Mayoka Lodge, a great place to kick-back, enjoy the endless ocean views, sunsets, beautiful gardens, luscious drinks, fabulous meals, and friendly staff. We just spent a wonderful week snorkeling both inside and outside the reef right in front of Mayoka Lodge. The kayaks a welcome aid in getting from shore to and over the reef, and we found having them tied to our wrist useful as they stayed close and acted as a warning for powerboaters. The fish and coral were outstanding and numerous. Every time into the water was a new experience.

In addition to the great snorkeling, we found Mayoka Lodge to be a nice quiet adult oriented resort. The breakfasts included with our room were enough to keep us going until dinner and the dinners, prepared by CIA trained chef Crystelle, were outstanding.

Poolside lounging was made extra special by Leandra's yummy cool drinks and sunny personality. She even had Enguel pick fresh coconuts to make us a special pina colada!

Our room was spacious, clean, and the bed very comfortable. We slept every night with the windows wide open, listening to the ocean waves break on the reef and the wind in the palms.

We could have spent the whole week without leaving the lodge, but, we did make a few ventures to see other sights of the island. John and Barbara recommended and arranged for us to visit the Blue Harbor Tropical Arboretum, take a private guided tour of the whole island with Tina, and visit West Bay beach. All of these activities were absolutely wonderful. Being able to rely on John and Barbara's knowledge, experience, and contacts really gave us a special experience we wouldn't have gotten otherwise. They are the key to Mayoka Lodge being such a wonderful vacation destination.

Thank you Jim! It was a pleasure to have you and Pat at the lodge. The pictures, videos and reef maps you left with us continue to be a delight and a help with our guests. It is now part of the check in routine for them to watch and understand what a beautiful snorkel experience we have right in front of the Lodge. Thank you again and come back and see us soon!

