“A synopsis of textiles in Gujarat, and more”
Review of Kutch Museum

Kutch Museum

The museum was generally very good anyway - we loved the guns outside. But the display of textiles produced in Gujarat was wide ranging and there were some very fine examples of weaving and needlework. We met a group of Americans who were travelling around Gujarat to see the textiles. They must have had a complete festival for the eyes in the museum. Don't go to Bhuj just to see the museum, but if you are there for a day or two, don't miss it.

Visited the Kutch museum and gained some great insights into the spread/evolution of the Indus valley civilization. There are some really nice ancient sculptures of Buddha, Jain monks and Hindu gods, some nice imagery about various local tribes and lifestyles and some beautiful handicraft from the region. The museum has an appearance of poor maintenance, however, do not let that detract you.

A very small museum diagonally opposite the Hamirsar Lake on the main road in Bhuj. 30-45 minutes is all it takes to take a tour in this one storeyed structure, but it beautifully explains the history of Kutch. The ground floor has mannequins of all the major communities of Kutch and these lifelike structures are amazingly well made.

The Harappan (Indus Valley) civilization relics on the ground floor are the best part of the museum. I could not believe I was actually touching articles of a bygone era dating back 7 millenia!! Superb and fascinating.

The first floor is dedicated to handicrafts and clothing...traditional fabrics, articles and craftmanship. Photography is allowed upon payment.

You can spend around half an hour in The Kutch Museum if you have the time. It has some information about the area, its people, etc.
