I had a desire to see lions in their natural habitat in the national park at GIR. But because of monsoon the gates were closed. We had to satisfy ourselves seeing peacocks and deers. Of Course the forest was at its ornamental best because of good rainfall after three years of scarcity. The Park is well maintained and I will look forward for a second visit possibly with better luck.

Gir National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the well known places in Gujarat. After seeing the advt.on the TV by Mr. Amitabh Bhachan for Gujarat tourism we decided to add Gir to our itinerary.
The Gir wildlife sanctuary houses the Asiatic Lions besides other animals like, spotted deer,Barasingha,Blue Bulls,Jackals,Langrs and a lot of beautiful birds.
The best time to visit is between mid October to March.Tourists at other times are not permitted in the sanctuary.
The forest department has beautiful a/c and non a/c accommodation and one can book these online.
12 kilometers from Gir is Deviliya where the Gir Interpretation Zone .You get to see a lot of wildlife here too. There are small buses which take you around for an hour. The animals are not caged.
Not to miss the authentic Kathiawadi food available at the local dhabas. This place serves mouth watering Millet (bajra rotis) with home made butter, ghee, baingan ka bharta, and the yummy save tomato vegetable.
The visit to Gir was worth the effort.

Gir National Park
Place : Sasan Gir, Junagarh district, Gujarat
Famed as the only abode of Asiatic lions.
Tourists who ever visit Gir Park often love jeep safaris. A ride in wild jungle is such an adventurous idea for every visitor. But, for this ride, you must have permission from the Sinh Sadan Forest Lodge Office. This is such a wild attraction in Gir.

Safari charges, Rs 2500/- for Indians and Rs 4000/- for foreign nationals. This is up to 6 persons in a jeep. This includes, Jeep charges, Guide charges and Entrance in the park.

Timing are 6 to 9 AM, 9 to 12 Noon and 3 to 6 PM Camera/movie will be charged Rs 100/. The Jeep will pick up and drop at the Lodge.

Gir Park operates from mid Oct to mid Jun and is closed for Monsoon but hotels in Sasan remains open for bird watching as many birds migrate during monsoon.

We went in March 2013, though it was not the best time for spotting the king of the jungle, but we were quite determined. We had 3 Safaris all being at different timings, viz, 6:00, 9:30 and 15:00. We spotted a family of Asiatic Lions resting under the shade of a tree in our 2nd Safari at 9:30. Only few Safari guides are helpful, rest are total waste. Apart from lions, we spotted many other animals and birds too, like Wild Boar, Golden Jackal, Spotted Deer (Plenty of them around you), Nilgai, Grey Nightjar, Hanuman Langur, Plum Headed Parakeet, Chital, Crested Hawk Eagle, Blackbuck, Chinkara, Sambar, Mangoose, Mottled Wood Owl and few more. It was really amazing experience seeing and photographing them. Also, there are these African Tribes known as 'The Siddis' which are settled inside Gir Forest since centuries. It was fun with them too. I recommend people to go in April / May months for naturally increased chances of lion sightings. And dont forget your Camera with Good Zoom along with Binoculars!

We went in by noon. We were not aware of online booking. There was huge queue and we were denied tickets because we were not in the quota of the days ticket issue. Somebody from Bombay who were four and had room for two more in the jeep were kind enough to take us with hem and wow, it was worth the trouble. As usual we could see sambar, monkey and peacock. We could not see lions and disappointed. But on the way back were lucky to see a huge lion and lioness. UNBELIEVABLE. We could see them walking majestically very near our jeeps. It was great.
