We really enjoyed our time in the caves. Had a great guide from Utopia eco hotel. He showed us lots of things we would have missed had we gone on our own. So a guide is highly recommended.

Entering the cave is alway with a gukde. Prepare youd headlamp and do not depend on the provide candle that may get extinguished. Smaller groups are preferred. Some walking on slippery surface, some swimming, some climbing on a ladder under falling water.

Caving in Guatemala was quite the experience, something you ave to do. Only having candles as your light you swim, paddle, climb ropes and rocks through the cave following trusting tour guides. Jump off ledges and slide down rocks. Seriously awesome experience

this was a lot of fun (if quite cold), exploring the caves by candle light, but i got the sense it could turn ugly easily- safety didnt seem too high on the priority list and i would recommend being physically confident and able to swim because you end up climbing up a short but gushing waterfall (think- face full of water, keep your mouth closed!) and swimming through caves holding your candle above the water.

Ok, so wading through caves, treading water with a candle in your hand is pretty cool. Add to that climbing up a waterfall and jumping in and out of cave pools and you have the Lanquin Cave tours just outside the Semuc Champey park.
This is something that I would never have done knowing what I know now after going in the cave, but am super glad I did it. If you are in poor physical shape, this may not be the adventure for you as this is a pretty dangerous activity. Some may disagree with the danger level, but anytime you are climbing on pvc pipe held together with duct tape through a waterfall with no rope, harness, or helmet and the nearest hospital is 30 miles away and oh... did I mention you were in a CAVE... if you were to fall and hit your head on a rock... you are in a heap of trouble! So, be adventurous... try it out if you are that type of person, you will never forget it. If this sounds like it is too much for you... it probably is!