We actually ended up at Mayoka Lodge by accident. For some bizarre reason, we hadn’t spotted it when looking online for somewhere to stay in Roatan. Instead we had intended to stay at TranquilSeas but there was a date mix-up and so Chris Benson, owner of TranquilSeas helpfully suggested we give John & Barbara a call to see if they could accommodate us. Thankfully they could. Whilst TranquilSeas is a dive operation without rival and the bar is a great place for lunch and Tuesday evening tapas (see separate reviews), we couldn’t help but continually thank our lucky stars that we got our dates wrong - Mayoka Lodge is a far smarter and more personal accommodation option.
Sandy Bay is lower key and not as touristy as West Bay, a little further down the coast. If you are after loud music, lots of people and hermit crab racing (!) go to West Bay. Sandy Bay is clean and quiet and there is abundant coral just off the end of the docks – quite wonderful for snorkelling - but it’s not the sort of beach where you would spend all day on a sunbed with a cocktail glass in your hand. It’s a beach for walking down and paddling and admiring the view of the endless blue water before heading back to the sundeck at Mayoka for serious snoozing and sunbathing. For evening entertainment, Tuesday tunes & tapas at Tranquilseas is as good as it gets, although taxis to West Bay are relatively cheap and easy to find.
Mayoka Lodge is a beautiful property. I’m not sure the TripAdvisor photo of the front of the building does it justice – I remember worrying that it looked dark and imposing. This isn’t the case, at all, I think, just a function of angle of the photo and the shade from the trees that line the drive as the house is set well back from the road.
Inside, it’s evident that this was originally a home. The modern stairwell leads you into a bright and spacious double height reception space, with the open plan kitchen and honesty pool bar to your right, a ‘formal’ dining room with table for 12 to your left and the deck and infinity pool in front of you.
The deck and pool area are quite small, but fabulous. The large window back into the kitchen acts as the pool bar, with pretty much anything you could need just a couple of steps away.
The views over the ocean are simply breathtaking. You’d struggle to do any serious swimming in the pool but it’s wonderful for cooling dips. And if you really have the urge to swim 2km before breakfast (can’t say we ever did), the calm sea is just a few steps away at the end of the garden.
Another of the fears that I had with such a tiny hotel is that you would lack facilities. Again, I couldn’t have been more wrong here. Mayoka Lodge has the only tennis court on the island and Barbara arranged a local tennis coach when I couldn’t persuade my other half to play. There is no formal ‘spa’ but Barbara arranged (getting a theme here?) for a physio/masseuse to come in daily and we had evening massages out on the deck with the birds singing and the gentle ocean breeze overhead. Kayaks and lifevests are waiting for you at the end of the garden for you to explore the seashore. The excellent dive centre at TranquilSeas is approximately 20 steps out of the garden gate and along the beach. We had every facility we could have asked for.
I should mention that the basement of the house also had a den with slouchy seats, an enormous TV screen with DVDs and box-sets aplenty, a small library, giant card table, a pool table and subterranean bar. We didn’t use them at all as the weather was fabulous and we spent all of our days outside. But they are there and would be certainly be a welcome distraction if the weather wasn’t kind.
Five of the six rooms are outside the main house, built as separate ensuite wooden villas. Again, it’s clear that the property was designed as a home – rooms are spacious and the finish is high quality. All the windows and doors had integrated robust mosquito screens so you could sleep with all the windows open to hear the sea without worrying you were going to be bitten to death. Both fan and AC were offered. Small touches, like plenty of plug points for all our chargers, a chilled water cooler set into the wall and copious wooden hangers that you can actually move from the rail was indicative of Barbara’s attention to detail and determination to make this feel like home (albeit a very glamorous and well-appointed home)
Two of the villas are right on the edge of the deck overlooking the sea. We loved raising the blinds in the morning, opening the French doors and looking out over the ocean whilst Elvin busied about setting our table on the deck for breakfast. If you want a little more privacy from the comings and goings on the deck, ask for one of the other rooms which are set back a little – you don’t get the direct ocean view but your terrace and room are much more secluded.
As a small hotel, you get to know the staff really quickly. Without exception, the team at Mayoka were friendly and went the extra mile to do anything they could for you. Elvin as a waiter/ barman/ barista was just great, Angel kept the grounds immaculate and Maria and her cleaning team were quick, thorough and totally unobtrusive.
The food deserves special mention (see separate review). There’s no actual menu for breakfast – but even with one health & bikini-conscious traveller (me) and one full-fried-breakfast-devotee (him) we both cleared our plates every day – Crystalle – Cordon Bleu trained in New York - cooked a varied menu, always served with fresh fruit and freshly squeezed fruit juice, alongside endless amounts of hot Honduran coffee (for him) and herbal teas (for me).
Dinner was a similarly menu-less affair, sourced daily. Crystalle would ask us in the morning if there was anything we particularly wanted to eat. We are quite picky, but we were never disappointed. Portion size was just right, two courses just enough. We never asked for dessert, although I’m sure if puddings are your thing, Crystalle would deliver.
We were tempted once by the reputation of Vintage Pearl at West Bay, but compared to Crystalle’s dinners, it was poor quality, over-hyped and over-priced. We do also recommend Elvin’s small roadside restaurant at the end of the drive and that was delightful for honest, home-cooked Roatan dishes (see separate review).
The food, the location, the comfort and the staff at Mayoka are all wonderful. But what makes it outstanding is the attention that you receive from John & Barbara as hosts who turn it from a boutique lodge into somewhere that feels like home and who generally cannot do enough for you. We cut our stay short at our second hotel on Roatan to return to Mayoka. We got back six weeks ago now and whilst the tan and the relaxed karma are long gone, the memories we took from a place where we arrived as guests and left as friends burns strong.
We’d like to mention something we didn’t like, if only so our review looks a little more balanced to you, trying to decipher from thousands of TripAdvisor reviews whether a property is right for you. But we really can’t think of anything. The water in the shower in our room is a tiny bit salty as it comes from the property’s borehole. Some shampoos don’t lather so well. There we go, that really is the best we could do for a fault. We found it a haven of peace and relaxation and we were very, very sad to leave.

