“In a word: Fabulous”
Reviewed January 4, 2011

This was our third trip to Anthony's Key in three years, and we never repeated trips to a resort before, preferring to experience new places & faces. This place is so special, though, that we were completely sold mid-way through our first visit. The dive operation is wonderful, the staff is exceptional. We felt like "family" from the first day of our first trip. What can you say about a place where the staff recognizes you and greets you by name on the first day of your second trip, a year later?

We have brought our children (teenagers 13-17) and our parents (non-divers). All have had a wonderful time at Anthony's Key.

There are bugs. They bite. Bring GOOD bug spray. Pay the extra money for a Superior room, and stay on the Key. It's well worth the money. Take a taxi up to the Plaza Mar for snacks & refreshments in your room and enjoy those evenings on your deck overlooking the ocean. Forget about television (except in the bar). Relax and enjoy your time away!

If the word "Resort" conjures thoughts of marble-tiled hotel entries with Greek columns overlooking the beach in Hawaii, then go to Hawaii. This place is rustic and homey by comparison. Which is one of the reasons we love it. Coupled with the staff and the dive operation, this place is top-notch!

To Mandy, Jimmy, Joel, Kirvin, and the rest of the Anthony's Key Resort staff, thanks for the wonderful vacations...we look forward to many more years with you!

We dove with AKR off of a Carnival cruise. We did the checkout dive before we had our interaction with the dolphins, lasting about a 1/2 hour. Once we boarded the boat for our open water dive with the dolphins we were notified, and notified the divemaster, of an air leak in my young sons gear. The divemaster didn't change out the tank at all, even though it was over half empty. Watch their gear (we had 2 o rings bad) , watch the divemasters so they do their job and overall watch their safety. I do not think she was certified as a divemaster as she did not check our experience levels at all!

My husband and I traveled to AKR in March. This was our first dive trip and we completed our open water certification dives during the first 2 days there. I love being in the water, and I loved diving. My goal was to spend as much time in the water as possible, and that we did. We logged 17 dives during the week and when we couldn't dive any more, we snorkeled off the key.

The resort: The resort sits on a hillside close to the west end of the island. The main building and restaurant are both open air building and are up several steps on the hillside. Some cabins are also on the hillside tucked into the canaopy, the remaining cabins are on a very small key just off the shore. We stayed in a key superior room. It was very spacious and well air conditioned for good sleeping. It sat over the water on stilts, so it was fun to see what was swimming around under our porch each day. To get to the key, you need to take the AKR "water taxi" about 300 yds across the channel. There's no charge or tipping, and it runs 24 hours a day. We rarely waited more than a minute and we thought it was actually quite fun.

The food: The food was pretty good. We are not foodies, so we didn't have high expectations either. There was generally 2 choices for dinner, and there was never a meal that we didn't like. The fresh seafood (typically snapper) was always delicious. Alcoholic drinks aren't included in the all-inclusive, but that wasn't a problem. We were typically so tired from diving each day that we didn't really stay up late to party, we just had a couple at night and headed off to bed. This is not a party resort, most of the people there were there to dive and the resort goes very quiet by 10pm.

The Diving: Our dive instructor, Bisch, was awesome. He was fun and thoroughly enjoyed his job. He also made sure that we completed our certification dives as early as possible so we could enjoy all the dives the rest of the week. We completed 3 of the dives on day 1 and finished our certification bright and early the next morning. Even during our certification dives, we always had time after the skill work to explore the reefs. The diving was amazing, and we saw a huge variety of marine life. We also opted to dive with the dolphins, which was an experience I will never forget and well worth the money. The dive staff is not there to police your skills, so know your abilities and your limits. We did a night dive off the shore on one night with a vacationing dive instructor who took us out. It was a fun little dive.

Lovely setting. Lush tropical island.
I got stomach bacteria however. Since we had the all inclusive package, it could have only come from one place. I only ate at the dining room.
I heard one other woman got "turista" who stayed there too while I was there.
I am still on serious antibiotics 3 weeks after I returned. :-(
Just sayin'
Avoid the shrimp?

My husband and I traveled to Anthony's Key Resort in Roatan and absolutely LOVED it!!!
The service from the staff was fabulous! So friendly and helpful! We enjoyed the snorkel package and were shown amazing things by Corvin & Ross "the boss"! Two super informative and friendly guys!
From the waiters to the taxi boat drivers to the dolphin trainers, everyone was great!
We loved the day trip to Maya Key, another beautiful spot on the island! Bailey's Key was so natural and lush, we loved looking out from our hammock over to it!
Would highly recommend the Key Superior room. Lots of room, great views, cozy hammocks!
Being able to have a dolphin encounter was amazing, definitely something off our bucket list!
Housekeeping was satisfactory - they made the bed and emptied garbage, but did little over and above. Honestly tho, you'll spend so little time in your room that it doesn't matter!!
Be sure to apply your sunscreen as that sun is HOT!!! Even at 8:30 in the morning!! :) Gorgeous!

Nothing bad to say!! The staff met our every need. The meal choices should make anyone happy. The rooms are what are expected by real divers and we had no problems. The boats are the best i have dove in. As an AI ,John our DM met the needs of every diver on the boat of all skill levels.
AKR meets the needs of any diver!!!

Greetings Dive Travelers. Although some are overly critical of their stay at A K R, I can only assure you I found so few things to really complain about. A year ago September, my wife took off for AKR with 5 gal pals. She came back with zero complaints (lifetime 800+ dives, 18+ livaboards, and two visits to AKR), compaired to my paltry 50 something dives.. One must do their research before going to curb the enormous appetite of expectations. "Well Oiled Machine", is an overall way too describe this all inclusive adventure.

To begin with, the service begins the moment you touch the ground at Aeropuerto Roatan. Yes, the greeters and luggage staff are all business, but very efficient. As for tipping right off the bat, no one ever 'hit us up' the entire time we were there. But if you come to an all inclusive resort without a budget for tipping, you would need to review why you take issue with it. As a rule, we do not care for 'suck up service', but far more appreciate, safety, professionalism, integrity and service. First and foremost, this is a divers' destination to be sure. Snorkle hounds and dolphin encounter aficionados second. The resort welcomes all levels of

Anthony's Key whisks you off in a timely manner from the airport in a mine bus and your checked baggage heads off in a separate truck. Keep in mind, this is a fairly large island compared to its sister islands, but vehicles are on the smaller side.

A welcome drink and briefing (room assignments, general information) , are all done with efficient manner and a smile. If you are lucky to arrive before 1pm, there is a good chance you are invited to lunch.

Although some of the cabins are on the 'main side', the real action for accommodations are a short (2-3 minute) 24/7 water taxi ride to the 'Key', or 'island', where you will find the lovely pool, kayak fleet (included), picnic grounds, coconut palms and lovely cabins of varying rates. Most have AC and over the water balconies. One gets used to the scene very quickly and is immediately entranced and comforted by the surroundings. In anticipation or our reservation, we began to call our vacation, Dive Camp, or Adult Summer Camp for diving.

The order of the day is acclimation to the dive staff. Lucky for us, my wife had been there previously and immediately recognized her favorite boat captain, Rupert and asked to be signed on to his boat. Unfortunately, Calderon (excellent), the dive master was working on another dive boat. Our Dive Master John looked like a younger version of Harry Belafonte and had lots of experience and a good sense of humor! You are offered a locker each for your gear and lucky for us, our boat was stationed right in front of the entrance to the locker hut. The lockers are tall and just big enough to hold all of the gear you need to stow on a nightly basis.

To be continued.
