“Don't be tricked by previous good reviews”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 3, 2010

Spend 2 weeks at this supposed 5 star Hotel. We have travelled to various places throughout the world, we was very suprised that Egyptian 5 star hotels should only have a 3 star plus rating. Royal Albatros Moderna must have purchased a couple of stars from E Bay.

Food - Bland, poorly presented, cheap (Butlins much better)
Drinks - Thrown into your glass by the bar staff, (Rum & Beer ok )
Room - Requires refurb
Room Staff - Brilliant
Bed - Brilliant
Pool / Area - Floors crumbling (refurb required)
Night Entertainment - Beach Party on Tuesday
Location - Long walk to main area of Nabq Bay
Safety deposit boxes - A few in some rooms (Not Ours)
View - We booked 2 pool view rooms, which cost an extra £228. We actually got rooms overlooking the building site next door.
I think GLOBAL LATEDEALS.COM conned several others parties
Attractions - Quad Bikes & diving

Dear ANGLER66,

Greetings from Royal Albatros Moderna, Sharm El Sheikh and thank you for posting your opinion on this website.

We are sorry that the resort was not for you and appreciate your feedback. We would like to point out that we do our best to cater to the widest variety of guest preferences and to that end kindly find the following information below:

As for the hotel rating, it is a five star hotel as defined by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism, as well as the tour operators who are selling it. As these entities are very well versed in the standard of hotels in the region and what constitutes a five star, we do not feel it unreasonable to argue that their broader experience has led them to the valid conclusion that the Royal Albatros Moderna is a five star hotel. That the hotel is operating as a five star with nearly full occupancy and nearly 90% recorded guest satisfaction over the last six years, only confirms this, but we do appreciate that different guests have different expectations and that it is our responsibility to try to meet or exceed those expectations whenever possible.

Regarding food we have 9 restaurants in the hotel.
So, you can choose one of our 6 “all inclusive” and 3 “a la carte” restaurants:
1) Mediterranean Restaurant - Mediterranean cuisine - open buffet;
2) L'asiatique - Asian cuisine - open buffet;
3) Zum Kaiser - German cuisine - open buffet;
4) Il Caminetto - Italian Kitchen - open buffet;
5) Tagine Restaurant - Oriental (Egyptian) Kitchen - open buffet;
6) Beach Pizzeria - open buffet;
7) Thai Restaurant - "a la carte";
8) Sushi bar - "a la carte";
9) Fish Market - "a la carte"
We also have an "a la carte" restaurant with Thai Cuisine and a sushi bar "White Elephant", where our chefs will cook for you a nice tasty exclusive meal which you can choose and order from the menu.
All the above mentioned restaurants are working under the base of 24 hours nonstop food and all our guests get the timing of the food and all inclusive system upon their check in.
All our staff members are very well trained according to the hospitality skills training schedule under the supervision of the Ministry of Tourism and guest satisfaction is the priority number one in the list of the hotel management which reflects in the excellent behavior, fast and correct service under the standard level with very high experience.

Our hotel spacious rooms are pleasantly furnished and nicely decorated. All the hotel rooms are equipped with satellite television, down pillows, tea & coffee corner, mini bar, bathroom shaving mirror with shower and bathtub, toilet, bidet, hairdryer, multi-line telephone(s) with voice mail, refrigerated private bar, in-room safe box, balcony or terrace, most of the rooms are with a stunning sea view and all the rooms are equipped with air-conditioner during summer or heating during winter time. All the hotel rooms are cleaned on a daily basis, there is a daily change of facial and body towels, bathroom mats and pillow covers. Each room passes a daily maintained check. Additionally to that, our guest relations office makes courtesy calls for all guests in house in order to be sure that all our guests are provided with a high quality of service as per our company image and policy. We have also won a prestigious award as a leading 5 star hotel in Egypt from Hotels4U & medhotels, which is a part of Thomas Cook.

Regarding your remarks about entertainment I'm sorry to inform you that you were quiet not objective. Our international entertainment team speaks English, German, French, Italian, Polish, Russian and Arabic languages. We offer a wide variety of entertainment in our hotel. Loved;
Transfer under 12mins
Free use of jetty to marina for snorkelling (otherwise 4euro a visit each if in any other hotel)
Crystal clear water
Edge of resort - no hotel to left just yet
Massive complex with many pools
Staff best ever experienced, very very friendly
New all inclusive Oriental restaurant with Chinese chef
For a small encouraging tip of couple euro, the excellent beach waiter service
Show cooking and fresh pizza and pasta cooked to order
Nearly 24hr food available
Walk along the sea front along all the other hotel fronts (this hotel has the best choice)
Glass bottom boat trip to Naam Bay
Billiant choice of foods for the kids
The ankle deep sea for 10mins walk - very safe for young children
Snorkelling amazing and free jetty a bonus

Disliked;
Other guests with no respect for dress code in the evening - dispite signs, no long trousers were worn by the majority of men
Main restaurants bog standard all inclusive food - lack of sea food
Walk 10mins down the jetty to waist high water to swim
The Eastern Europeans take some getting used to - butting in etc. but didn't bother us
No bath in our room
Screaming kids around waterslide pool (not used to it !)

