Cairo, Egypt

Nice place if you don't have water shortage problems

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jan 10, 2013
I spent New Year's Eve in this hotel with my 6 friends because we thought it would be better to sleep one night in a hotel in our 2-nights/3 days White desert tour, although after spending night in White desert I think we should have slept both nights in the desert because it's really special adventure. This hotel was chosen because it had better prices (cca 60$/double room) than Qasr El Bawity Hotel (which was our first choice) and it had good reviews. We had rooms around the hot spring - which was small but deep pool with red-couloured water (due to the high percentage of iron in it) but for us it was too cold for bath (although water was hot). Room was big enough and seemed clean but the bedding wasn't. What really disturbed us was realizing next morning that there is no water so we couldn't have shower or go to toilet and nobody bothered to tell us what happen or when can we expect to get water. I think it would be decent of them at least to charge us less for the rooms at this situation. On the bright side I can tell that Peter (one of the owners of the Hotel) seemed like a nice and friendly guy who tries to keep this hotel above Egypt standards but due to the surrounding and problems like the one we experienced this isn't easy job. This hotel is good choice as a sleeping place on your way to the desert (if you don't want to sleep in tents) but I couldn't see myself spending there few days for any other reason.

On recommendation from our Desert Tour company, we booked 1 night at this hotel (1x double and 1xtriple room). Both rooms were equipped with 3 single beds. The rooms were spacious with heaters and warm blankets, mosquito nets on the front door, bar fridge with decently priced beer and softdrinks, nice sized bathroom with small sized bath tub and shower head over bath tub.
We arrived at around 1:30pm to a refreshing welcome drink (Hibiscus juice) and a substantial and tasty lunch (which was pre-booked). The lunch was traditionally Egyptian with salad starters and local bread, main meals of battered fried fish with rice and veg, ending with a plate of bananas. Supper was an equally tasty beef curry with rice and veg. The buffet breakfast provided a decent selection of tasty treats including, local bread, beans, boiled eggs, pancakes, jams etc.
There is a pathway from the hotel up to Black Mountain which makes for a great sunset experience and it is free of charge! There are also decently priced rugs and trinkets for sale in the reception area.
The owner Peter is such a bubbly host and greeted us with the same zeal on arrival and departure! My only small complaint was a remark that he made about holding our luggage while we were camping in the desert (since we didnt book the desert tour with him). However, he did hold our luggage without additional charge. I thought this worked out well, especially since our stay at his hotel was based on the recommendation from our desert tour company.

Room tip: Make sure you watch the sunset from Black Mountain. Do not hesitate to book on a full board basis because the meals are delicious.

The hotel has a moderate but anyway a tasteful kitchen . the moderate Rooms are clean , containing a shower and toilet .The hotel is managed on an european way.Excellent position to start a visit to the black and white desert in a 4x4. Price / quality of a room is correct.

Room tip: situated in a nice & quite neighboarhood of the oasis

I have recently stayed at this hotel with a large group of friends. The host and owner Peter is a very friendly and meticulous German. The hotel is basic in luxuries but very good in cleanliness one can expect in remote Egyptian locations. Rooms are spacious and in good condition. The hotel is well spread out providing groups or individuals space to relax and have fun at the same time. We didn't have aircon or TV in the room but the fan was adequate and we didn't need the TV. Peter & his team of locals organize wonderful desert trips and he did a commendable job for us, a group of almost 30 person in 8 different vehicles. His crew of local guides are professionals in their job and behave well. Issam our tourguide-in-charge was good and ensured that the trip was on time and still we didn't feel rushed. He can further improve on his skills by advising first timers where to spend much of their time. We ended up spending disproportionate time in black desert and had to contend with lesser time in White desert.

Room tip: Please plan well in advance as this place is normally fully booked in the peak seasons.

After a 4 hour drive from Cairo you arrive at the hotel, beeing welcomed by the very friendly and helpful host Peter. The Hotel looks freshly painted and the buildings and grounds are charming.
The rooms (I had a single) were very clean and tidy. My bed was very comfortable and the room even had a TV and split aircon (either didn't use, it wasn't hot anymore during the night and I enjoyed the company of my friend and did"nt need to watch tv).
After a delicious dinner we sat for hours in the alfresco restaurant just chatting. The breakfast buffet included boiled eggs, Cheese, Jam, Cucumber, Tomatoes, local bread, Crepe and a choice of Nescafe or Tea.
Peter organised two trips for us, both excellent. On the first day we had a tour visiting the Baharia Oasis with Salt lake, several mountains and witnessed the harvest of dates.
The next day we left for a trip into the Black and White desert. We camped in the white desert and decided not to use the tents but sleep under ste stars. The Milky Way above us and several shooting stars to see. This trip was just breath taking, beautiful and absolutely amazing.
This is not for you if you like luxury. The Camp is basic, no toilet (use a hiding place behind a hill and dig a little hole in the sand..) But if you are a friend of nature and natural beauty, this will be your thing!
I would have loved to stay longer in the desert and an additional night in the Hotel before returning to busy Cairo, but I didn't have enough time for that. Certainly want to go back!!
Peter is very helpful and you can ask him for advise if you are unsure what to do in the area. He is well respected by the local community and speeks fluent German, English, Arabic and Japanese (if not more..).

Room tip: We stayed in the outer area, near the mountain, which was very quiet.

Nice location, quiet and peaceful. Nice food. Fantastic tours organized by the staff. Not a luxury place, but the best place to be in Bahariyya Oasis. Best place to enjoy and appreciate the black and white desert, to relax and to scape for a while of Cairo's crazyness. I'll come back!
