“Interesting zoo”

Sakkarbaug Zoological Gardens

The zoo is a short ride from the town centre, 30/40 rupees in a shared rickshaw, and really not bad compared to other zoos I've visited. There is a good educational display in the Orientation Centre and, although some of the enclosures seemed a bit small, none of the animals seemed 'stir crazy'. The zoo staff appear to be making a good effort here.

There are plenty of animals to see, including leopards and Asiatic lions, tigers (one is a beautiful white tiger) many different birds, antelopes, snakes, fish, a few unusual monkeys, crocs, and a lovely shady garden with plenty of seating and paths lined by huge palm trees. Snacks are available and the toilet block was very clean.

As well as the zoo enclosures, there is a sort of 'safari park' behind, which you can visit in a small bus. We didn't visit this part of the zoo as there were a lot of school groups visiting at the time.

I went there to try the safari, but is wasn't availible, so checked out the zoo. It is very cheap (20 rs), but the fascilities are cruely small, and I found it heartbreaking to see the big cats in such small enclosures.

If you can make it to Sasan Gir it is well worth the money and effort compared to this place, if you can't I guess its an reasonable substitute, but don't expect more than animals in rather small cages.

All the Cats at one place, decent collection of birds. Crocodiles, gharyials, Hippo if its not submerged. Also offers a 30 min trip in a semi forest kind of setup. Children should have a great time.

The zoo is in the process of expansion (supposedly to meet the newer norms of locating the animals in large open areas, some like deers have already been moved while others like lions and tigers are in the process).

It covers a large variety of animals, but the stars of the zoo are the lion, lioness and the royal bengal tigers and tigress. The male tiger looked really huge and seemed to be more ferocious than the neighboring lion. And there are wolves, striped hyena, sloth bear, leopards.

There's a small area having a few varieties of birds like stork.

The zoo covers a small garden with open lawn.
