We stayed at the Pez de Oro just for two nights last August. The reviews on this site are mixed, so we weren't sure what to expect (the more recent ones are more positive, interestingly). We liked our little cabin, painted in bright blues and yellows, with private bathroom. It had a much-needed fan, but it was more comfotable (heat-wise) to sit outside on our little verandah. There was a mosquito net over the bed, but we both felt trapped and claustrophobic, so sprayed ourselves liberally with mosquito deterrent and slept like that. We were fine. We ate at the restaurant, which we considered to be good but not exceptional. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we had no problems with them. They were very laid-back, as was the whole atmosphere. At the time we were there, there was only one other group staying, so we had the place to ourselves. We loved the pool and considered this to be the best bit. We knew it was clean because we watched them clean it. The shower in the bathroom is described as a cold-water shower, but because it was so hot, the water was hardly cold - just luke-warm, which was quite nice in that temperature. There was a terrific thunder-storm while we were there, which was interesting to watch from the restaurant overlooking the beach, but we woke in the night to find the electricity had gone off, so the fan was't working. I should just mention that the bed was comfortable with good pillows and the whole place was kept very clean.

All in all, we felt we had made a good choice. Usually with heat like that, we prefer an air-conditioned hotel, but in Monterrico it seemed that to get the air-conditioning you had to stay in a rather more grand hotel like a resort, and we prefer a more homey type of place. We liked being right by the beach, and we liked the lay-out of the cabins - it all looked very attractive. We would recommend it, but you do need to be aware that it's pleasant and relaxing, but it's a no-frills hotel.

Wonderful place where to spend precious relaxing time !.
In january 2012 i spent with my family (included our two nine and twelve years old boys) some days in this excellent "island of quietness".
If you are searching for a place where to relax eating fresh and superb italian food, well, you found it !
And right 10 meters far from the pacific ocean.
Great deal !!!!!!

I recently stayed at el Pez de Oro with my family over our summer vacation, and I must say we loved it. It has all the wonderful charm one would expect of a beach hotel. Every bungalow is painted in a unique colorful way, and both pools are just wonderful to relax in. Apart from the unbelievable service, the food was to die for. REAL authentic italian cuisine. We were just amazed and did not expect to find such a wonderful hotel in Monte rico. I highly recommend it. Thank you Pez de Oro for allowing us to have a magnificent stay, we will be back.

My family of 6 people (4 adults and 2 children) stayed here the fourth week of July. We booked a bungalo for my wife and I, and one for our son and his family. Both rooms had two queen-size beds, and a private bath with shower. Rooms were clean, spacious and well appointed with a ceiling fan and mosquito nets above each bed. The front porch on each bungalo had a hammock and a lounge chair. The water in the shower is not heated, and is salt water supply. Rooms are cleaned daily. We brought extra pillows with us, and glad we did so as the hotel does not provide extras.
The grounds are absolutely beautiful with lush palm and coconut trees throughout. There are two large salt water swimming pools which are kept sparkling clean by the staff. The pools are surrounded by ample lounge chairs and palapas for shade. On the beach front there are also palapas with lounge chairs. The bungalos are spaced throughout this setting and connected by concrete and stone walkways. Outdoor showers abound for washing the salt water and black sand from your bodies.
The food provided by the on-site restaurant is exceptional for the area. It is Italian cooking with a local flair. The menu is varied with breakfast, lunch, and dinner fares. The bar provides a variety of mixed drinks, beers, and Italian wines. The only thing we disliked about the restaurant is that they do not allow you to bring your own bottle. It seems a "corking fee" would be more suitable. Our waiters were always friendly and professional.
Pez de Oro is a little more expensive than most of the hotels in Monte Rico, but well worth it considering the amenities and setting. We would definitely consider returning

Room Tip: Request a bungalo on the upper terrace. One in particular is second level room with ocean view.

Hotel Pez de Oro is one of Monterico’s many small beach fronted hotels with spacious thatched roof bungalows interspersed between coconut palms and two small pools.
Each bungalow has it’s own bathroom with cold shower and white towels. And is strung with a hammock, linen curtains and mosquito nets, and although basic are pleasantly presented and very good value for money.

The setting at Pez de Oro is the nicest of Montericos mid range accommodation, and I would definitely recommend a stay for this reason alone. However the biggest let down is the restaurant, which serves poorly executed Italian food and the staff, who need rousing from their conversations in the kitchen before rather begrudgingly providing any service. On one occasion we had to set the tables and chairs out so we could sit for breakfast at 9am and after a 30 min wait without acknowledgement we decided to head elsewhere. One the other hand when breakfast is served, the coffee is good and the o.j freshly squeezed, which deserved a tick.

We tended to seek other dining options within walking distance around Monterico, where service is a cut above and food is more thoughtfully prepared. A sound option for eating is the small Swiss run hotel down the other end of the beach and several cheap comedors on Calle Principal. All in all Pez de Oro is worthy of a stay given the relaxed and pretty surroundings and reasonably priced bungalows.

I went to great lengths in selecting the right hotel in Monterrico for my 4 night break away from spanish school. From looking at guide books, reviews and speaking to people there seemed to be a fault with all the hotels along the beach. However i decided Pez de Oro ticked the majority of the boxes and thought i would give it a go.
I negotiated a price of 300Q a night (weekdays) for a double room nearest the beach. I might add this was with the Italian owner who is only there on weekends. I spoke to her on my arrival which was a Sunday.
The room i was impressed with. The sheets were clean and towels were nicely presented and the situation of going to sleep hearing the pacific waves roll in was magical. Faults with the room would be the fan not being positioned over the bed as it does get hot and also it would have been effective if there were mosquito nets over the windows. However there was a large mosquito net to sleep under and they kindly left a mosquito burner. All in all i was pleased with the room.
The food in the restaurant was very hit and miss. I did have the fish which was fresh and very good and they happily cooked a fish i caught . Another night i had the seafood salad at 90Q. This was almost inedible! It was a variety of fish straight from the freezer. Nothing worse than a seafood salad with no salad and those processed frozen crab sticks!! The breakfasts were ok with decent coffee.
The service is very average with emphasise on the lady who i presumed to be the manager when the owner is away. She lacks natural manners, friendliness and does the hotel no favours. I sense when the owner is away during the week the staff turn very carefree and sloppy with exception to a young lad who waiters the tables occasionally. I might add there is a tour guide who works through the hotel. He is a super nice chap who is incredibly informative.
Would i go back? I think one will have issues with all the hotels along the beach. But for 300Q a night, given the location i was happy with the room and the peacefulness. However i would eat else where other than the breakfasts which were fine. This way i would not be interacting with the unfriendly staff too much or risking the possibilities of an inedible meal. Good luck.

Room Tip: nearest the beach on the right looking out.
