The place is extremely well-kept. The service is really amazing (Jeanette and her son were always ready to help and the employees were all friendly). Our room was very comfortable and breakfast on the sunny rooftop was a truly relaxing experience!

Room Tip: Rooms upstairs are probably sunnier than the ground ones.

We stayed at Afonso Guest House for two nights this week and loved it. Jeanette and her son were incredibly accommodating, having a room ready for us when we arrived after a 10-hour bus ride at 7am (even though the last guests had just recently left). They gave us great advice on where to go next on our four-month trip, directing us to a less crowded, less touristy beach than where we'd planned. My fiancée was feeling sick and the lovely cook even made him special black tea with lime. The breakfasts were affordable and delicious, and we also had laundry done efficiently and cheaply. It was a completely relaxing respite, made even better by how green and lush it was.

We stayed for four nights in Feb 2014, and had a good time. This place is very near to the River and the Panaji market, with a lot of good restaurants nearby. Good for a late evening stroll by the River. The rooms are very clean with basic amenities. A/c,drinking water, toiletries etc are chargeable extra, but that hardly matters as the price and location more than make up for it. Lots of pretty plants around the house.
The hosts are very friendly and suggested a lot of nearby restaurants and great spots like the Reis Magos Fort that are easily overlooked by tourists.
Panaji is quite a distance from the main tourist locations and beaches, and may be a bit of a problem for people who want to be near the beach.
Ideal location for tourists who want to experience the Portuguese neighborhood.

Room Tip: Rooms in the higher floors are better.

I stayed at the gorgeous Alfonso Guest House in late Jan/early Feb 2014 for just over a week and loved every bit of my stay. The whole experience was excellent and made my holiday relaxing, enjoyable and absolutely worth it. This is a longish review so if you don’t have time for it, just know that the this hotel - and the lovely people who run it - are entirely worth the very reasonable rates. Rooms, beds, bathrooms, aircon, free wifi, location, breakfast, service and people were all excellent. If you have time to read a longer review though, read on! All in all, a five star experience. Thank you Jeanette, Clifton and Afonso Hotel for the experience! I will definitely be back (and probably most of my family and friends as well!).

**NOTE: all bookings must be made online, with no phone bookings. Go to the website http://afonsoguesthouse.com/ to book. I found all my emails with questions about rooms and the booking were answered very quickly.

--The Afonso people--
The owners Clifton and Jeanette and their staff were so wonderful - friendly, chatty, professional and accommodating. I hadn’t wanted to do the typical backpacker/beach party thing and they were so helpful with all my questions about where else to go in Goa and Panjim as well as what to do when I got there. Clifton and Jeanette gave great recommendations on all the standard tourist attractions as well as less well known places such as great market shopping, restaurants, beautiful art and historical/cultural attractions (temples, Old Goa, Fort Reis Margoa etc), perfect local beaches which are quiet and not inundated with tourist touts, good day trips to forest villages and hills. They gave good safety advice (a big plus as solo female traveller) and booked trustworthy and excellent taxi drivers for me as well as advice on which local buses to take to places and recommended prices to pay for things. They even gave me an impromptu lesson on bartering hard, the Indian style, so that I wouldn’t get as ripped off at the markets as I had been. The lesson was gratefully received!!! Clifton, Jeanette and their lovely staff even looked after me with much love and care when I unexpectedly got sick (NOT from this hotel. It was from food elsewhere), cancelling my booked site-seeing plans for me and checking in on me to see that I was alright. Amazing and very much appreciated care. Thank you so much!!

--The room, bathroom and beds--
The rooms at Afonso Guest House are gorgeous - quiet, comfortable, secure, decorated with style and immaculately cleaned every other day (possibly more or less if you ask). The free, reliable wifi is accessible in the rooms as well as common area which is great. My room had an excellent fan and air-conditioning, a large wardrobe and floorspace for my luggage and two large windows with picturesque grates over them so I could leave the windows open during the cooler nights (a rare blessing when travelling on your own as female!). The bed was two very comfortable two singles pushed together as a double but this was no problem for me as one person (and good if traveling with a friend). Other rooms had doubles or queen beds I think so just ask for one of those rooms if you prefer that. The mattresses were great - completely comfortable, soft but not too soft, just firm enough! I slept well. My private ensuite with toilet, shower and sink was well ventilated, roomy, spotless and had really reliable water pressure with hot and cold water.

