We saw 2 lions which was great, but not much else except for deer. We were hoping for more birds. Organizing the safari is a bit of a trick. As the park only gives a certain amount of permits, you have to pay gypsies to stand in line overnight. Better not to do it yourself as they have a whole system worked out. You also need to find others to share the costs. Our hotel did not provide the service, but it's a new place and there were hardly any other guests. The safari was pretty short as they have 3 per day. Definitely take the earliest for any chance of seeing lions., but by 9 the jeep has to leave the park for the next groups to start.. Would have liked a longer ride.

I spent 5 game drives in the Gir NP in november.
On each of these drives I saw several lions. On one occasion a mating couple, which was the most exciting sighting of course :)
The downside of this park is that as soon as Lions are spotted near the road, the park rangers drive up to them and "guard" the animals.
Other animals you can see are spotted deers, sambars, crocs, mongooses, leopard (we saw one during ... 2 seconds),... and plenty of birds as well.

Worth a visit for sure.

Best route by road from ahmedabad is via limbdi, chotilla, rajkot, gondal, junagadh, mendarda and sasan gir. Total time 6 hrs and 385 km very good road except few km. Sinh sadan sasan gir is good guest house maintained by forest department. It is good plesant place. You have to get permit to vist forest 50 percent of total booking is done online and rest is done at this place. Very cooperative driver and guide will accomplish with us in open car. Enjoy your ride and different type of deers, bufflow, monkey, birds, trees and we sighted one lion for 15 minutes. Next day gir interpretation park is also a good place to visit as a second option. Shoping is also good experience at sinh sadan for jacket, caps and mug. On the way back you can visit Gondal palace and if you are intrested in heritage property it is good place to live and have look at palace, vintage car collection, person train bogy, garden, libarary and much more. over all it was good experince to move and spend time with nature.

First things first. If possible, plan much in advance (1.5 - 2 months) and get a safari permit online (www.girlion.in) for a slot of your choice (6am-9am; 9am-12noon; 3pm-6pm). One permit (for upto six people) costs you Rs 400 (for Indian Nationals). This will ensure that you will not waste time on the day of your visit waiting in long queues to get your permit. Once you have the permit, visit Sinh Sadan at SasnGir (thats the name of the village) 30 minutes before the safari time and from the online booking window get an allotment of guide and safari vehicle (a Maruti Gypsy). Upto six people can travel in one vehicle. As of November 2014, the Gypsy costs you Rs 1300 and the guide costs you Rs 250 for a 3 hour safari. If you book through Hotels they charge you Rs 3500 for the permit + gypsy + guide + pick-up-drop. Once you enter the forest, submit yourself to lady luck! But - patience generally pays. Be quiet and wait whenever instructed by the guide or driver of the gypsy. Nobody can guarantee you the sighting of lions. We were lucky to have "Darshan" of two lionesses who walked past just 2 feet away from our Gypsy - Grrrrrrrr!!

Additional tips: you might want to try eating Gujarati food @ one of the eating places just outside Sinh Sadan. We had breakfast and lunch - both delicious and very reasonably priced!