Summary;
I would definitely stop here again just for the kids sake - the staff were incredible and the choice of pools and food for the children amazing. The beach fantastic, transfer quick and Egypt very friendly.

I personally wouldn't stop here again as a couple as it was a children's hotel and didn't live upto it's 5star standard in the evening.

We stopped in room 1475 sea view in the refurbished rooms overlooking the ampitheatre - excellent - only downside, you walk up and down 3 flights to get to it, no lifts. We had royal box seats for the shows the animation team did ! But some couples or families with babies might find it too noisy between 8.30 - 10.30 when music playing - also the beach disco is very loud till 1am once a week, so you might want to have a room nearer reception for peace and quiet.
They are turning the ampitheatre into a waterpark and upgrading of the rooms ongoing.

Will definitely be returning to Egypt again, possibly try the Jaz Mirabell next door as it seemed a higher standard (no screaming kids on water slides !).

This hotel is value for money and i wish people would bear in mind that there is not hotel anywhlere that can cater for every taste. Firstly to the food which is bearable, you do need to visit all restaurants to put together a decent plate of food but wheres the hardship in that? We travelled with four young children who ALL found plenty to fill their tummies and none of us were affected by the dreaded Egyptian tummy. Ice cream is only available between 10 and 12 and also 1600 and 1800 which is ample time and stops the kids over indulging on it.

Drinks are fine although beer is served in very small glasses, best service is either at the pool bar or the beach bar,the staff at the restaurant bar are quite rude. We had the local wine and this is quite bearable. You also get plenty of fresh bottled water in your rooms.

Rooms are comfortable and clean. We did request ajoining or rooms next to each other as travelling with children. We did not get allocate these on arrival but the next day, the helpful reception staff moved us to more suitable rooms. On both occasions, we did look out over the building site but it did not bother us as we were very rarely in the rooms.

The pools are all clean and the water temperature is lovely, sunbeds do get taken early but there are always loads down on the beach. The jetty on the beach is a must, fish are brilliant. The evening entertainment is very low key but if you want talent contests and karoeke,head to Butlins. At least nobody has to put up with booming music all night.

The guys who sell excursions do hound you at the pool for the first couple of days, we booked the quad biking and this was really good value but anything else is cheaper if booked outside the hotel.

There is a man with a camel called Bob Marley at the hotel. He charges a lot for a ride on the camel, if you walk along the beach approx 10 minutes down outside the First Choice hotel there are a few local guys with more camels and a little baby camel. They will take you in the water on the camels,take piccies,gallop if you dare and are the most friendly guys you will ever meet. Also outside this hotel is a guy who will make the sand jars. He is very good and at least half the price of the guy who does them at the Albatros.

We really enjoyed our holiday, the kids more so,and if the kids enjoy it,you enjoy it. I know there is better out there but for the money you pay it is well worth the visit.

We had read the reviews and were slightly worried but we arrived and it look beautiful very grand. We had to wait a while for our room But when we got there is was lovely huge walk in shower and massive room. Unfortunatly when we woke up the next morning we found our room did not look out over the garden (that is what we book) but to a building site. We asked and were told they could not move us for a couple of days. we ended staying where we were as we thought well we only go back to the room to shower change and sleep.

The place was very clean, the food is boring and we did get fed up with having to que. In the end we ate at 6.30 of evening just so we could have a calm meal ( not that me or my daughter ate anything after day 3) and yes the Russians, Polish etc are very rude and do not que. However Day 3 of holiday all 4 of us were very ill lucky my husband and eldest daughter got over it within 2 days however my daughter (13) and myslef were still ill even after arriving home 2 weeks later andended up going to hospital.

Personally i think the bug is in the hotel because any one you spoke to all had "had it" or were "having it" you could see every one walking about with the packets of tablets from the pharmacy and yes that was a rip off too. I took Imodium plus but they just did not work and also used the tablets from the pharmacy, a pack of 6 for £20 and you had to take 2 three times a day add that up for two people for the next 10 days.

I found the people over their only interested in you if you gave them a tip otherwise they just ignored you. Sorry will never go there evey again back to Greece for us.

What a lovely place! This was our first time to egypt and we loved it! The weather was amazing and the hotel was the same!
This hotel had everything you needed for a week away, We didnt leave the hotel all week so that says it all really.
The staff couldnt do enough for you they were great! We went to the beach most days and the waiter would come up to us on the beach and bring out morning milkshake or our fav cocktail :-)
5 star hotel and would love to go back!

Having read quite a few positive reviews before leaving we were quite optimistic that we would have a good holiday, unfortunately it did not live up to our expectations- certainly not a 5 or even 4 star hotel- 3 star at best.

Firstly lets start with the good points:
The hotel itself looks very nice, the pools are lovely and if you have kids (which we don't) there is a fantastic kids pool which I am sure would keep little ones entertained for hours. Our room was pretty decent with a huge bed, great air conditioning (much needed in 40+ degree heat!) and a walk in shower. The relaxation pool is great if you want a relaxing time- the active pool, as the name would suggest, gets very noisy.

