This is one of the nicest artisan markets i've visited ever. The better day is Saturday, because many producers from the towns around come down the mountains to sell their products.
Other resellers won't think it twice in tell you lies about they produce the handcrafts, so don't expect much honesty about their experience making the products, even you can meet the original producer, it's difficult to really know.
If you don't look much surprised for the handcrafts, they will ask you "name your price, buddy" (in spanish "dime tu precio, amigo") so you would like to ask around before buying if you're worried about your budget.
Also, around you can find very cheap street food, well cooked, with soup and second from US$ 1.75, and some other meals from US $0.50.

This little market lived up to the hype, it was smaller than expected. It is promoted as the largest outdoor market in South America, when you look at the town square you might question this. Colourful woven mats are the most popular item for sale, closely followed by bags and crazy woollen mask. Other more indigenous products such as pan pipes and indian prayer catchers with exotic feathers are also available to haggle over. Many people are dressed in the traditional Olavaleño ponchos and blouses, ask before taking photo. some are rathers shy. There is none of the pushiness you find in other such markets.

This is a plaza in the heart of Otavalo that is completely taken over by stalls selling all manner of local weavings and handicrafts. However, the Saturday market is what you want to see, where the surrounding streets are completely taken over by vendors and stalls. It is a riotous, colorful experience. On Saturdays, there are three major markets - the Animal Market, the Handicraft Market and the Vegetable Market. Saturday markets must be 20 times larger than the daily Poncho plaza market. On Saturdays, you can also buy great meals of roast pork with maize for as little as $2. We had one of our favorite meals at one of these food stalls - just make sure the meat is hot.

I enjoyed talking and working with the different familoes and mostly generations of women that worked to support their families by making and selling absolutely gorgeous alpaca scarves etc and really neat crafted jewelry.
