Subject: Sofitel Moorea Ia Ora Beach Resort
Location: Maharepa, Moorea, Society Islands, French Polynesia, South Pacific
Title: yes, it is paradise!
ID#: 193214942

A few days on the beautiful island of moorea, a few nights at the beautiful sofitel resort....a great introduction to French Polynesia before our 2 week trip to the Marquesas on the Aranui. The accommodation and restaurant are not inexpensive, but then, nothing in Polynesia is, and it really was a great place to be spoiled for a few days.
We liked the location of our beach bungalow, with the wonderful warm and turquoise waters of the lagoon a few steps from our verandah and great access to some very good snorkelling! Better, we thought, than the overwater bungalows They look very romantic and private, but we had better access to the beach and the view.
Breakfast, which was included, was excellent, with a vast and varied selection of everything from fruit to omelettes to pastries, and good coffee. the restaurant was also a lovely setting for dinner, which was also good. As noted elsewhere, it is necessary to take a taxi to eat at another restaurant, but Moorea is charming and peaceful because it is a rural island, without a lot of development. We did take a taxi one night to Mahogany, a small and popular restaurant not far away.
And a pickup by van was just part of the deal for a boat tour of the lagoon that we arranged through a local company connected to Moorea tourist board, Hiro's Tours (highly recommended for a day of pleasant cruising and a great introduction to the area at a reasonable price).
As for the Sofitel personnel, they were well trained and warmly welcoming and accommodating, dealing with our few minor problems quickly and efficiently. In all, an excellent experience.

Room Tip: All bungalows looked good, but the beach bungalows would be our choice for view and location

After our cruise around Tahiti we decided to stay in Moorea for 5 days. Our friends and travel agent suggested Sofitel Moorea Resort. Upon arrival we were greeted with friendly staff. We arrived around 1pm and check in was at 2pm. We waited in the reception and met a nice couple who were on there way out. We had a great visit and they had a great stay. 2pm came around and our room was ready. We stayed in a Superior Over-water Bungalow and it was amazing. When we walked in we were surprised with the decor and how nice it was. Up to date bathroom with large shower, king size bed, air conditioned, with ceiling fan as well.
The water in the lagoon was crystal clear and there were so many fish like our own aquarium.
Typical breakfast buffet was included. The service was great, the croissants were amazing and Heinz who was super friendly made the omelets and eggs just right for me.
We purchased the 3 course dinner package for 5 days and I have to say the menu was great. The portions were large especially the appetizers and there was lots to choose on the menu. It was fine dining at it's best with the best views you could ever have. Every night at 7:30 there was Polynesian dancers who were very professional and beautiful and talented. Love at first sight!
The snorkeling was amazing as well as all the water activities. We brought our own but snorkels were included. All the staff were super friendly. I would certainly go back if I get the chance.

There were 2 negatives for this hotel where we spent 5 nights in January. The first was that there was no alternatives for meals within walking distance, and the service slipped to an unacceptable degree on Saturday, particularly for breakfast.

However overall it was a thoroughly enjoyable stay and I don't think we could have picked a better hotel. We were upgrade to a beach front bungalow, and this was ideal with only a few steps to the sea. Rooms were very spacious, with a very comfortable bed, and large shower area extending to outside.

The restaurants were both good with reasonable choice, including a buffet on 2 nights, and Polynesian Dance show most nights. Although expensive this is the norm for French Polynesia in general.

We just arrived home from an 11 day excursion to Tahiti. We started at the Sofitel and loved it. We were advised in order to keep our budget the Beach Side Bungalows were the best value here and I completely agree. We love the beach and this a good one. We were a few steps from the water and a few steps back for a beer. Perfect. We ate at the restaurant every morning and half of the nights and were always treated to a great meal. We stopped in the lounge every night for a drink before dinner, watched the sting rays and visited with other travellers. We rented a car and toured the Island and saw a few places along the way. My navigator (wife) read on the map that down the road a bit was the best beach on the Island, we traveled several miles to this beach which turned out to be the Sofitel. My wife and I both agreed that with Custom Tahiti's help, we picked the right spot.

Room Tip: Beach Side Bungalows were outstanding and just a few steps to an amazing beach. Great value.

We stayed at the Sofitel in Moorea at the beginning of our HM. I have to say that they did everything possible to make us feel special, right from a complimentary upgrade to the sea view, freebies and small but special things to make us feel a part of them. The food options are great, cottages are very well maintained and the service is amazing. The bar has a great view of the lagoon and Tahiti island mountain. Very scenic! We also managed to rent bikes/car/scooters and take a short trip of the island. The resort has all the activities like kayaking, paddle boats, snorkeling and etc. A memorable stay....thanks to the staff at the resort!

Room Tip: Try and book a sea view room if not the over water bunglows. All the rooms are great and well connec...

The sofitel is in my opinion located on the best spot on the island. Very close to the ferry, only 4km from the moorea township (Maharepa) and has the nicest beach, very clear water with wonderful snorkeling, and the prettiest over water bungalows! (we did island tour and atv tour so saw all major resorts to back up this statement).

The rooms were very clean, serviced regularly and the staff are very friendly. We were on over water bungalow 218 which was right at the end so was very private, got a lovely breeze, and looked across to Tahiti!

Room was perfect for us. Amazing shower, snorkeling right off the deck and the bed and pillows were the best I have ever slept on!

Loses one star for value because everything seems to cost, even after paying so much for the hotel
... WiFi is expensive, costs to hire paddle board, peddle boat or kayak, although snorkeling gear is free. However this did mean there were always things available which may not be so if it was free (paddle boarding around the lagoon and bungalows was incredible).

Only let down is the food. Vey expensive (but it is French Polynesia so it is expected) and overall not that great. The breads are always excellent but mains not really to my liking. We ate man lunches and dinners at either the bar, k or pure. Breakfasts had nice pastries but you only got a select few and the rest of the cooked stuff wasn't to my liking, except when it was crepe day - they were good.

Pool is fantastic, whole resort has a great feel and mosquitos were never an issue for us on all of moorea.

Definitely would recommend staying at the sofitel on moorea, I would suggest requesting over water bungalows 214-218 but eat out more than we did as the one time we went outside the resort the food was nicer and they all do free dinner shuttles.

We just returned from a trip to French Polynesia for our 15 year anniversary. Traveled Jan. 16-26th. If your trying to decide which overwater bungalow resort to choose on the island of Moorea....pick this one!!!! Sofitel was the dreamiest place we have ever stayed! The beach is the best on the island (we drove around whole island and also stayed a few nights on other side). The service was top notch, the bed was extra comfy, the overwater bungalow was a dream come true. We had room 115, which was a perfect location. The lagoon makes you feel like you have your own private aquarium right out your door....grab your snorkel and go down your private ladder into the lagoon! Room service was fantastic and allowed us to enjoy the beautiful bungalow and its glass window on the floor that looks into the lagoon. The beach bar and grill was also very good, we had the Mahi burger for lunch and it was fantastic. The infinity pool was a nice way to get refreshed after being in the ocean all day & looks over the beach. We booked a couples massage at the spa and it was a really nice spa with great service. We have stayed in some amazing places, and I must say that this place was our favorite & is the tropical destination you have always dreamed of. Don't hesitate to book this resort! Also, if you are able to stay in an overwater bungalow, it is worth the extra $. Otherwise, the land bungalows look really nice too.

Room Tip: Bungalows 112-120 are the most private and are near the end of the dock looking out away from other...
