A friend and I visited Monterrico last week, a place few sane travelers visit in May due to the BRUTAL heat of the Guatemalan Pacific Coast this time of year. We stayed at another hotel that didn't have air conditioning or ceiling fans, and escaped to the restaurant at Cafe Del Sol, like desert travelers seeking an oasis. The open-air restaurant overlooks the ocean and is situated to catch the cool breezes. The owner, Flor de Maria, is a charming and enthusiastic hostess, and made us feel very welcome. My fresh fish was the best I have tasted in years, and beautifully presented on a bed of local vegetables. The pasta my friend ordered was light and delicious. Although we didn't stay at the hotel, we got a peek at the rooms in the main building and they seemed cheerful and clean. We were impressed to learn that the owners are planning to build a school for local teens to train them for jobs in the hospitality industry. I don't think we would return to Monterrico in May again, but if we ever did go back at another time, we would certainly revisit Cafe Del Sol.

While not a fancy hotel this is truly the cleanest, nicest hotel in Monterrico. The staff is superb. Location is great. Each room has a fan and mosquito net. Very casual place. Good menu and drinks. Would definitely stay here again!!!
