“Great!”
Reviewed June 18, 2013

It was quiet, relaxing, with a beautiful view of the ocean, direct access to beach. John and Barbara (the managers) were amazing! It was conveniently located to food, dive sites, snorkeling right off the beach, the dolphin reserve, and shopping.
Our stay at Mayoka Lodge was better than we expected. Mayoka is not a typical hotel but is more like an upscale bed and breakfast. The five detached rooms are well maintained and clean and the small hotel feels like you've rented the beach house for your personal use. We were greeted with excellent margaritas and a full tour of the hotel while our bags were put in our room, and soon after we met the managers of the hotel who are great people. Every morning, one of the managers would come by and ask us what our plans were. If there was anything we wanted to do, the hotel staff took care of arranging transportation or guides for us. They even gave us a local cell phone to use in case of emergencies or to arrange transportation elsewhere. If there wasn't anything we had planned for the day, someone always had a suggestion on a great snorkeling place, or a friend who was going out here or there - we were even invited to come along with the hotel managers as they went to a place on the beach to meet up with some of their friends. They always had great suggestions for lunch or dinner if we didn't want to eat at the hotel. Breakfasts had coffee, freshly squeezed juice, fresh fruit, and a hot meal. One breakfast we had the pleasure of watching dolphins jumping right out by the pier! Dinner at the hotel was wonderful (it was like we had our own private cook for the night).Pros: It was quiet, relaxing, with a beautiful view of the ocean, direct access to beach. John and Barbara (the managers) were amazing!
Cons: The water pressure in the shower and sink were pretty low, but keep in mind you are on a small island off the Honduran coast.
Location: Conveniently located to food, dive sites, snorkeling right off the beach, the dolphin reserve, and shopping.

Hi Angie!

it was a pleasure to have you and Jason at the Mayoka!
Still trying to figure out the pressure up...but as you said this is an Island and it is not always easy.
We always love to share our "secret hideaways" with our guests and glad you enjoyed Beachers.
Hope you guy can organize you next trip here with your friends.
Keep in touch

My husband and I spent one night at the Mayoka lodge in March 2013 while we were in Roatan for a wedding. The Mayoka significantly exceeded our expectations. I wished that we had spent our entire Roatan trip there. I loved relaxing next to the infinity pool which had a lovely view of the beach.

Things we liked at the Mayoka:
- spacious, luxurious room with comfortable beds and high quality linens
- very clean
- great facilities including a tranquil pool area, game/tv lounge, beach access, and complimentary ocean kayaks to use (so much fun to kayak near the reef outside and see all the ocean life!)
- quiet atmosphere with little noise
- delicious breakfast served poolside each morning
- friendly, helpful staff
- overnight security guard

Things that we would have changed:
- more expensive hotel option on Roatan
- door lock on our room was complicated to use and hard to open/lock

Overall, we loved the Mayoka lodge and would stay there again on a future trip to Roatan.

One night was too short! Thank you for your kind words and yes those door locks can be a pain and we use a lot of WD 40 but that's life living on a Caribbean island on the water! Come back and see us soon!

So happy my husband and I found this lovely little jungle hideaway! Hidden in lush landscape but only moments from the airport you arrive at Mayoka on Roatan's north shore in Sandy Bay which is more secluded than the touristy west end, but only a few minutes from the action. The place itself is beautifully rustic and warm and the caretakers Barbara and John are just great. The rooms are lovely and clean and with the breeze from the windows and the fans, the available a/c was not needed at all! The included breakfast is a great way to start the day! A cup of coffee and fresh fruit and breads amidst palms and greenery, birds and lizards and the trickle of the infinity pool. perfection. Also, they add so many little touches to the stay that are amazing. A local cell phone to use to call the lodge or a taxi while you go exploring. Filtered drinking water in the room (tucked in a stylish cupboard of course). Sea kayaks and snorkeling gear. There is also much downstairs for entertainment like a pool table and tv area, but rarely used and hopefully part of it soon to be converted to more rooms as there are only five currently.
John and Barbara are there for you to recommend places to go, things to do or just to chat over a glass of wine. Lovely romantic candle lit dinners are there if you desire as well as restaurants next door which are both amazing. We got to have a special treat on our visit as they hosted an impromptu party with owners and other guests featuring island cuisine from mainland chef and live music from a local friend.
My husband and I travel very frequently and we try to find places a little "off the beaten path" and the intimacy of Mayoka and the island of Roatan fulfilled our wishes. The beauty of the island is breathtaking and Mayoka keeps the luxury simple and in a lovely balance with the surrounding landscape. We will have to return!

