We stayed at the Sofitel in Moorea at the beginning of our HM. I have to say that they did everything possible to make us feel special, right from a complimentary upgrade to the sea view, freebies and small but special things to make us feel a part of them. The food options are great, cottages are very well maintained and the service is amazing. The bar has a great view of the lagoon and Tahiti island mountain. Very scenic! We also managed to rent bikes/car/scooters and take a short trip of the island. The resort has all the activities like kayaking, paddle boats, snorkeling and etc. A memorable stay....thanks to the staff at the resort!

Room Tip: Try and book a sea view room if not the over water bunglows. All the rooms are great and well connec...

The sofitel is in my opinion located on the best spot on the island. Very close to the ferry, only 4km from the moorea township (Maharepa) and has the nicest beach, very clear water with wonderful snorkeling, and the prettiest over water bungalows! (we did island tour and atv tour so saw all major resorts to back up this statement).

The rooms were very clean, serviced regularly and the staff are very friendly. We were on over water bungalow 218 which was right at the end so was very private, got a lovely breeze, and looked across to Tahiti!

Room was perfect for us. Amazing shower, snorkeling right off the deck and the bed and pillows were the best I have ever slept on!

Loses one star for value because everything seems to cost, even after paying so much for the hotel
... WiFi is expensive, costs to hire paddle board, peddle boat or kayak, although snorkeling gear is free. However this did mean there were always things available which may not be so if it was free (paddle boarding around the lagoon and bungalows was incredible).

Only let down is the food. Vey expensive (but it is French Polynesia so it is expected) and overall not that great. The breads are always excellent but mains not really to my liking. We ate man lunches and dinners at either the bar, k or pure. Breakfasts had nice pastries but you only got a select few and the rest of the cooked stuff wasn't to my liking, except when it was crepe day - they were good.

Pool is fantastic, whole resort has a great feel and mosquitos were never an issue for us on all of moorea.

Definitely would recommend staying at the sofitel on moorea, I would suggest requesting over water bungalows 214-218 but eat out more than we did as the one time we went outside the resort the food was nicer and they all do free dinner shuttles.

We just returned from a trip to French Polynesia for our 15 year anniversary. Traveled Jan. 16-26th. If your trying to decide which overwater bungalow resort to choose on the island of Moorea....pick this one!!!! Sofitel was the dreamiest place we have ever stayed! The beach is the best on the island (we drove around whole island and also stayed a few nights on other side). The service was top notch, the bed was extra comfy, the overwater bungalow was a dream come true. We had room 115, which was a perfect location. The lagoon makes you feel like you have your own private aquarium right out your door....grab your snorkel and go down your private ladder into the lagoon! Room service was fantastic and allowed us to enjoy the beautiful bungalow and its glass window on the floor that looks into the lagoon. The beach bar and grill was also very good, we had the Mahi burger for lunch and it was fantastic. The infinity pool was a nice way to get refreshed after being in the ocean all day & looks over the beach. We booked a couples massage at the spa and it was a really nice spa with great service. We have stayed in some amazing places, and I must say that this place was our favorite & is the tropical destination you have always dreamed of. Don't hesitate to book this resort! Also, if you are able to stay in an overwater bungalow, it is worth the extra $. Otherwise, the land bungalows look really nice too.

Room Tip: Bungalows 112-120 are the most private and are near the end of the dock looking out away from other...

The resort is on a beautiful beach, on an amazing island and the over-water bungalows really are beautiful. But the service in this hotel is average. Maybe it is because we were not in the "high season" but there was not enough staff at the restaurant so be prepared to wait a lot... The staff is running everywhere to try to do the job but you don't always get what you ordered, and you don't get the table you booked... Last but not least the room are not super clean and there was mold in the shower... not exactly what you would expect. We had a good time but won't return for sure.

My husband and I were at the Sofitel January 8-15, 2014 It was great! We loved the property, the food, the rooms, and the service.

Hotel Room: We booked an overwater bungalow, and ended up in room 102. It was in the middle of the overwater bungalows. We loved it. The bed was super comfortable. Best nights sleep I've had in probably 10 years. The room was spacious, plenty of room to lay out all of our scuba gear and not feel like we were tripping over it. We are coffee drinkers, so we were really pleased to see that there was a kettle to heat up water, and free coffee and creamer packets. Room service was excellent. They came by twice a day and were very friendly.

