great place to visit. Also walk around the Fish Market just outside the castle, walk over the bridge to the other side and experience the vibrant life in Elmina.

“A necessary educational stop.”
Reviewed July 25, 2013

I have visited many times. I believe this is an important historical place for all to see. The problem is it looks like they are having trouble properly maintaining it. In addition, I suspect the tour guides are not being paid well so at the end of what is an emotional experience for many, the tour guides are trying to suggest how you are supposed to tip them. Solution: have a sign up front that says that tips are appreciated. No need to create a tacky situation for all involved.

“First hand look at the slave trade”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

It has a grim story but a lesson we all need to remeber. Ignore the boys trying to sell you stuff whilst entering the castle area.

“LARGEST SLAVE DUNGEON IN WEST AFRICA”
Reviewed July 20, 2013

Many people think the Goree Island is the largest Slave dungeon in West Africa. Elmina Castle is the oldest and largest in Ghana, West Africa. Along the West and East Coast of Ghana, there are a line up of Forts and Castles. Elmina Castle is one of the venues that has been used for the celebration of Pan American Historic Theatre festival (PANAFEST). Guides here are very knowledgeable. Ask of Mr. Arhin or Philip Amoah Mensah.