John and Barbara Morris, the managers of Mayoka, never rest on their laurels at this magical place. I arrived at Mayoka in early May with three other people, and we were immediately greeted like family by the Morrises. Their warmth is not some canned affectation learned at hotel skill...it is totally genuine. They want you to love their place, and make you feel totally at home. Beverages are on the honor system that you can get any time in the lovely kitchen. Breakfasts, which are included, are delicious...starting out with fresh mango, pineapple, etc. at your convenience. You can sit, eat, read at any number of tables overlooking what has to be one of the most addictive views I've ever seen. Downstairs in the villa are a home movie theater, billiard room, and British style pub bar....rarely used. Upstairs, you look out over an inviting infinity pool, and a stretch of palm trees to their own beach. Just a little further out, a short swim away, is the second largest barrier reef in the world...still healthy and inviting you to explore several times if you like to snorkel. There are also free kayaks, and a tennis court out front. If you just want to kick back, it's hard to imagine a better spot than the already mentioned infinity pool. John and Barbara love Roatan, and know it well. They shared what they do on Sundays at West Bay Beach with our group. Need a cab? John will find you the cheapest and most reliable. Want to go on an excursion? The Morrise know the hits and misses. Just want to talk? They're up for it any time they have time. Want world class dinners? While we were there, Daniel Doc O'Connor, a renowned businessman and chef from mainland Honduras, came in to train staff. The guests were the lucky guinea pigs. Obviously, that won't happen every week, and some things will change at Mayoka over the years. As long as John and Barbara are there, Mayoka will retain its high standards as a uniquely wonderful haven.

The whole experience was amazing for myself and my new wife. Greeted and treated like old friends in their home, Barbara and John, ensured our honeymoon was unforgettable. The recommendations for dive operator, island tour guide and dinner selections from their private chef were spot on and excellent in every way. The setup of the lodge is the perfect combination of privacy and common space. Whether you are a group of eight or a traveling couple, the rooms, house, pool, property and included access to kayaks and snorkeling gear make it an effortlessly amazing stay. Waking every morning to fresh fruit smoothies and right-out-of-the-kitchen breakfast is second only to the view of Sandy Bay from your seat. Speaking of, Sandy Bay is the best location: literally a five minute cab (easy to grab on the road) from West End (shopping, dining, water taxis, nightlife) but without the constant presence of tourist traffic of West End. Sandy Bay has a couple of dining/drinking options if you stay close but has easy access to much more.

Room Tip: All are fantastic but asking for the ocean views never hurts.

Mayoka Lodge, a great place to kick-back, enjoy the endless ocean views, sunsets, beautiful gardens, luscious drinks, fabulous meals, and friendly staff. We just spent a wonderful week snorkeling both inside and outside the reef right in front of Mayoka Lodge. The kayaks a welcome aid in getting from shore to and over the reef, and we found having them tied to our wrist useful as they stayed close and acted as a warning for powerboaters. The fish and coral were outstanding and numerous. Every time into the water was a new experience.

In addition to the great snorkeling, we found Mayoka Lodge to be a nice quiet adult oriented resort. The breakfasts included with our room were enough to keep us going until dinner and the dinners, prepared by CIA trained chef Crystelle, were outstanding.

