“Great city with Portuguese Heritage”
Reviewed October 5, 2012

I found the city wonderful, it has spacious roads, nice gardens, and I loved the architecture, finding similarities with the portuguese one of course. The churches are beautiful (I visited The San Francisco de Assis Church and The Bom Jesus Basilica), I was amazed by the altars (very opulent.. typical of the colonial times) and I wasn´t expecting to see the Casket of Saint Francis Xavier in the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa, it is the famous christian missionary who devoted much of his life to missions in Asia, after being appointed by King John III of Portugal. Being portuguese it was great to recognise some of the heritage. I only wish the historical sites were more well-maintained than I found them, most monuments I saw are continuously exposed to environmental conditions without any kind of restoration or protection. Overall, it was a great experience, I recommend everyone to visit this beautiful city.

“old, beautiful, mysterious”
Reviewed September 21, 2012

velha goa should take your breath away if you knew its history! a megapolis of yesteryears before london and new york gained eminence. the most cosmopolitan city in the 16 century for hundreds of years till a horrible plague took all of it away. it was the epicentre of a unique imperialistic culture before east india company was not even born.

if there was one place where plots were made to colonise indo china it was probably at a smoke filled cavern with buxom goan dames flaunting their stuff in velha goa, if there was a place where traders, merchants, actors, dancers, sailors, riff raffs, rags and kings rubbed shoulders with the missionaries, the mercenaries, the wide eyed rebellious youth dreaming of indian spices and emeralds, it was in the lanes of velha goa.

“The Capital of the erstwhile Goa”
Reviewed September 17, 2012

Old Goa was the capital of the Adil Shahs and prior to them the Kadambas and the Vijaynagari rulers used it as a port
When the Portuguese conquered it, they made it their capital until it was ravaged by a plague forcing them to move to the current capital Panjim which was then a small village
Old Goa during the Portuguese rule in the 16th century was a center of Christianisation in the East which can be noted by the concentration of the churches in the place.
A mere 10 kms from Panjim Old Goa forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites with its churches and monasteries
A wonderful tour which takes almost a whole day to visit but a visit worth the effort back into history