--The common roof terrace and breakfast--
All the common areas (entrance hall, second level hall and roof terrace) are lovely and welcoming particularly the fantastic rooftop terrace where breakfast is served every morning. It has tables and chairs and catches the cool breezes. It’s full of bright flowers with a lovely view over the surrounding historic streets and rooftops. The hotel wifi is accessible up there which is a huge bonus if you want to check emails or plan travels in the mornings before your day starts or during a quiet day or night staying in.

Breakfast was not included in the room rates when I was there (or the room rate that I picked) but was available to all guests and consistently tasty, cheap, fresh and well cooked. The menu included toast, jams, Goan bread, cereals (museli, honey cornflakes etc), omelettes, fruit, tea, coffee, fruit juice and more were all available. It was served on the gorgeous roof terrace by serving staff who were friendly and lovely. I think tea and coffee or juice is available at other times too, perhaps lunch (although I'm not sure. Check). Certainly I was brought some bread, tea and juice during the day when I was sick, something of which I am truly grateful as I couldn't have gone out for food at all that day or night!! Such great service.

There entrance and stairwell have pretty artwork, windows with views and comfortable chairs for resting or waiting as well as books left by other travellers for future owners.

Families with kids seemed very welcome but I also never heard any noise from little kids or babies during the day or night so it was still a peaceful retreat for those without kids.

--The location--
The hotel itself is a gorgeously converted historic old Portuguese Goan house with all the modern room and bathroom fittings that you'd want. It's in the really beautiful, old Latin Quarter called Fontainhas which is very picturesque with excellent photo opportunities and a close 10 minutes walk to the main tourist attractions in town including the Immaculate Conception Church as well as the bus station for daytrips to Old Goa, the hills and the beaches. Fontainhas is safe and friendly to walk around and very peaceful at night. Just down the road from the hotel are several small grocery shops, fruit and vegetable stands, traders of all sorts (tailors, travel agents, book sellers, laundry shops) and a GREAT icecream shop. Do go there, it's great!

--All up--
I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a great base to see Panjim but also the rest of Goa, including the famed beaches north and south. I’d highly recommend it for women travelling on their own due to the safe location, the comfort of the hotel and care of the owners and staff. Families with kids seemed very welcome but I also never heard any noise from little kids or babies during the day or night so it was still a peaceful retreat for those without kids.

Lastly consider staying here so you can see more of Goa than just beaches and parties, from a really lovely hotel as a base. It’s an incredible old colonial town with a rich Indian culture and seems to be a side of Goa that is sorely overlooked in the ‘beach/party’ reputation. The amazing old temples, buildings and history are everywhere. Braganza Palace and Fontainhas and other gems are definitely not to be missed, especially for history and architecture buffs but also for anyone looking to see another side of Goan culture and life and meet some really lovely people as well. Thanks Clifton and Jeanette for everything.

Lovely old house, clean rooms, helpful hosts. We stayed for 2 nights, which was just the right amount if time to visit panjim. Located in a quaint neighborhood, this is an excellent option for those that appreciate cleanliness and friendliness.

Perfect location. Spacious and very clean room with a wonderful hot shower. Very friendly and helpful staff. Yummy breakfast on the calm rooftop. Perhaps a bit expensive for backpackers on a tight budget. But all in all a great guest house to spend a few nights. We really recommend this lovely place!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Afonso Guest House, run by Panaji's reputed Afonso family, is more than just a guest house to its many patrons. Nestled in the capital city's quaint Latin quarter of Fontainhas, it is a veritable bridge between Goa's Portuguese past and Indian present. A favoured haunt for many an adventurous traveller for over three decades, its hospitality and peppy spirit show no sign of aging and are still as fresh as they were back then. It makes no pretense of being luxurious; instead, Afonso Guest House prides itself in being simplistic and practical. With its friendly and welcoming hosts, it's truly your home away from home-clean and functional, the rooms are airy, and equipped with everything a traveler might need. However, the clincher is its lovely terrace graced with potted plants where traditional Goan breakfasts are served to guests every morning, overlooking the whitewashed St Sebastian Chapel. So, if you seek home in a foreign land, come over! Really! You won't regret it. ... more   less
