If you're visiting Macedonia, and you're looking for a place where you can get more then just the average hotel room, try this hotel. The entrance is majestic, the rooms are classic and spacy. It has it's downsides; sometimes the hot water might take a few seconds; the breakfast might be a bit average; sometimes the peacocks might make some noise. But in general, what a lovely place to stay! The church in the central courtyard is a national shrine for the Macedonians, and it's visitors will give you a wonderfull look into the religious life of Macedonia. And when it's evening, what a place to enjoy the beauty of Lake Ohrid. When you stay here, you will understand why Saint Naum wanted to start a monastery right here!

I liked very much the fried fish and the home made macedonian traditional salad from roasted aubergine, fantastic. the monastery gives fantastic view on the Ohrid lake. The beach is sandy and very beautiful. I suggest that you take a boat and go on sightseeing the inner space of the St. Naum springs. That is an unforgettable adventure and experience with the nature.

I would like to give Sveti Naum a recommendation for four main reasons:
1. The view,
2. The peacocks,
3. The best coffee we had in Macedonia was here, and
4. the souvenir stall owner who gave be a free bauble and made my day that much more lovely.

A bit of a drive outside the city itself, but worth the visit even if you are not interested in the monastery for any religious reason. Monasteries in Macedonia tend to be perched in wonderful spots on mountains and are worth the trip just to see the surroundings. Sveti Naum has a spectacular and remarkably peaceful view of the lake. The old church of St. Naum itself is tiny, the walls inside (where, unfortunately, you are not allowed to take pictures) covered over every inch in faded paintings of the saints and other decorations which are still remarkably colourful.

The original church was built in 900 and St. Naum laid to rest there in 910. That original church, however, was destroyed and the one you will be visiting was built in stages during the 16th and 17th century. The faded frescoes were in fact painted in 1806. However, the church retains a medieval feel and it is the original, remarkable site, so if that is the experience you are after, then go on.

The complex is not quite so peaceful or quaint, despite the flowing waters of Black Drim River which, taking it's source from natural springs in the Galicica National Park, fills the Lake full of fresh water every 12 hours.
You have to pay admission to park your car and you will then be directed along a sort of waterside promenade which is crowded with souvenir stalls, as well as restaurants, along its length, so it is entirely possible to make a day trip of the visit and enjoy the sunshine under the trees, with peacocks, who wander around freely, approaching you hopefully for a snack. Up at the monastery itself there is a restaurant and rooms should you choose to stay. On our trip we travelled nearly every inch of the country and the best capuccinos we could find were in this restaurant (though, if you don't like whipped cream on your coffee, specify when you are ordering a cappucino or they will just assume you want cream).

The natural spring lake at Sveti Naum is a must see. The springs bubbling up from the sand at the bottom are mesmerising. The nature is stunning and the water is unbelievably clear. I can only imagine how beautiful it must look in spring with all the colours as it was amazing now in winter. Definitely take a boat out on the lake.

There is a regular bus from Ohrid to Sveti Naum. We were approached by a taxi driver who plies the Ohrid - Sveti Naum route who took us there for the same price (picking up and dropping off other passengers along the way). It's worth the travel to get there. So magical.
