“Medieval Walls”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

We have visited lots of Medieval sites in Europe, but the walls here are fantastic (rebuilt, of course). It also gives the city a great "crown" as it were. No facilities, but if you don't want to walk all the way up the hill, you can take a cab and it is not expensive. Wonderful views.

“Just the view...”
Reviewed July 8, 2012

I have visited this place several time during a decade and the investment of Macedonia government is really impressive. From unknown palce now everyone can see a really rebuild fortress. No cicerone and a guide book for this place!!
But the history of this fortress is tragic. Someone told me one time that the king Samuel sent his army on a battle. The army has been capture and every solder massacred by loosing their eyes as the enemy chose let them blind in term of killing them. Is horrible, but in a several numbers of solders they let one with only one eay blind just to be able sent them back home. I'm not sure if the death of the king is related with this story, but seen the army coming back in such a horrible circumstances sent him end his power and probably his life too by self-killing.
View from the casel is pretty, but the visit can not continue more than 20-25 min. Has nothing else inside except a men giving you a ticket and nothing more.
Empty and a very dry place...

“more could be done...”
Reviewed July 2, 2012

The ancient fortress overlooking Ohrid is not only the most obvious but also one of the most valuable monuments of the town.
There have been fortifications here since ancient times and some extremely rare artefacts have been found here (including a gold death mask).
When visiting the site today it is a bit of an anticlimax.
Excavations are going on but there is not much to see, in fact, the only thing to do is climbing the walls and enjoying the view.
There is a small toilet in the site (no running water) and the workers who are busy here try to ask money from people using it.
I think that if you pay entrance to a site you should be able to use the toilets free of charge.

“Samoil’s Fortress”
Reviewed June 19, 2012

The Ohrid Fortress is one of the largest mediaeval fortifications to be preserved in the Republic of Macedonia. With its massive walls and ramparts, it occupies the entire summit of the hill of Ohrid. The hilly pert of the town was protected on all sides save the south, which faces the lake, by towers and high walls three kilometers in length, stretching as far as the harbor. Entrance to the town was gained by three gates, of which only the Upper Gate has been preserved. The Fortress, in addition to serving the function of defense against enemies, was also an inhabited area and has come to be known as Samoil’s Fortress.

During the reign of Samoil (976 - 1014), and of his successors up to 1018, Ohrid was the capital of the first Macedonian Medieval state. Both before and after Samoil’s time and of his successors the fortress was destroyed and rebuilt again. After the transformation of Samoil’s state into a political and ecclesiastical seat, Ohrid became a real mediaeval metropolis.

Following the epochal archeological excavations done by the archeologist Pasko Kuzman, it is definitely certified that on the terrain of the Samoil's Fortress on the hilly part of Ohrid, several decades of centuries are being connected in three periods: Pre-Samoil’s Period, Samoil’s Period and Post-Samoil’s Period of the history of Ohrid.

“Great views”

Amazing view from the fortress. Overlooks the snow covered mountains of Albania. Best view of the town from up at the fortress. Decent walk to the top of the hill.
