“Best choice in Montericco”
Reviewed December 7, 2009

Cleanest hotel with the largest pool in town. Not on the beach, but a mere two minute walk away. Better than being on the beach as it is easier to keep clean. Far enough away from Johnny's the party place.

Best to visit midweek as weekends attract drunken crowds to the area.

We stayed at Atelie del Mar during a very quite time in Monterrico - although for me the weather was much more pleasant this time of year and the mosquitos didn't seem any worse than in April. There were possibly 5 rooms rented on the weekend, but Monday and Tuesday we were the only guests which probably affected the service. The room was nice and clean. Nothing fancy and a little dark, but the A/C was much appreciated! We had breakfast in the hotel the first morning and it was not not great. I was a little put off by barefoot, shirtless, smoking proprietor with very shaky hands as waiter. With Cafe del Sol's beach front restaurant just a skip away, that was the only meal we took at the hotel and it seems that we might have rubbed them the wrong way. It was nice and festive that they play LOUD music around the pool, although there were some very long sets of trance and 50's music that just didn't do it for me there in Guatemala. To me the location is fine, beach is very close and the pool is nice. It is a good value and when on a budget I would go back. September is not a good month though as it is totally dead. We were hoping to go dancing, but nothing happening, and hard to find dining options in the evening as almost everything was closed.

For relaxing vacation, Monterrico works perfectly. This hotel is cozy, clean, and has amazing personnel. Restaurant is really good. Location is very good in Monterrico, but generally in Monterrico there's not that much to see. Definitely worth it, prices are really reasonable.

I stayed here for two nights in April paying $110 per night for two adults and two children. This is the most expensive time of year in Guatemala so all hotels are a rip off. The pool is huge and well-maintained and the owners are very pleasant and accommodating. The included breakfast was reasonable and the other meals we had were fair. The main downside is that the hotel is not located on the beach, whereas others are. Also the rooms are really not up to even a reasonable standard - leaking sink, badly fitting door, dodgy AC, and very basic. To be honest very hard to recommend this place, which is a shame, but it is the truth.

We stayed with Stig and Violetta for 5 nights while on our honeymoon. When we arrived they seemed surprised that we were staying so long, as most visitors only stay a couple of nights in Montericco. But the time just flew by, lazing by their fantastic and much needed pool, enjoying their outstanding and never ending hospitality and watching the sun setting over the Pacific ocean each evening, stretched out on the volcanic black sand. It is the best place to really kick back and escape the rest of the world. We ate at the hotel each day which we don't normally do. But each night another fabulous dish was served which we enjoyed along with lots of great conversation. If you are looking to get away from everything but to also enjoy some great company, this is the place to stay.

I spent one night in Atelie del Mar in February 2009 and I am glad to say that it was a very good experience.

When I phoned to book a room the owner was very polite, friendly and helful when I asked him what was the best route to get to the hotel. When I arrived, the owner was very welcoming and he showed me two rooms and took the time to explain me how the air conditioning worked. The room was quite big and the bathroom very clean and well decorated. You can see that the hotel is very well maintained. Water was not very hot, but it was so hot outside that it did not bother me.

They have two swimming pools, a small one where kids can have a lot of fun and a very big one where I enjoyed swimming. Swimming in the sea is not very safe due to the currents so it is very nice to be able to enjoy a big swimming pool in hot Monterrico.

I think Atelie del Mar offers great value for money and a friendly environment very close to the sea (you just need to cross the road to get to the beach). The only improvement I could recommend would be to offer TVs in some of the rooms for those who are interested.

Although I travelled on my own, I think it is a real paradise for families as there was a family with 3 young kids who were having a lot of fun when I was there.

If you stay in Monterrico, Atelie del Mar is the place to be. Also enjoy the Mangrove tour organised by the Tortugario. It is a great experience!

Hotel Atelie del Mar is an incredible value and hidden gem in Monterrico. Unlike Pacific towns of more established tourist destinations like Costa Rica, Monterrico is still very small and up and coming in the tourist scene - that's why I like it. There's only a small handful of travelers that make the trek there and more local Guatemalans go there to vacation. No, there's not much to do in Monterrico other than relax and enjoy the natural surroundings which is precisely why it's so important to stay somewhere relaxing, clean, and friendly.

Hotel Atelie del Mar was all of this. They were adding on some additional single rooms while we were there. The owner is friendly and knowledgable and frank about the surroundings; his wife and co-owner is equally friendly. The pool truly is the best in the area - very clean and refreshing. I saw them clean it every single morning. The food is good but not cheap. It's decent priced but I like to try the local fare too. Internet wasn't working but you know what, you don't go to Monterrico to use Internet. The bedrooms were comfortable - the town is hot and humid by day but the rooms stay very cool at night. All of the staff were great too - one of the staff leads an early morning tour of the mangroves and though he doesn't speak much English, he's very patient when he speaks and he leads an excellent tour.

All in all, a great value and we had a very enjoyable time.

  • Liked — Cleanliness and refreshing pool
  • Disliked — Food was a tad on the high side