Poolside lounging was made extra special by Leandra's yummy cool drinks and sunny personality. She even had Enguel pick fresh coconuts to make us a special pina colada!

Our room was spacious, clean, and the bed very comfortable. We slept every night with the windows wide open, listening to the ocean waves break on the reef and the wind in the palms.

We could have spent the whole week without leaving the lodge, but, we did make a few ventures to see other sights of the island. John and Barbara recommended and arranged for us to visit the Blue Harbor Tropical Arboretum, take a private guided tour of the whole island with Tina, and visit West Bay beach. All of these activities were absolutely wonderful. Being able to rely on John and Barbara's knowledge, experience, and contacts really gave us a special experience we wouldn't have gotten otherwise. They are the key to Mayoka Lodge being such a wonderful vacation destination.

Thank you Jim! It was a pleasure to have you and Pat at the lodge. The pictures, videos and reef maps you left with us continue to be a delight and a help with our guests. It is now part of the check in routine for them to watch and understand what a beautiful snorkel experience we have right in front of the Lodge. Thank you again and come back and see us soon!

We actually ended up at Mayoka Lodge by accident. For some bizarre reason, we hadn’t spotted it when looking online for somewhere to stay in Roatan. Instead we had intended to stay at TranquilSeas but there was a date mix-up and so Chris Benson, owner of TranquilSeas helpfully suggested we give John & Barbara a call to see if they could accommodate us. Thankfully they could. Whilst TranquilSeas is a dive operation without rival and the bar is a great place for lunch and Tuesday evening tapas (see separate reviews), we couldn’t help but continually thank our lucky stars that we got our dates wrong - Mayoka Lodge is a far smarter and more personal accommodation option.
Sandy Bay is lower key and not as touristy as West Bay, a little further down the coast. If you are after loud music, lots of people and hermit crab racing (!) go to West Bay. Sandy Bay is clean and quiet and there is abundant coral just off the end of the docks – quite wonderful for snorkelling - but it’s not the sort of beach where you would spend all day on a sunbed with a cocktail glass in your hand. It’s a beach for walking down and paddling and admiring the view of the endless blue water before heading back to the sundeck at Mayoka for serious snoozing and sunbathing. For evening entertainment, Tuesday tunes & tapas at Tranquilseas is as good as it gets, although taxis to West Bay are relatively cheap and easy to find.
Mayoka Lodge is a beautiful property. I’m not sure the TripAdvisor photo of the front of the building does it justice – I remember worrying that it looked dark and imposing. This isn’t the case, at all, I think, just a function of angle of the photo and the shade from the trees that line the drive as the house is set well back from the road.
Inside, it’s evident that this was originally a home. The modern stairwell leads you into a bright and spacious double height reception space, with the open plan kitchen and honesty pool bar to your right, a ‘formal’ dining room with table for 12 to your left and the deck and infinity pool in front of you.
The deck and pool area are quite small, but fabulous. The large window back into the kitchen acts as the pool bar, with pretty much anything you could need just a couple of steps away.
The views over the ocean are simply breathtaking. You’d struggle to do any serious swimming in the pool but it’s wonderful for cooling dips. And if you really have the urge to swim 2km before breakfast (can’t say we ever did), the calm sea is just a few steps away at the end of the garden.
Another of the fears that I had with such a tiny hotel is that you would lack facilities. Again, I couldn’t have been more wrong here. Mayoka Lodge has the only tennis court on the island and Barbara arranged a local tennis coach when I couldn’t persuade my other half to play. There is no formal ‘spa’ but Barbara arranged (getting a theme here?) for a physio/masseuse to come in daily and we had evening massages out on the deck with the birds singing and the gentle ocean breeze overhead. Kayaks and lifevests are waiting for you at the end of the garden for you to explore the seashore. The excellent dive centre at TranquilSeas is approximately 20 steps out of the garden gate and along the beach. We had every facility we could have asked for.
