History, archaeological and the Ohrid Literary School was a center of literary and cultural activity where it was educated more than 3,500 disciples.

St. Clement was buried in this monastery, in the tomb which was built by his own hands.

So do you love history? Visit!

As it is not only a holy place, but also an archaeological site. What was the most fascinating for me was the baptistery of the five aisle basilica with hooked crosses (swastikas) on the mosaic floors which date from the period between 4th and 6th century. I was surprised to realize that swastika was primarily a Christian symbol. Many things could be learnt there and if you decide to go to Ohrid Lake, do not miss the opportunity to visit the monastery, which is 250 meters below Samuil's Fortress.

Absolutely agree with Laura F - this is a womderful sight but for a person who doesn't know much about it, it isn't likely to be a meaningful experience. Unfortunately, when I visited it, I didn't know much about the church so my advice will be do your homework before coming there or take a knowledgable person with you.

They are now charging for entry into the Plaoshnik site, and, in my opinion ruining it by building two enormous new buildings which will be a new University. Where in the world would you build, literally on top of ancient ruins from 2nd Century CE and possibly earlier in a UNESCO World Heritage City. I think the whole plan is bonkers. That they are now charging for entry is somewhat offensive, yet sensible. Offensive because there is a church there and they have made no effort whatsoever to label what it is you are looking at, make paths which are not a hazzard to walk along or even sell a guidebook or similar. Sensible because hopefully they will raise some money to invest in these things and not just a huge fence and a ticket booth! The Roman mosaics, old basilica and archealogical remains are well worth a visit though and are of excellent quality, not to mention the new church which, in my opinion has been excellently constructed with the remains of the original building kept visible but preserved, hard to explain but very well done. Just buy a guide book and read up on what you are seeing before you get there because there was no leaflet and nothing on sale explaining what you are looking at when you are there (good job we've been many times and know!).

My partner and I visited the church during our stay in Ohrid, there are beautiful views from up here. And the church has been stored very nicely.
