Reviewed July 1, 2013

Tsar Samuel's Fortress is a fortress in the hill of the old town of Ohrid.Ohrid was the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire during the rule of Samuel in the middle-ages.The castle is renovated, there's not much inside but offers a great view of Ohrid city and lake. The entrance fee 40 MKD( almost 0,5€).
Beautiful!

“Nice views but not much else to see”
Reviewed June 25, 2013

Climbing the hill to the fortress is in itself a nice walk. The fortress' outer walls still stand and you can climb up and look at lake Ohrid. Not much else to see since restoration hasn't gotten very far yet.

“Sam's Fort”
Reviewed June 17, 2013

We had, of course, seen the fort from the moment we arrived in Ohrid. It stands above the town in all its splendour, a majestic and imposing structure which has been there since the 11th century. But burrowing our way up through the narrow paths of the old town, and coming at the fort from an angle, we lost sight of it for much of the way, until we reached the Gallery of Icons (another Ohrid attraction). We were somewhat fatigued by the time we'd reached the fort, but able to gaze with haughty smugness at the taxis which ferried less energetic visitors up through the weaving streets. The entry fee of 30 Macedonian denar was a welcome change after the usual 100 MD fees charged by most of the churches. The walls are spectacular - from the outside this looks like a magnificent fort which could be used to great effect by Hollywood - and the towers and battlements offer amazing views over the lake and the town. Within the walls, however, there is little to be seen of any note. Some excavation seems to have been done, but there are no signs, and there is no information available as to what we are looking at. This could, at some future date. be an attraction which demands a much higher entry fee, although the real value is in the climb up through the old town, and the panoramic views from the fort.

“Wonderful views”
Reviewed April 14, 2013

It had snowed that morning, so the views over the town and lake were beautiful. But the snow made it challenging to get around. There is not much to see of the fortress itself, I think the views would be the draw. The helpful young man in the ticket booth got out the snow shovel when he saw we were determined to mount the walls for the views, nice people here.

“Impressive Fortification”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

In Impressive fortification with great views of a really friendly town. On the High point of the perninsula you can see where the town walls and even a harbour wall on the lake stood. As Big as Conwy in Wales.
Bit tricky to drive and park , better to walk up the Hill. The "Fee" is a couple of Euro for a Family.
If it was in Western Europe it would be overrun with Tourists but here in Macedonia it's fairly quiet. On the way up / down take a look at the Roman Ampithetere. And the Orthodox Church with a reconstruction of the original church next to it made of wood.