Beach: All the travel books say the beach is the best at the Sofitel, it's true. It's soft cream colored coral sand that is raked and clean. You know this is important if you you've ever been on a beach that has a lot of sea debris. I felt comfortable just throwing a beach towel down and laying on the sand. However, there are free chairs, so you don't have to lay on the beach if you don't want to. At check-in the hotel gives you a card for a beach towel and snorkel gear which you can use during your entire stay. There is a little shack on the beach that offers all kinds of fun water (and land) activities like kayaks, paddle boards, paddle boats, bicycles, etc. We rented the kayaks, the paddle boards, and the bicycles, and had a great time.

Restaurant / food: We did not do the meal plan. We rented bicycles instead and rode down to the Champion grocery (approx. 5k / 3M) from the hotel. We picked up fresh fruit, granola bars, wine, and cheese. It was a fun experience and I would recommend you do this even if you do have the meal plan. We did have dinner in the restaurant one night, the food was good and the price was in line with Resort prices. We aren't big eaters, so we had dinner twice in the bar area. We ordered the charcuterie plate (various meats and some veggies), and a bottle of wine. It was very tasty. We just sat there and enjoyed the music and views of Tahiti. There were three small stingrays that hung out by the bar deck every night. Also, I'm not sure if it was just the time of year we were there, but we saw a rainbow between Moorea and Tahiti almost every afternoon.

We arrived early in the day so the front desk held our bags and gave us a towel and snorkel gear. Check-out is at noon, and check-in is at 2pm. That only gives the hotel 2 hours to clean the rooms, which they do very well. If you arrive early in the morning, don't expect to get access to your room right away.

Location: We went on an ATV excursion and got a good 'feel' for the location of the Sofitel versus the other hotels. The Sofitel has the best location, in my opinion. It's an easy bike ride to the grocery store, to Cook's bay, and to the Fruit Juice factory. It's the only hotel on the island with a view of Tahiti, and great snorkeling from the beach and your overwater bungalow.

We ate out at a couple of the local restaurants. We had dinner at Rudy's and at The Mohogany. Both restaurants were excellent. I ordered the coconut shrimp at both restaurants and was very pleased with my choice. My husband ordered the stuffed parrot fish at Rudy's, it was excellent. We spent about $120 US dollars at each location for dinner (which included a bottle of wine). Both restaurants picked us up at the hotel, and dropped us back off at the hotel after our meals. We also rode our bikes to The Moorea Beach Café, which has a very swanky California vibe and great salads, AND, to 'The Canadian' (I think the sign is actually 'The Cannadiene'). My husband ordered a chicken sandwich and I decided to be bad and order the 'Monster' cheeseburger. It was AWESOME! It was also the size of my head. We spent around $50 US dollars for lunch.

Room Tip: We saw them spraying for mosquitos around the garden bungalows. If you pick a garden or even a beac...

The very best part of this resort was the beautiful overwater bungalow we stayed in! I loved the deck, with very comfortable chairs, the snorkeling was the most amazing that I have seen anywhere, and the glass window in the floor was so cool to watch fish, and maybe even a stingray at night swim by!
We did go and get groceries on our first full day in Moorea, because the food, water, everything at the resort is very expensive!
The service was 'ok', but I do think that's just their way (we never got a bill for a meal/drinks without having to flag someone down and ask).

However, the biggest downfall of this resort was alllllll of the screaming children (babies to a bit older) the kids around 8-10 years old seemed to run around the resort with absolutely no parental supervision...we even saw some French children scooping tiny fish out of the pond and killing them!!!!! I wish that at least some of the staff would have stopped them! I went and stood very firmly right beside them, and even though we don't speak the same language, they did seem to get the hint, thank goodness!
Also, we had a family of about 25 people (not an exageration) check in to maybe 3 overwater bungalows...we saw them getting many extra towels from housekeeping and bringing in blow-up air mattresses into the rooms!! and they alll partied on the deck (again with screaming small children) right beside our room...that was luckily only the very last day, and I had an ipod and noise cancelling earphones, otherwise all of the noise would have really ruined our trip!! So this is my piece of advise to management: Please allow a maximum number of people (2 adults and i suppose 2 children at most!!!) to check into the overwater bungalows!
