This church had the feeling of a welcoming house, as if it was asking me to come in. Unfortunately, being winter, it was closed, so I have to defer that pleasure for my next visit.

So much history in this one spot. it would rival the acropolis as a tourist mecca if only more people knew about it UNESCO provided funding to preserve it.

This renovated church is near the upper town gate in Ohrid. The curator has written a book and thesis on the church and is on hand to enliven the visiting experience. Some of the frescoes date back to the 12th Century.
Next to the church is a museum of frescoes. There are lovely views across the lake and fortress. It is possible to drive up to the church and park nearby but a walk through the old town and its narrow streets and paths is more authentic and atmospheric.
The jewellery on the stall outside was well priced with some unique pieces of Ohrid pearl and amber.

We enjoyed this small renovated church immensely because of its frescoes from the 12 century onward. One of them, behind the altar, is constructed from mosaic made from lapiz lazule. The caretaker has written a book about it which we purchased (in English) and she gave us a tour, her English is not good, but we could figure it out. She was intent on pointing out that the Macedonians consider this area to be the start of the Renaissance before Italy because of the more realistic paintings and the draping of the clothing. Also, look for Christ with wings, I had never seen such a portrayal before. Next door is a small icon museum with labels in English, very nicely done.
