave us one of the worst massages we've had in our life. There were some cab drivers and random people hanging outside the shack chatting loudly and playing loud Indian music on a car stereo. I left the place more stressed out than I got in and was quite disgusted with myself from all the dripping cooking oil on me. I understand that the place is not operated by the hotel, but being referred there by the hotel was again seriously disappointing.

All in all, though the scenery is nice and the hotel staff are friendly, given how loud the place is, how out of the way it is, the food poisoning issue and the miserable spa experience, I would not recommend this hotel (or Munnar in general) because there is nothing to do there at all. We would've been ok with that if we would've been able to get some peace and quiet.

We recently stayed at Swiss County for one night as part of an 8 day tour with In Love with Kerala. The hotel is perched on the side of a hill with magnificent views across the valley and to the hills beyond. We were greeted my friendly staff and served fresh juice while checking in. Our room was on the ground floor which, consists of two separate en-suite rooms with a shared living room parlor/living room with couches an large flat screen TV, DVD player and surround sound. Our room was spacious, with a Queen bed, desk chair and minibar in one corner and another small table and chair on the other side. There was also a nice flat screen TV. The far wall was all windows (with curtains to close for privacy) with double sliding doors opening onto a private balcony. We had a beautiful view of the hills from the bed and/or the balcony. The bedroom and bathroom were well thought out/planned, tastefully and modernly furnished/decorated and MOST IMPORTANTLY immaculately clean!

We had dinner and breakfast on the rooftop restaurant and terrace. The food was served without delay and was of good quality.

All the staff were friendly, efficient and professional.

We stayed here from 14th-16th Jan..it was excellent. Very good for couples and small families. Its the perfect place to get away from all the noise and be surrounded by mountains and greenery. Since we were on our honeymoon, they also offered us a complimentary candle-lit dinner. The food was good and served under the stars. The view from the balcony is awesome and it has a small table and two chairs. The mini bar and kitchen area are well maintained. The living room has a good LCD screen with tata sky and comfortable sofas.,They also have free Wi-Fi which is great considering usual hotel charges. There are a few spice-plantations, elephant rides and lots of tea plantations located 10-15 mins away by car.
Only thing that was a little bother was that their bathroom drain is clogged up and takes some time to clear out. I'm sure the room service would help in this regard- they are very efficient and friendly. Overall - fabulous stay!!

Room Tip: Alpine Suite definitely. It has a great balcony and the view is very good.
