If you haven't visited Jain temples anywhere else, then this will be pretty special. You'll be one of hundreds of people climbing the 3500 steps up to the temples and being part of that is pretty special. However - unless you run up (and down) large hills / 3500 steps every day of your life be aware that you will be in pain for a week after and if you have visited other temples (e.g Ranakpur or the like) this wont necessarily top those experiences.

I visited Palitana on our way to Ahmadabad. I was shocked to find that the place was so dirty. Mountain of rotten coconuts was left on side of main temple and was so smelly. Why holly places are always dirty. I went and see the official about coconut west and requested to get rid off in the forest for nature to take care. I was even prepared to pay for the cost but seem like passing bug within officials!!!!!!As a Jain I think something like this should not happen as it creates insects. I was very disappointed and decided to remain quite. I thought I will find inner peace but I was very upset to see how dirty the temple yard was. On the first level of the temple people were walking on the discarded flowers from previous day. However if you like Jain Temple you must visit once. Temples are magnificent. Nearby was another complex of temple and was going under major restoration. Gold work and stained glass were amazing. Place was full of saints and devotees. We both were very tired when reached Ahmadabad. The place is very good if the Trustees maintain cleanliness. We Indian has to learn a lot about how to look after our heritage.

A must visit place for all Jains.
The Jain's sacred site of Shatrunjay contains hundreds of temples. The hills were sanctified when Lord Rishabha, the first tirthankara of Jainism, gave his first sermon in the temple on the hill top.The ancient history of the hills is also traced to Pundarika Swamy, a chief Ganadhara and grandson of Rishabha, who attained salvation here. His shrine located opposite to the main Adinatah temple, built by his father Bharata, is also worshipped by pilgrims.
They are situated on the banks of the Shetrunji River at an elevation 2,121 feet (646 m) above sea level.
Devotees either climb the hill or hire dolis to carry themselves.