Dear unforgettable guests and now friends,

you are so right about the pictures which need a major clean up!
We can't wait to have the new ones updated with all improvements and new look of the Mayoka Lodge!
Since your stay, and upon your precious suggestion, we are now finally listed as a Hotel in TripAdvisor and, thanks to all our guests reviews, we jumped immediately on the first page of the research for hotels on Roatan and we are now number one as Luxury hotel on Roatan!

What you both really need to see now is the upcoming massage deck, privately nestled among the palm trees, with and amazing view of the ocean.

We really miss you and that is all we say about your review

Thanks
John and Barbara

My boyfriend and I stayed at Mayoka Lodge for 8 nights and all of our expectations were surpassed. The house is airy, beautifully designed and exceptionally appointed. The grounds and pool area are verdant and picturesque, especially the view of the ocean through the tree tops, over the edge of the infinity pool. Whether you stay in one of the private cabins or the suite (we were fortunate to try both), the rooms are tranquil and tastefully done. The best part of our stay was the proprietors, John & Barbara, who took the experience from lovely to fantastic. Their personalized attention to our stay was unparalleled and made us feel like we were staying with friends; that is if our friends owned a luxury home in a tropical paradise and only materialized to see that we were content at all times. Every recommendation they made for us was spot on and nothing was missed in the logistics of our getting around the island- when we ever wanted to leave! The chef is amazing and it is a treat to be able to order a restaurant quality gourmet meal and have a dinner by candlelight right on the patio. I would highly recommend Mayoka Lodge. Not only would we stay there again, it is the only place we will ever stay in Roatan.

Room Tip: The Cycad cabin is very quiet...

Thank you Emily for this beautiful review!
The only thing that we can say is: when are you guys coming back?!!

Thank you again for the beach cover up that you left as a present, which I have been wearing every day..

It was really fantastic to get to know you both and now that you became an experience diver, you have no excuse to wait too long for your return.

The treetop sunset deck is finished and the other night we had our firsts guests enjoying a lovely private dinner at the light of a beautiful full moon and our newly installed tiki torches!
Also we just got two additional wireless speakers which amazingly work on the sunset deck, playing your favorite radio station!

John and Barbara took us in during Semena Santa when we arrived a day earlier than planned and our condo wasn't available yet. We were put in a small but beautiful room overlooking the ocean. It was tight with the three of us but was only for one night. We were made to feel very welcome especially by the young lady at the bar/breakfast. She could not have been kinder. After a hardy breakfast of pancakes, sausage, fruit and banana milkshake, husband and son went diving and I enjoyed the new sun deck. Stunning view! Mayoka allowed us to store our luggage until we could move early afternoon. Only issue we had was dining tables right outside our window (beautiful view) stayed way past restaurant's closing time and kept us awake. The lodge is intimate and gorgeously decorated, immaculate and comfortable.

Thank you so much for your review.
We were so happy to be able to accommodate you at the last minute, during Easter week!
So we had to squeeze the three of you into our last available room that normally accommodate maximum two people.

We apologize for the late dinner guests, but as always, it get difficult for people to leave Mayoka Lodge!
The table has been since re positioned to our brand new sunset deck, for the private candle light dining.

We hope you can visit us again and finally have more time to try the gourmet dinners at our Frangipani restaurant

We stayed one night and had a great experience. The setting is awesome, the rooms are nice, and the staff and proprietors are extremely friendly. I would most definitely stay here again.
They serve a very nice breakfast daily and have a beautiful view of the ocean and a nice quiet beach. The beach on the other side of the island is what I consider to be over crowded

Room Tip: If you are traveling with kids the rooms might be small

Thanks for taking the time to review us even if you could stay only one night.
We are so glad that we could accommodate your last minute booking during Easter Week and make an exception for your family on our normal policy of maximum capacity of two people per room and 11.00am check out.
Even though we appreciate your tip about the room been small, if travelling if kids, we do not want to confuse the future guests, because the minimum age for staying at Mayoka is normally 18 years and above, to maintain an adult environment, for the privacy and tranquility of all our guests.