Unfortunately that is where the good points end, so I will continue with the bad:
Food
The food in my opinion was very poor. There were a number of occasions where I literally couldn't find a single thing to eat so I ended up having nothing or some chips. There are a number of restaurants but the choice is so poor and half the dishes resemble something you would think twice about feeding your dog. My Boyfriend and I literally survived the week on pizza and the odd bowl of very bland pasta- was very glad to get home for some decent food.

Tummy
I got ill on the 3rd day which in some ways was a blessing as I literally could not face eating anything- a great excuse to not eat any of the awful food! The pharmacy on site is ridiculously expensive- £15 for immodium equivalent.

Drinks
I have to admit that after the food, this was my biggest bug bear. Firstly the glasses were tiny- less than half a pint and even then they didn't fill your glass- we were drinking beer and each glass had about 3 mouthfuls in it. We did notice some other English people had brought their own pint glasses- a good tip- but why should you have to?! The beer was ok but there was so little other choice of drinks that its pretty much the only alcohol we drank. They had NO diet coke which I found really annoying as I only drink diet coke and was therefore even more limited- some bars had bottles of Coke Zero but it was always warm and as ice is a no no was not an option. Finally on the drinks I was really surprised that there was no table service at meal times- you had to go and queue for your drinks each time you wanted one, which brings me onto my next point....

Queuing
We seemed to spend half the holiday queuing! Queue for drinks, queue for pizza, queue for pasta- so much so that I don't think we ever actually ate a meal together! That, added to the unbelievably rude Russians who will literally barge you out of the way to get what they want it was as far from a relaxing time that you could imagine.

Sun Beds
Our first morning we got up at about 8.30am and were very surpised that there was not a single free sun bed around any of the pools. This became a joke and is a real problem that the hotel need to sort. We did get up earlier the next day (supposed to be on holiday?) and managed to get 2 beds around the relaxation pool but even that pool was literally full at before 8am. I think people put there towels out before they go to bed and half the time don't even come down to the pool until the afternoon- so selfish in my opinion but the hotel seem to allow it.

All in all, not a good experience, The hotel had great potential as the grounds are lovely but it just seems they are trying to cut costs at every point and as a result the quality is very poor.

We would not return.

Dear BlondeNic,

Greetings from Royal Albatros Moderna and thank you for taking time to post your opinion here.

We're very disappointed to know that you did not enjoy your holiday with us, but please, let me clear out some points for you in order to let your good self, other guests and reviewers have an idea of our hotel services:

Regarding food, we have 9 different restaurants in the hotel.
So, you can choose one of our 6 “all inclusive” and 3 “a la carte” restaurants:
1) Mediterranean Restaurant - Mediterranean cuisine - open buffet;
2) L'asiatique - Asian cuisine - open buffet;
3) Zum Kaiser - German cuisine - open buffet;
4) Il Caminetto - Italian Kitchen - open buffet;
5) Tagine Restaurant - Oriental (Egyptian) Kitchen - open buffet;
6) Beach Pizzeria - open buffet;
7) Thai Restaurant - "a la carte";
8) Sushi bar - "a la carte";
Concerning your comments about queues, it is far not a constant case in our hotel.

That being said, we feel we must stress that any "tummy" disease you experienced would not have been a result of anything you ate in the hotel. We feel confident of this because our hotel complies with HAACP standards of food hygiene and is audited monthly by a UK based health and safety company. We consistently score over 90% (using UK standards) and a score over 80% is considered excellent. To put it simply, the rice, meat, salads and everything else we serve are perfectly safe for consumption and we spare no effort or expense to insure that they will always be that way.

As for the pharmacy and its prices, I would like to inform you that it doesn't belong to the hotel, it belongs to the pharmacy company, which has its pharmacies in many other 5 star hotels in Sharm El Sheikh. But I would like to assure you that we will pass your comments regarding this issue to them.

As for drinks and bars, we are pleased to suggest our guests 9 "all inclusive" bars all around the hotel as follows:
1) Beach Bar;
2) Caravan Bar
3) Active Pool Bar;
4) Irish pub;
5) Terrace Bar;
6) Sim Sima, oriental cafe;
7) Lobby bar;
8) Relaxation Pool Bar;
9) Aqua Park Bar;
10) VIP bar "White Elephant" with an excellent quality of the international alcoholic beverages ("a la carte").

Regarding your comments about "rude Russians", please, kindly be informed that there are a lot of guests of different nationalities in our hotel. Each nationality has its own customs, traditions, way of life and mentality, which can seem a bit strange for a foreigner. But in fact all our guests, regardless of their nationality are treated by the same nice and respected way and all of them are very kind and polite.

At the moment we have around 2000 sunbeds on the hotel territory for 680 existing hotel rooms. This amount is quiet enough for our guests.

Thank you again and we hope you will consider a return visit as we would be grateful for a second opportunity to show you a great holiday.

Best regards,
