Its beautiful and startles you a bit, if you do not know what you are headed for. The much seen white that seems like sand on TV etc. is actually salt and you see it endlessly. You can walk into the salt pans feel the rawness of the place, there is salt in the air, in your lungs, under your feet, everywhere! It's a must do experience and makes for stunning photography

This is a unique ecosystem. The land is flat and seemingly devoid of life. It has a thick layer of salt and the soil is mostly clay, that does not absorb water.

The long monsoon season fills this vast area with water, which is saline due to the salt in the soil. This creates a small sea and some high lands become small islands.

This water evaporates only due to the desert sun. The water fully evaporates only by April.

This creates a heaven for migratory. Amazing variety of birds come here in the winter season (Oct to Feb). They come from as far as Siberia, central Asia and Europe. This is a dreamland for birdwatchers.

During the summer months, it is extremely hot and dusty, as you would expect in a desert. But because this is a vast flat salt land, some people come here to test the speed limit of their fancy vehicles.

This place is around 100 kms from Bhuj city. There are two good resorts just next to the White Rann. Must stay for one night here.

If you are traveller who likes splendour of nature, calm & serene surrounding, this is the place not to be missed. I visited in Jan 12, Experience was mesmerising. Vast landscape of salt white land merging in horizon with stark blue sky is just magical. Cool breeze & Shining sun it is unforgettable.
Make it a point t visit in winter & it will be lifetime experience. Combine visit to Desert with Stay in Shaam E Sarhad at Hodka village (15 Kms away) & visit to craftsmen villages of Hodka, Dhorodo are perfect package for wonderful holiday.

Just about 5 km from Dhordo, Gujarat, India, there is the spectacular White Desert situated in the Great Rann of Kutch. Dhordo is about 80 km from the nearest city/airport of Bhuj. The White Desert is a result of accumulated salt – during the rains it becomes a marshy area covered with salt water, but during winters as the water evaporates, the salt accumulates over the Great Rann of Kutch to turn into the spectacular White Desert.
To get the very best of this visual experience, you should be there on a full moon night – the entire area glitters with the reflection of moon light. But there is a catch – when I was planning to visit the place I was told that no one is allowed into the Great Rann without special permission from the Border Security Force (BSF). If you do not have the permission, you can see it from Kalo Dungar, a hilltop from where you can see the White Desert at a distance – this, of course, surely is not the best way to view the same. If you find it difficult to get permission from BSF, and yet want to visit this spectacle, then don’t lose heart – every year there is one month long Rann Utsav (the Rann Festival) starting somewhere mid-December. During the festival, you can go into the White Desert without any special permission. So just take out the almanac, get a date around the full moon, and be there for a visual treat.
While visiting the place, you can stay at Bhuj (there are many hotels available there), or you can add to the flavor by staying at Shaam-e-Sarhad Village Resort at Hodka Village, about 12 km before Dhordo, which provides you with a Kutch village experience in totality. If you visit during the Rann Utsav, you will find tents set up at Dhordo too for the tourists visiting the Festival. In either case, you will need to book in advance to avoid last minute disappointment.
