“Total bliss!”
Reviewed January 10, 2013

This year my fiancé and I decided to avoid the chaos that is christmas and head to the sun for a week of relaxation. A work colleague suggested the Caribbean island Roatan due to our shared passion for diving, and we were very lucky in our choice of resort. To be honest we picked Tranquilseas because of its prices but we were both very pleased with the level of service we received at the place. Combine this with reasonably priced food, friendly staff, and some fantastic diving trips in groups as little as 4 and 5 people and maybe you can start to understand why we feel like we hit the jackpot by selecting to stay at tranquil seas. We would definitely recommend this small but beautiful resort to anyone intending to visit Roatan.
(Ps. not a cruise ship in sight, they all dock at the south side of the island, total bliss).

I have just spent my second christmas on the Island of Roatan and can honestly say it is the perfect place to escape the winter blues...

I was greeted like an old friend by the staff at Tranquilseas and this is one of the main reasons why i chose to return to the island, Kris & Monica made me feel so at home the first time around. They have expanded the resort in the last two years but the general feel and energy of the place is pretty much the same as i remember, hot, quiet & very very tranquil.

Once again a big thanks to Monica & Kris for making Winter seem so very far away...

We will definetly be back AGAIN for some more Tranquility.

The best way i could describe tranquilseas is Tarzan with sand. The whole place seems to be crafted from wood and covered in layers of exotic jungle plants. All the cabins, sorry, cabanas in the complex are made from some form of wood, so are the walkways, the stairs, the restaurant, the bar, the roofs, the walls, the tables, the chairs, the sun loungers.... even the toilets... : )

The main social area consisted of a semi open air palm leaf roofed bar & eating area which directly overlooks the carribean and opens out onto a large sun terrace where i lost a few hours topping up my xmas tan (hey don't hate, its my little present to myself, a tan in December, always goes down well in my books!)

There's a small swimming pool on the lower floor which is mostly used by the scuba instructors and the trainee mermaids, i'm more of a snorkeller but my wife is a fully qualified bubble blower and believe me, whether you are into scuba or snorkelling Roatan has so many great and easily accessible dive sites to enjoy. One of the Tranquilseas staff named Monacka or Monika tipped me off on the 1st day about a great snorkel point located barely 20 metres from the beach in front of tranquilseas. This site looks like an old crumbled pier and is home to octopus, lobsters, morel eel, and tropical fish of all shapes & colors, and its right on the doorstep of the resort.

Convenient or what?

"mmm? Shall i snorkel before breakfast or shall I snorkel after breakfast?" He He He!

Tranquilseas has got a cozy little bar run by a bubbly local named Scott who seemed to have a smile for everyone. I tried 1 or 3 of his delicious tropical cocktails, if i remember correctly it was the "Monkey LaLa" or was it the banana flavoured ice drink that got the better of me on more than one occasion... (Ps If you get to read this, thanks for the interesting conversation as well Scott, good luck for 2013).

They served a scheduled breaky, lunch and dinner menu offering a variety of reasonably priced dishes. But as already pointed out by some of the previous posters in this thread (gotta love TripAdvisor) for a few dollars you can also jump in a taxi down to a local hot spot for travelling gringos and ex pats called the West End, which although bearing no bloody resemblance to London's Oxford St or Soho, this west end does contain lots of places to eat (some good and some avoidable) and a few bars with LOUD music, so if you fancy a noisy night out away from the Gekos and your hammock, try the west end.

The island seems to be a haven for canine dogs aswell as old sea dogs. The entrance to tranquilseas is along a wee dirt road with hut housing on each side and the neighbourhood dogs like to bark when any one walks past. It made us jump the first couple of nights but dont be scared by all the barking, the dogs are quite harmless, and will bark at any excuse, a great eco friendly security system ensuring that no one can get within 50m of the resort without the dogs sparking up a chorus.( if you bump into a dozy Rottweiler called Macey please please please give her a ice cube from me, what a lovely hound).

The electricity supply for the WHOLE island cut out 3 times during the week we were on the island and it stayed off for about 1-4 hours each time, so do yourself a favour and pack a torch and some batteries alongside that mosquito spray and suntan lotion...

Oh yeah, the name "Mosquito Coast" is truly & aptly earned. Between the mosquitos and the sand flies my arms and feet were devoured. I would advice anyone going to Roatan to look into vitamin B12 supplements that repel the little blood suckers and plenty of garlic in your diet leading up to your trip!

Overall we had a truly relaxing and recharging stay on Roatan which i personally attribute to a winning combination of the lazy seclusive nature of the tranquil seas resort and the genuinely nice helpful team who work there!

Happy New Year to Scott, Kent, Monacka,Chris, Feo and the anonymous kitchen staff,

Thanks for everything guys!

(Sorry about the size of the tip).

My wife and 2 daughters spent 3 days at Tranquil seas before moving to a more commercial resort at West Bay. We should have stayed at Tranquilseas. If you are a diver, it is much less crowded. You might go down on a dive with 4-6 people but so much better than the 20 people going down with you on the other side of the Island. Kent is the diving guide and he is very good, knowledgeable and easy going, like everyone else at TS.
Monica made us wonderful Paella but all of the food is very good and the hang out spots are excellent with beautiful views and quiet.

