“Great Stay at Sundancer Cabanas Roatan”
Reviewed March 31, 2009

Just spent 2 weeks at Sundancer Cabanas. These are 2 bedroom ( some with a loft for 3rd bedroom) units built using local woods and surrounded by lush flora and fauna. Remember the old adage: Location, Location, Location. Sundancer is IT. They are close enough to both West End and West Bay, but just far enough away on Cruise Ship days when you don't want to go to the West. There are 3 restaurants within walking distance, and the pool is very nice and secluded. The best part of the community is the 300 foot long pier with a great elevated deck at the end. Perfect for snorkleling out to the reef, morning coffee watching the sun come up, and coctails at night looking for the Green Flash. Skippy and Dave are both very considerate and knowledgeable, and will help you with any needs. Our unit did not have A/C, but we never missed it, and slept under the fans. We do recommend you ask for a cabana with a screened porch, as it will allow you to open up the unit to get the great breezes that blow through.
Yes, there are bugs, but only at sunup and sundown, and they never slowed us down. Bring a bottle of Cutters or Off, and go on your merry way. The cabanas are rustic, but clean and comfortable. This is NOT a 5-star resort, so don't expect it to be one. But for great prices, excellent location, and safe, secure accomodations, we don't think it can be beat. We'll be going back

I recently traveled to Roatan and stayed at one of the Cabanas at Sundancer and, overall, I was incredibly pleased with everything. Our Cabana was perfect for 2 couples:it had 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen, and living room. Our place was well decorated, clean, and fully furnished. I absolutely loved the location because we were away from all the large touristy crowds but close enough that we could get to those areas in less than 5 minutes taxi ride. The private dock was beautiful and we didn't find that there were very many mosquitoes; we were seldom bitten. Furthermore, the manager at Sundancer took good care of us by informing us about the island, picking us up at the airport, dropping us off, etc.. We all enjoyed our stay very much and recommend Sundancer Cabanas to anyone (unless you are wanting a commercialed all-inclusive experience).

"Serenity on Paradise Island" is found at Sundancer Cabanas in Sandy Bay, Roatan Island Honduras. We stayed in Sundancer Cabana 1B for an entire week and had nothing but fabulous experiences one after another! Our Cabana was beach front with an amazing dock out into the most exquisite view of the ocean (day or night). Unbelievable snorkeling right off the dock with the reef just minutes out and tropical fish you can't find anywhere else, all to yourself. Peace and serenity without the rush of tourism around you. Four unbelievable restaurants to choose from without ever having to get in a car. The Blue Parrot is right on sight with Bay Island Beach Resort only 30 minutes down the beach(walking) and 2 in between. Some of the best food I have ever had!! Our cabana was beautiful! Our screened in porch allowed us to enjoy early morning sunrise coffee with beach view and late night meals with the sound of the ocean rolling in as our background music. Absolutely Perfect!! We also took in a few island excursions: swim and snorkel with the Dolphins at Anthony's Resort ( just down the road from the Cabana) and Ziplining at Gumbalimba Park, both amazing! Sundancer Cabanas in Sandy Bay - an absolute must!

I've traveled a lot in the tropics and central America, and Roatan Island in general was a disappointment. It's not a tropical beach island, it's a rainforest jungle island. However, there are a few nice spots. Unfortunately Sundancer Villas wasn't one of them. If the island was a disappointment, Sundancer villas was a disaster. This might make a suitable fishing cabin that one would rent for no more than $300 a month. They are almost falling apart from neglect and they are filthy. I talked to other renters and they all felt the same. The place is alive with every imaginable blood sucking insect in the world, and the abundance of bugs has attracted thousands of bats. After dark they buzz around your head like dive bombers, and during the day they hang under the eves and the gables above the decks, dropping bat feces on everything and everyone that may be out on the deck below. Beside the bats, there's packs of dogs that roam the complex day and night, fighting and barking all day and night. Two people were bit while I was there. Besides the bats and the dogs, there's wild chickens that roam the complex day and night. The roosters crow with unbelievable volume, day and night. Between the bugs, the bats, the dogs and the roosters, unless one lathers themselves in bug repelent before bed and has an excellent set of ear plugs, forget about getting a decent nights sleep. This place is like a mad house. So if your planning a tropical vacation to go away and relax and enjoy the wonderful perks a tropical vacation has....GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!! This place sucks.

In search of a quiet resort, on a beautiful sandy beach where we could enjoy walks and swim in the warm caribbean waters while sharing our culinary talents in our condo where we could watch the ocean in serenity and sleep soundly in bright , clean surroundings we contacted Sundancer, a resort we had seen on one of the many travel sites we were checking to find such a vacation. However, the resort is not quiet. Construction in nextdoor houses (3 of them) continued 7/24 , no they did not take sunday off. The dogs , also at a next door residence (5 dogs) raced around, barked all day and night, and in one instance bit one of the sundancer guests. The roosters crow, but not ever at dawn, their dawn commences around 2:30 a.m. and continues until dawn at which time they seem to start their naps. The beach there is not real clean sand and unless you are covered in at least a 25% Deet product you will regret walking on the sand at all. The snorkeling was phenomenal after you got to the end of the dock and swam out a bit of a distance to the reef, for certain that would be a highlight. West End where the beaches are white powder sand, you cannot take anything to the beach when you visit there as the locals and others will steal anything and everything. We had been advised of this, though, ahead of our visit so this was not a surprise. Coxen Hole where you get your groceries, was a typical third world country town. They do have a littering fine so the actual sidewalks are clean, just not off the sidewalks. The Sundancer cabanas themselves, I would have to say, were filthy. I guess filthy has different meanings and standards in different peoples opinions, but we feel filthy is the appropriate word. We could not recommend that anyone stay there. During our stay there we met visitors in 4 of the other units, the rest of the units were empty except for fulltime residents, and all of the other 4 along with ourselves would never return. The pots and pans in some units (we stayed in two different units) are so rusty, and the silverware so rusty it would not be beneficial to our health to use them, the floors were dirty, and some of the mattresses urine stained. We feel it is important that no one else have to experience what we went through during this horrific nightmare of a "holiday".

If you are looking for a great getaway without the usual tourist hubbub....these are relatively basic units, right at the beach. We stayed in unit 4A (that we found at the beachshack.com), down by the water. There is an INCREDIBLE reef right off the beach, excellent for easy snorkeling, and a beautiful long dock that sits out in the ocean breeze. All units are different, some with A/C, although we never used ours. Some units seemed to be better stocked than others, but clean. Be prepared to be flexible. Many of the units are lived in full time or seasonally by their owners. The Blue Parrot restaurant at the opening to the complex is a good place to eat and drink, but access to the popular West End is cheap and very easy by taxi (flag down one at the entrance to the complex). Driving around Roatan would be exciting and rather stressful...and taxis can be cheap (discuss with the driver when you flag them down) or call Carlos from IslanderTours.com. He is a local that can help you with where to go and what to see. Very friendly, bilingual and professional. The resort is small, quiet and central to all the great stuff to do on a relaxing beach vacation, but not fancy or up scale. Its simple and very Beach...but does have a nice pool for the kids.
