On a group tour to Bahariya, we stopped to see the museum and excavation site of the Golden Mummies. It was late on a Friday and as a part of the Muslim holiday Eid el Adha. We saw the mummies and they were quite interesting. However, there are no descriptions accompanying the exhibit. From what other say, the museum is an upgrade in recent years. The location is air conditioned and the venue is clean.
Right down the road, in walking distance, is the excavation site for the Golden Mummies. It's not a large site. When we arrived, the gates were open, but what appeared to be the primary site, where you needed to walk down stairs to see the full excavation, was padlocked and not accessible. We were told that we could return on our return to the town and see the actual burial.
When we returned on Sunday afternoon and the guards were on site at the burial ground, they would not honor our tickets which were now two days old. We explained (our guide was Egyptian) our situation, but they insisted that we each pay the full entrance fee (45LE) AGAIN. Totally unfair since the only thing we hadn't seen was the burial.
