When I told the Local Taxi driver to take me to the Goa state Museum at Panaji, the capital city of Goa, he was not aware of the location and he took me there after taking direction from many people. I mention this because many are not aware of such an excellent museum, having great historic exhibits dating back from 15th century and the Portugal presence in India and even photographs of pre-historic stone age rock carvings of 8000 B.C-2500 B.C.. I felt disappointed and sad on seeing a handful of people visiting the Museum along with me even though the entry was free. Some body in the Goan Govt. seems to have taken great interest in upgrading the Museum in a new spacious building from 1996, The exhibits are being organised and displayed in a nice manner. Probably the Tourism dept. has not advertised properly about the Museum. Historical events connected with Portugal, pictures, artifacts, sculptures, religious arts of Christianity, gradual development Portuguese coins and currencies and to top it all a Historic huge Lottery machine made of wood which I have not seen any where in the world are displayed here. I have attached the Photo of this machine. There is a gallery on the environment and effects of ecological imbalance which will be ideal for all the school students of Goa to gain knowledge.

I have visited the State museum before and you really need best part of a day to do the Museum justice, everything from the portugesse rule right up until the time India re took Goa from the portugeese back in 1961 is here their is also a wonderful display of bank notes and currency that was used in Goa prior to the 1961 take over by India. Again i cannot rate this museum highly enough.

Most visitors to Goa are unaware of this remarkable State Museum. After visiting ASI Museum at Old Goa, tourists tend to skip the remaining bit of Goa's history.

Apart from the colonial Portuguese remains, the State Museum also displays various artifacts of indigenous culture of Goa before the arrival of the Portuguese. There's also an interesting section dedicated to the freedom struggle of Goa. A visit to this magnificent museum is recommended to the tourists who wish to know more about Goa beyond just beaches and churches!

Tourists are unaware about its location and this place often doesn't feature in most travelers' itineraries! It is located behind the Kadamba bus depot and beside the State Library.

I rate this museum as one of the better organised smaller holdings with some fascinating exhibits, with an eclectic range of collections from early historic sculpture to the Goan freedom struggle and from Christian religious art to contemporary art.
The Museum has also acquired several private collections including a personal collection of antiquities of an ex-Governor of the State.
On the ground floor are two exquisitely carved gajalakshmi panels which are easily the most ornate in any museum collection in India.
There are locker facilities near the reception.
The museum has a lot of interest even for children. I was gladdened to see a teacher take her flock of students through the galleries.

I love visiting Museums some how and i never knew Goa had one and We stumbled upon this place by accident, but were really glad we went there. It has a very good collection and record of a lot of very important historical artifacts of Goa. Entry is free, and you can finish the entire museum in about 2hrs

lovely experience.
