“"Not feel like leaving the place"”
Reviewed April 14, 2012

Kaivalyam Retreat in Munnar is a lovely place. We stayed for 4 nights (Apr, 9th thru 13th 2012). The owner, Mr.Harish and the staff provided great service with true sincere smile. We did not feel like leaving the place at all and wanted to stay for some more days! They displayed simple true warmth. The food was great too. Mrs.Harish was out of town attending classes at a Yoga Training School for teachers. The staff said that when she is at the Retreat, the food would be the best. We missed it, though. You can spend a few hours within the 12 acre property going for a walk with a guide that the Kaivalyam Retreat provides.
The room was clean and comfortable. For once, I could stay in a room that really looked like it does in the photographs. There was a little problem with the flow of hot water in the shower due to what they called an "air lock" that happens occasionally in pipelines. When I called up and informed them, the staff immediately attended to it in no time and made it ok. This is real service. How the staff respond to problems distinguishes them from others. We liked the walk very much.
I am a consultant who travels frequently. I have stayed in many hotels in Europe, US, India and few other countries. Kaivalyam Retreat is one of the best I have ever stayed in. For foreign travelers visiting India, this would be a good place. The breakfast includes both continental and Indian. The place is strictly vegetarian and non-smoking. They serve no alcohol. You can learn and practice yoga, rejuvenate yourself with nature all around you, with little noise and bustle, go for a walk in their spice garden, meditate and generally rest your body & mind. You must leave your footwear outside when entering the reception area or even your room. I liked it very much.

My husband and I stayed 3 nights at the Kaivalyam Retreat and I wish we could have stayed longer. We were collected from the main road and taken by jeep down to the retreat which is set in the hillside. As soon as we arrived we could feel the gentle calming energy in and around the place. The retreat is well designed and set in beautiful suroundings with no noise or light pollution, just wonderful sounds of the forest. Our room was clean and comfortable, beautifully furnished with a great view of the forest. The vegetarian food was excellent and really tasty with plenty of choice. The gardner provided a guided tour of forest and spice trail and the walk through the tea plantation to the waterfall is really worth doing. The early morning yoga sessions are worth waking up for as the open sided yoga hall is set in the beautiful grounds and you can see the sun rising.
The staff were really friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them. What really makes this place so unique is the owners, Harish and Anju. Thier gentle calm nature just puts you at ease and they go out of their way to make sure all your needs are met. It was a pleasure to meet them and to stay in this outstanding retreat. We wish Harish and Anju the very best for the future.

Room Tip: We stayed in a groundfloor room right at end of the building and it had a fabulous veiw of the fore...

My wife just changed the best holiday ever from our Yercaud trip of 2010 to this one and that should say it all. Great accommodation, great food and great people to be with.

However, I want to leave you with a piece of advise with others have mentioned on this forum but I couldn't quite comprehend. The road leading to the place has a slope exceeding 45 degrees and it is 700 meters from the main road. Only 1 vehicle can be on the road at a point of time and hence you don't want to be going one way with another vehicle going the other way at the same time. Best solution (however great a driver you may be) call the retreat from the main road and get them to send the jeep up if only to ensure the road is clear and you have an escort.

Room Tip: The rooms on the first floor have a great balcony

We loved this place! It is very quietly situated (no dogs, no traffic noise), excellent food (there is always a choice between three different starters and mains). A very comfortable and clean room with a privat balcony and a great shower. The owners are very friendly and helpful and they seem to understand what todays travellers need and appreciate. The information they provide is correct. The facilities they offer work. There is shade and sun spots throughout the day. We spent 4 nights which we though is sufficient for a combination of activities and some relaxation. This place is higly recommended and we honestly liked Munar so much mainly because of this accomodation. Is there nothing wrong? The only thing which is missing is a showercurtain. Because of this the toilet is wet after using the shower :(

Munnar has more than its fair share of terrible places to stay but this place is definitely not one of them. The owners were fantastic and the place exudes an aura of calmness. We were on the honeymoon package and one night we were to have our room decorated. I thought this would be quite tacky so was very surprised to find the room had been beautifully decorated with flowers, petals and candles. The room itself was very nice. Large and freshly decorated. The food was also fantastic. My wife also took advantage of the morning yoga sessions. All in all I would say that this place offered the best value for money of any place we stayed in our 3 weeks in Kerala.

My husband and I had been traveling for 4 weeks when we arrived at Kaivalyam. The retreat is set in the cool hills of the area surrounding Munnar. The cooler temperatures was a welcome relief after 4 weeks of very hot weather. The forest and plantations surrounding the retreat are beautiful! The gardeners were always working on the surrounding gardens that included many types of flowers and plants. The retreat offers a few walks that are guided. There is a cardamon plantation surround the property, this was one of the walks offered as well as a walk to the river and a walk through the tea plantations to a water fall. Yoga is offered in the early morning at 6:30 am. It is a great way to start the day in an open air yoga studio! The breakfast is also included in the price of the room. The food is vegetarian and simply delicious. Lunch and dinner are both available with the menus changing every day. The rooms were spacious and bright with an indoor/outdoor patio area. The beds were the most comfortable we have had during our 7 week trip!