We just got back from 6 nights at Tranquilseas. Family of 4, scuba diving every day. Very relaxing place to stay...some of the highlights for us: The hangout spots on the deck are great. Diving is easy, and we liked all the divemasters and boat drivers. The reefs right in front of Tranquilseas are incredible. Breakfasts were good, food was good in general. The dinner choices are limited but it was fine for us. The staff are all friendly. We felt safe and generally just relaxed. From what we could tell, Roatan is either backpacker crash pads or over-the-top resorts. Tranquilseas has found a happy medium...Sorry to have to go home!

We visited Roatan from December 29th 2012 through January 5 2013. Our plan was to stay at a lively place on Sandy Bay for a few days to let the kids meet people and then move to Tranquil Seas for the balance of the trip. We pre-booked and paid for the rooms in advance. The day before our move to Tranquil Seas the owner contacted us to see what time we wanted to be picked up. On the morning we were supposed to move to Tranquil Seas, we were notified by our hotel that the owner of Tranquil Seas had extended our stay at our current hotel and that we would not be moving. A short time later the owner of TS showed up and said he could not accommodate us but would help us find another location. He refused to give us any reason except that one of our two rooms was not available. The island was packed so we had very few if any options. After ruining the day looking in vein, we told the owner of Tranquil Seas we would take the one room at his lodge and and leave our kids (college age) at the current hotel (great family trip). He said ok and told us he would come by in a half hour. When Chris showed up, instead of getting our bags he gave us our money back, offered us $50 dollars and a ride to another hotel if we could find one. I again asked him why this was happening and he simply refused to answer except to say the reason had nothing to do with us.. I then asked him about his prior offer to pay for our current rooms and he replied that he was going to use the money we already paid him to pay for the current rooms. In the end he gave us a few dollars more and walked away. We spent the next two days at our current hotel and then were had to move to another hotel since our hotel was booked solid. Our final hotel only had one room the first night with a queen sized bed and a couch. I slept in the hammock outside. Overall it was the worst family travel experience we have ever had, and it was handled in a totally unprofessional manner by the owner of Tranquil Seas. At the very least he owed us an answer as to what happened. If anyone reading this review was at Tranquil Seas during those days I would love to gain some insight. .

Thank you for taking the time to share your Roatan Experience with the tripadvisor network.

Firstly, I would like to explain to potential guests and readers that the TripAdvisor star rating system is not in any way connected to any of the international star rating systems used to grade hotels (there are a wide variety of rating schemes used by different organizations around the world. Many have a system involving stars, with a greater number of stars indicating greater luxury. (Forbes Travel Guide launched its star rating system in 1958. The AAA and their affiliated bodies use diamonds instead of stars to express hotel and restaurant ratings levels and I believe everybody has heard of the Michelin 3 star system awarded to high class restaurants). So please be careful when referring to the TripAdvisor star rating system to select a destination for your vacation. Make sure that your expectations can be met by the business you select, that your country of choice can meet your travel requirements and that the hotel you opt for has all the facilities you require in advance.

TripAdvisor reviews are posted by members of the public that have been to the hotel or restaurant described in their review, whereas the international 5 star rating systems that are awarded to hotels & restaurants are based on meticulous surveys that are requested & commissioned by the hotel or restaurant in question.

The Tranquilseas resort is an intimate 5 room Eco Lodge that is located on the island of Roatan, just off the north coast of Honduras. Please remember this is a 3rd world country where poverty and hardships are an everyday occurrence. When travellers or guests have an unpredicted, or unforeseen incident, there are limitations to what can be done to resolve it.

If you reserve a room (or cabana) that is designed and equipped to be shared by 2 people, (ie, a couple sharing a bespoke hand built wooden double bed that is crafted into the design of the room), do not be surprised if when you call the hotel 24 hours before your intended arrival and inform them of your reservation error, they decline your request to remove that integrated double bed and replace it with 2 single beds.

Be clear when describing the demographic of your travelling party, ie, a group of 4 people consisting of 2 x couples is dynamically different from a group of 4 people comprising of 2 parents with 2 teenage siblings (not many teenage boys want to share a bed with their teenage sister for a week).

Once again we are truly sorry for the overall experience you had on Roatan, and hope that in the future you would consider a discounted stay at Tranquilseas Eco Lodge & Dive center.

Regards,

My family, 3 college kids and their parents, spent a wonderful 6 nights at Tranquilseas learning to scuba dive. The Lodge was the perfect balance for us of nice but relaxed, small but with the amenties we wanted. The lodge and our cabana had a nice rustic island feel. It is hard to beat eating breakfast on an outdoor terrace overlooking the Carribean. The staff was extremely friendly and often hung out in the bar chatting with the guests after their shifts ended. The kids loved that the few times Scott, the bartender, was not around, they could help themselves to drinks and mark it down on our account sheet. The owners, Chris and Monica, were unbelievabley nice and helpful, giving us lots of lifts to town for dinner (even though the Lodge also serves dinner), and little presents like a gingerbread house made by a local merchant on the island. They threw a very fun Christmas celebration for the guests complete with gifts and games. The atmosphere encouraged a very nice comraderie among the guests -- it felt kind of like summer camp. The diving was fantastic. Kent, our instructor and the head of the dive center, worked really hard to get the whole family deep-water certified in just 5 days. He related beautifully to both kids and adults. Who knew that learning to dive and diving could be such a great family activity. It was one of our best family vacations ever. We are already trying to figure out when we can return to Roatan and Tranquilseas.
