My wife and I took one of the Coffe Cabanas for 2 nights, and although very small found it adequate. Would have been nice if the front of the cabana which was the open side wasn't facing the other cabana! Utopia is located, I think around 10km down a very bumpy dirt road from Lanquin, and also within walking distance from Semuc Champey - perfect location. The food we shared both nights was great, and we give compliments to John's mum, the chef. The owner, John and the rest of the staff were great.

My wife and I have lived in Guatemala for over a year and we've come not to expect too much in the way of hotels here. I really didn't have high hopes for any place in Semuc Champey and was extremely pleased with the Utopia Eco Hotel. The owner John is very accomodating and the private cabin by the river was very nice. I thought the food was tasty and fairly priced. I would recommend this place to anyone.

Room Tip: We liked the private cabin by the river

A beautiful building, in a beautiful place with great hospitality and a great attitude. The vegie only food was nice (I admit I was sceptical at first), and the open air bunkroom is a lot more comfortable than it sounds. Something different, in a very good way.

After a pretty interesting ride to get there we couldn't have wished for a better place to stay. As soon as we walked in we felt like we were old friends. Everyone, from the staff to the hotel's bubbly dogs, made us feel very welcome. We stayed in one of the nooks by the main dorm and were very happy with what we got. A cosy room with a crazy view over the stunning hillscape. When we (reluctantly!) decided it was time to leave the guys couldn't have been more helpful - calling our next place to sort a room out for us and arranging travel too.
I can't recommend this place enough! This is such a beautiful place and definitely a highlight of our trip.

We booked a double room in the upstairs dorm at Utopia. Utopia had only been in business for 5 or so months at the time we visited and like us, we found most people were there by word of mouth. From the wonderful communal eating/bar/lounge area you can overlook the beautiful river and surrounding mountains. Our room was rustic but charming and the beds incredibly comfortable. Candles light the way at night after the generator is turned off making for an amazing atmosphere under the starts by the sound of the river. Bathrooms are fine, with some nice artistic touches. Showers are cold, which is actually kind of refreshing after a hot day.
The hostel is beautifully located a (wonderful) 3 kilometer walk from Semuc Champey. The location gives you a real look into local village life. Locals are genuinely curious about visitors, please be respectful.
Meals can be ordered for lunch. But breakfasts and dinners are served 'you get what you deserve' which is delicious vegetarian fare. Dinners are a great way to meet other travelers and take in the surroundings. There's a handful of really beautifully natured dogs around to keep you company. Staff can help you with anything you need arranged and they personally picked us up from Lanquin and drove us back into town to catch the bus to Tikal. Please make sure you co-ordinate your arrival with staff. They will be there to meet you. Trust me it's worth it.

This place is wonderful and definitely impressive that they've only been in business 5 months.

Although definitely remote, the location is perfect. It is so close to the river and walking around in the hills nearby provides beautiful views. Just hanging out on the deck there is a great way to spend an afternoon. Waking up and listening to the river and birds is paradise.

The staff is very friendly and the place is very clean. The open air dorm where we slept had very comfortable beds. It was chilly at night but they provide warm blankets in addition to the standard sheet. They have electricity but limited light fixtures so at night the place is lit by candles which is pretty neat. No hot water but its not freezing and feels refreshing on a hot afternoon.

They serve all vegetarian food and family style meals. Dinner is definitely the meal they do best. So incredibly delicious. Their dessert, which is included in dinner, is really great. Lunch and dinner are less well done, but still impressive if you consider how remote they are and how hard it is to get things out there. Family style meals create good community amongst guests.

So peaceful and quiet. I would highly recommend staying here!

My wife and I stayed at Utopia for 3 nights in January and had an amazing time! We found them through TA as the party hostels in Lonely Planet sounded just awful. As soon as we arrived and saw the river front private cabins we immediately extended our stay. It really is one of the most beautiful and well designed places we've stayed in.

The staff and owners at Utopia are incredible and everyone goes the extra mile to be helpful and make you welcome. We went tubing down the river with Remy on the first day and it was amazing. Just a few of us floating down that turquoise river, no gangs of tourists here, it's super chill. We took the tour to Semuc Champey on the 2nd day with a guide from Utopia (Verjilio) and it was outstanding. There was only me, my wife and the guide and he was awesome. The caves are a great experience and it's definitely advisable to take a guide to Semuc Champey to show you all the cool places to dive from and all that.

The hotel is still a work in progress so there's a few kinks to work out. Mainly the food. I know they are trying to attract people to stay for longer but to do that they may have to improve the menu. All dinners are served family style and it's a lovely setting and a great environment but the food can be hit and miss. I don't mind exclusively vegetarian food for 3 days (ok, i ate a massive steak as soon as I arrived in Antigua) but the food is pretty basic and due to the location it's the only game in town for food. I'm sure this will improve once the place is completed.

Utopia was a major highlight during my trip to Guatemala and you'll have an amazing experience here. Thanks to John, Pam and Remy.

Room Tip: The riverfront cabins are stunning.
