Rooms are luxurious and quaint. Best nights sleep. The place is beautiful, great place for weddings. This place looks like its out of a movie. Staff extremely helpful and friendly. Hot showers, wifi, peace and close to Otavalo market for shopping! I wish I was back there!

Hacienda Cusin is a remarkable and unique place to stay not only in the Otavalo area, but a must-seen landmark in Ecuador. It's full of relics and elegant details everywhere. The staff is great and friendly. The food and services are AAA. My favorite thing to do while staying there is walking around the gardens, you just can't take enough pictures of such marvelous place.

If this place didn’t exist someone would have to invent it. Fortunately that someone was, indeed is, Nik Millhouse. He took a vision, laced it with love and passion and created this wonderful oasis. At one end of the scale, it is an astonishing re-creation of Spanish-colonial life right down to the lavish furnishings. On the other hand it is eccentric, irreverent (viz. the ‘Basil’baroque altar, with cui (guineapig) angels, indigenous tree-crosses, above a large stone fireplace), rude (heaven to hell murals), crazy, crammed with characterful period antiques, tricky trompe l’oeil tiles, peaceful, unworldly and sometimes plain bonkers.

My three-night stay, with scrumptious food, log-fires, hot-water bottles, a gracious staff and magnificent gardens was not long enough.

Hacienda Cusin has been the perfect end to a South American adventure, starting with a Galapagos cruise and finished being so much more. Long may you reign, Nick. We absolutely loved Hacienda Cusin and will be back.

I stayed for two nights, and wanted more. Granted, there were probably about 12 people staying there while I visited, but given the green space and horizontal layout, even at full capacity you're assured plenty of tranquility.

Imagine falling asleep with embers in one corner of the room and waking up to a window filled with garden space. Imagine walking out of your room and being able to stroll through what seems like part of Madrid's Prado or Paris's Louvre. Imagine staff knowing exactly how you like your eggs or coffee. And imagine a spot where you can meet and talk with guests while inspired by a particular statue, painting, flower or fountain.

I'll confess two regrets: not coming with a special someone and relying on the brakes of the rentable bikes on the premises.

I'm ready to head back for more.

I only spent one night at this beautiful, historic, charming hacienda but I shall return especially to do some bird watching. This Hacienda is closet to Quito and Otovalo. This was a wonderful finish to a Galapagos Islands voyage. The British/American owner takes pride in the history and comfort of Hacienda Cusin. Dinner was excellent and a full breakfast was a fine start to the day.

Room Tip: There is no central heating and it can be cool at night. Make sure the room has working electric hea...

This is a hard review to write. We loved the Otavalo area, and some aspects of this hotel... but overall it was a big disappointment. The night we arrived (in the rain, in the dark, after a 3 hour drive from Mindo), I actually cried when I saw our room. This was advertised as "the most luxurious hacienda in south america".... we booked it as a "treat" on an otherwise fairly rustic itinerary.... and it is NOT that at all. If you think of it as a sort of rustic B&B, a unique opportunity to experience the hardship of life on a real hacienda (which was basically a farm, after all)... a farm home-stay.... then you probably will not be disappointed. And I might even recommend the place to you provided you understood all that. But if you're looking to be pampered with attentive service, cozy bathrobes, an elegant dinner, tea in the garden etc... this is not the place. The rooms are FREEZING, and eventually they come and light a fire for you & put a hot water bottle in your bed - which is great once you are ready to sleep, but does not at all allow for lingering in the rooms before bed (or in the early evening - fires are lit around 8 pm). No bathrobes or slippers. The dining room & lounge area just beside it are beautiful and have fires in the evening, however the "library" which has games, books, TV etc does NOT have the fire lit and is freezing, dark and damp at all hours of the day. The books are actually mouldy (not that there are likely to be any books you would want to read anyway). The courtyard area, office, shops, and rooms all have a very rustic and rather run-down look. There were spiders in our bathroom. To keep the sun out of our room we had to run around the back of the building and put the outside shutters over the window (they did not have people to do this for you in the morning and evening, we had to figure out what to do & how, no one warned us). The location is neither in the country nor in Otavalo - it's a $5 taxi ride anywhere - it's in a tiny village which is sadly even more run down than Cusin and NOT a place you can even find lunch. If you have never stayed in a South American Hacienda and expect "basic" this could be a fun trip - otherwise avoid. Also, there was a last-minute dispute over the bill that was very confusing and not handled in a very pleasant way. Of note, we took a side trip to Hacienda Pinsiqui and found the vibe much more welcoming - more beautiful location on a river in the country, too. Did not see the rooms there but would definitely try that instead next time. Cusin probably OK to come for lunch or dinner (though selection of dinner choices at Pinsiqui was more varied and food was better).

Room Tip: we had a garden cottage which did give more space & privacy, would be nice if weather was warm a...

We spent two nights at Hacienda Cusin to primarily to visit the Otavalo area. The hotel has a car and a driver, that can be hired by the hour and made excellent suggestions of how best to visit the local sites.

Our room in the grounds was basic, rather dark and sparcely furnished, although it did have a seperate living room and covered sitting area outside. As many people have mentioned, the bedroom did have a fireplace and having a last glass of wine in front of the roaring fire before retiring to bed (with hotwater bottles!) was quite memorable.

The service at reception was a bit hit or miss, varying from extremely helpful to somewhat dismissive, which unfortunately lost marks for the hotel in our opinion. The restaurant service however was friendly and efficient. Although both nights, we did have to find a waiter to serve in the bar, which was perhaps understandable as it always seemed empty (although one wonders if that was because of a lack of a barman!). It was worth the wait, as he made excellent cocktails. The food was reasonable and we did try the cuy on the second night, but you have to order it a 24 hours in advance, as I believe thay are bred at the hotel.

We enjoyed the facilities of the Hacienda, having tea (complimentary!) on the terrace of the library overlooking the gardens was particularly nice. The library also has free wifi access. It is also well worth visiting the El Monasterio next door, which seems mainly used for conferences. The Salon Cotacatchi is absolutely exquisite and there is also a secret door leading to one of the towers, which would be fun for children to find (however the stairs/ladders are quite steep).

The horse ride we took from the hotel was excellent and there is a map with several graded walks, which take you quite quickly into the andean countryside. We managed to lose the route on our one walk, although as the walks seemed loop up and down steep sided valleys, it wasn't difficult to get back to the hotel.
