My husband and I visited Sea Gardens from 24th June to 8th July 2013 and as it was our first visit to Egypt we were a little apprehensive. On arrival the hotel looked lovely as it was clean and quiet. At check in we were offered an upgrade from a garden view room to a pool view room free of charge which we gladly accepted. We were quickly taken to our room which was a spacious family room comprising of two single beds in the main bedroom and two single beds in another room with a large bathroom. We went to the restaurant for something to eat and were pleasantly surprised. The hotel offers a 10 day rolling menu for the restaurant with one night being oriental night and the next night being fish night for example. There was a large variety of fresh bread, salads and desserts to choose from along with meat, fish, potatoes and pasta most evenings.
On our return to the room it became apparent that our air conditioning was not working correctly so after a phone call to reception and an hours wait an engineer was sent to our room who quickly said that he wouldn't be able to fix it until the morning. We asked to be moved as it was a warm 35 degrees in the evening and we desperately wanted to use the A/C so somebody was sent to our room within 10 minutes to help move our bags to another room. The next room was equipped with a double bed and two single beds and a large balcony which still overlooked the pool area.
The pool area was incredibly clean and was very quiet for most of our holiday with activities being provided throughout the day. One downside to the pool area was the masseurs and red sea diving reps/sales people who were constantly trying to sell you excursions and treatments. Day after day we were telling them that we weren't interested but we were still asked each day. The pool bar at Sea Gardens was good with snacks being provided between 12-2pm. Snacks consisted of pizza and chips, burger and chips or hot-dog and chips but fresh pastries were available from 10am-12pm and sandwiches available from 2-4pm but you had to be quick as there weren't many available.
This hotel is one of three on the same complex with the others being Sea Life and Sea Club. Sea Gardens is the smallest and most definitely the quietest of all three but it is the only one without a shopping arcade. This was not a major problem as we were able to walk through to the Sea Life (closer) to use their shops.
We went to one evening entertainment show whilst we were there and it was the fire show. Being aged 24 and 29 we lasted about 10 minutes at the show before making a swift exit as it looked more like people trying to guide a plane to land rather than a 'fire show'. We didn't go to any of the other shows so I cannot pass comment on them.
We were enjoying a quiet relaxing holiday when both of us became ill. I don't think this had anything to do with the hotel food but more likely the trip to Cairo which we took which included lunch on the Nile. One day we stayed in the room for the majority of the day and when approached by the cleaner (who was new to the one we had had for the first week and a half) we specified that we did not wish to have the room cleaned this day as we were both ill. We decided to nip out to grab something to eat as we hadn't eaten properly for a few days and we were out of the room for all of 25 minutes. On our return it became apparent that in this space of time the room had been cleaned and my phone had mysteriously disappeared. It is partly my own fault for not using the safe but as we had just nipped out and asked for the room not to be cleaned I didn't think anymore about it. It was only on the following day when my morning alarm didn't go off that I realised it was missing from the room. I phoned reception who said that they would send somebody up to us and after 40 minutes I rang them back and clearly stated that I wanted to speak to somebody. During this time the new cleaner knocked on the door and I told him what had happened and that hotel security were on their way up to the room to which he replied 'is your safe box not working?'.
Five members of staff turned up at our room including security, housekeeping, cleaners and the general manager. After proving to them that is was not in our room and letting them have a look around themselves we were told that they would look into it and see what they could do. We were called to a meeting that evening with the General Manager and our rep from MTS where we were informed that they could not find the mobile phone but they took my email address to contact me if they ever came across it. They were apologising profusely and we were offered a late check out from the room free of charge in the way of an apology. The cleaner continued to clean our block and the rooms either side of us but we hung the 'do not disturb' sign on the door as we didn't want our room cleaning after the incident.
I am not blaming the cleaner as I have no way to prove who it was but I can say that he was the only person with access to the room that we know of. This incident disappointed me because when using a hotel for two weeks on a summer holiday there is a degree of trust that you place in the hotel and its staff.
Apart from this incident, all staff members were incredibly friendly and helpful at all times and were always trying to talk to people. We never went without a drink when sitting in the lobby bar as when we were nearing the end of one, another was placed on the table.
Overall, the holiday and hotel was good and we would definitely return to Egypt. I would probably think twice about booking this hotel again but we probably just had a bad experience. I would recommend the hotel and area to other people but please ensure you use the rooms safety deposit box.