I should mention that the basement of the house also had a den with slouchy seats, an enormous TV screen with DVDs and box-sets aplenty, a small library, giant card table, a pool table and subterranean bar. We didn’t use them at all as the weather was fabulous and we spent all of our days outside. But they are there and would be certainly be a welcome distraction if the weather wasn’t kind.
Five of the six rooms are outside the main house, built as separate ensuite wooden villas. Again, it’s clear that the property was designed as a home – rooms are spacious and the finish is high quality. All the windows and doors had integrated robust mosquito screens so you could sleep with all the windows open to hear the sea without worrying you were going to be bitten to death. Both fan and AC were offered. Small touches, like plenty of plug points for all our chargers, a chilled water cooler set into the wall and copious wooden hangers that you can actually move from the rail was indicative of Barbara’s attention to detail and determination to make this feel like home (albeit a very glamorous and well-appointed home)
Two of the villas are right on the edge of the deck overlooking the sea. We loved raising the blinds in the morning, opening the French doors and looking out over the ocean whilst Elvin busied about setting our table on the deck for breakfast. If you want a little more privacy from the comings and goings on the deck, ask for one of the other rooms which are set back a little – you don’t get the direct ocean view but your terrace and room are much more secluded.
As a small hotel, you get to know the staff really quickly. Without exception, the team at Mayoka were friendly and went the extra mile to do anything they could for you. Elvin as a waiter/ barman/ barista was just great, Angel kept the grounds immaculate and Maria and her cleaning team were quick, thorough and totally unobtrusive.
The food deserves special mention (see separate review). There’s no actual menu for breakfast – but even with one health & bikini-conscious traveller (me) and one full-fried-breakfast-devotee (him) we both cleared our plates every day – Crystalle – Cordon Bleu trained in New York - cooked a varied menu, always served with fresh fruit and freshly squeezed fruit juice, alongside endless amounts of hot Honduran coffee (for him) and herbal teas (for me).
Dinner was a similarly menu-less affair, sourced daily. Crystalle would ask us in the morning if there was anything we particularly wanted to eat. We are quite picky, but we were never disappointed. Portion size was just right, two courses just enough. We never asked for dessert, although I’m sure if puddings are your thing, Crystalle would deliver.
We were tempted once by the reputation of Vintage Pearl at West Bay, but compared to Crystalle’s dinners, it was poor quality, over-hyped and over-priced. We do also recommend Elvin’s small roadside restaurant at the end of the drive and that was delightful for honest, home-cooked Roatan dishes (see separate review).
The food, the location, the comfort and the staff at Mayoka are all wonderful. But what makes it outstanding is the attention that you receive from John & Barbara as hosts who turn it from a boutique lodge into somewhere that feels like home and who generally cannot do enough for you. We cut our stay short at our second hotel on Roatan to return to Mayoka. We got back six weeks ago now and whilst the tan and the relaxed karma are long gone, the memories we took from a place where we arrived as guests and left as friends burns strong.
We’d like to mention something we didn’t like, if only so our review looks a little more balanced to you, trying to decipher from thousands of TripAdvisor reviews whether a property is right for you. But we really can’t think of anything. The water in the shower in our room is a tiny bit salty as it comes from the property’s borehole. Some shampoos don’t lather so well. There we go, that really is the best we could do for a fault. We found it a haven of peace and relaxation and we were very, very sad to leave.

Dear unforgettable guests and now friends,

you are so right about the pictures which need a major clean up!
We can't wait to have the new ones updated with all improvements and new look of the Mayoka Lodge!
Since your stay, and upon your precious suggestion, we are now finally listed as a Hotel in TripAdvisor and, thanks to all our guests reviews, we jumped immediately on the first page of the research for hotels on Roatan and we are now number one as Luxury hotel on Roatan!

What you both really need to see now is the upcoming massage deck, privately nestled among the palm trees, with and amazing view of the ocean.

We really miss you and that is all we say about your review

Thanks