Should you come back and spend more time with us at Mayoka, don't miss the fabulous dining with our Chef Crystelle!

There is not enough space to talk about all the wonderful aspects of this place. No negatives, five-star quality all around. John and Barbara are so charming and welcoming. We felt as if we were visiting friends that we hadn't seen in several years in their private Caribbean villa. Always attentive, informative and happy to chat, they also have the grace and professionalism to recognize when you just want to sit by yourself and read a book. My wife and I stayed for a week in the romantic Royal suite (the only room in the main lodge, on the second floor) with a king canopy bed, from which you look through a wall-sized picture window high over the crystalline infinity pool to the reef and ocean beyond. The double soaking tub was perfect for relaxing and warming up after scuba-diving. Steps to the beach, the reef is a short, 1/4 mile swim through placid water, but you can kayak half-way and tie up to a buoy. Crystal-clear, shallow, very healthy reef, perfect for photos. Gorgeous sunset views from the pier on the beach and also from the new, tree-top deck they were installing while we were there. We were so impressed with Crystelle's cuisine (she's Cordon Bleu-trained) that we ate in most nights and just told her to surprise us. Even breakfast was fresh and new (lime-zest in pancakes? Oh, yes!). We invited newly-made, next-door friends to dinner our last evening and felt as if we were giving a small catered dinner in our own home. Elvin, the prep chef and general factotum, and his wife Gabby were ever-helpful and friendly (try the island food at their own restaurant out at the road!). John's recommendation for Tranquilseas next door for scuba was spot-on (see my review on their site). And even on the rare cloudy day, we had our pick downstairs of the large reading library, DVD collection in the home theater and shooting a few games of pool. John and Barbara, thanks so much for making our much needed R&R week exceed all our expectations. We hope to come back soon.

Room Tip: The Royal suite is the ultimate romantic choice. Other rooms are not quite as grand, but looked very...

At Mayoka Lodge, what really makes the magic work, is the blessing of having so many wonderful guests such as yourselves.
We have been extremely fortunate to be surrounded by visitors you arrived as guests and left and friends.
In the end, this is what the Mayoka Lodge experience is all about!...

When you come back, our Chef Crystelle has more surprises for you and you HAVE TO SEE the recently completed sunset deck, which is now our guests favorite spot to relax and enjoy the dolphins in the morning and the spectacular Roatan sunsets ..still looking for the green flash!

Thank you so much for the pictures that you posted on TripAdvisor... we LOVE guests photos!

My son and I stayed at the Lodge for 4 nights while in Roatan our annual father/son diving trip. On paper, the Mayoka Lodge is a beautiful boutique hotel with wonderful rooms and terrific amenities. However, the property is much more than that,......There are many resorts that are well appointed with great facilites. However, what makes the Mayoka Lodge so special are its managers---John and Barbara. They are the perfect hosts....attending to all of your needs. They have created a family atmosphere that allows for you to interact with your fellow guests and feel at home in the lodge. The Lodge's chef Cristelle (sp?) is terrific; you should have her cook you at least one meal while you are there. All and all, I can't say enough good things about our experience at the Lodge. This is the best place to stay at Roatan and it is because John and Barbara create such a welcoming environment.

Seeing our guests so relaxed and comfortable here, simply warms our hearts.
We finally named the Restaurant and the sunset deck is almost done.
Last night we had our fist sunset from the spectacular tree top view and it was quite special.
Today we started the building of the private massage deck, nestled in the palm trees, just off the main ocean front deck.
Will post some pictures as soon as it is finished.
Looking forward to your next visit, hoping to meet also your wife!
