“Horseback riding and rest in the Andes”
Reviewed June 6, 2013

Wife, grandchild and myself enjoyed the low key solicitude of a room with active fireplace, bedtime hot water bottles and vry attentive staff and family management at htis hotel neighboring the Indian villages of Otavlo (active daily market) and the leather center of Compechi. The hotelhas its own stables. Riding in the Andes with guide runs $13 an hour.

Food is only good. Unfortunately, except for breakfast there are no true offerings of Ecuadorian food

Room Tip: Rooms facing El Monasterio are good as there is a lawn in front. Number of people in party may mak...

We selected Hacienda Cusin based on the high ratings on Trip Advisor and were not disappointed!

We stayed in casita #10 for 4 nights in May and had a wonderful time. We arrived around 7:30 and went straight to dinner. When we came back we had a fire going, the space heater was on, and we had hot water bottles waiting for us under the covers. Our room was large and when you were not close to the space heater and fire it was cool in the rest of the room, but as the Hacienda is at 8,000 feet above sea level we were expecting it to be cool at night. The casita is off by itself next to a little pond, so it is very quiet

The grounds and buildings are lovely. We did a self-guided tour of the Hacienda and the Montesario, and found the history of the hacienda to be very interesting.

We used Cusin as a base for exploring the area. The front desk helped us book a guide so we could hike around Cuicocha lake and help us get a taxi to go to the Otavalo market. We also arranged a trip to "mitad del mundo" on our way back to the airport.

We ate all our meals at the Hacienda and the food was varied and the service was great. You can order a "light" meal at both lunch and dinner (soup or salad and sandwich), which worked out great for those days we weren't very hungry.

We did a 2 hour horseback ride up the mountain through a wonderful forest. What spectacular views of Lago San Pedro, and Imbaburra Volcano!

The days were warm but it rained off and on when we were there so if you are planning on outdoor activities I recommend a packable raincoat/pants.

In the afternoons after our excursions, we enjoyed the ambience of the main house, relaxing by the fire with cookies and hot chocolate.

We had a wonderful relaxing time at Hacienda Cusin and highly recommend!

The hacienda set in the hills around Otavalo had lovely grounds with hummingbirds buzzing around every corner. We arrived here as part of a private tour so can not comment on pricing but could definitely tell we were in one of the better establishments in the surrounding area. The haciendas are cool but our room had a space heater to take some of the chill off and the sitting room by the restaurant had a roaring fire going. Meals were good and the overall experience was enjoyable.

The Hacienda is very old as expected, and of course no central heat. The information says a fire will be built in the fireplace and you can request a electric heater .
Unfortunately for me, when I arrived ,even tho with a reservation, no fire had been lit and no heater was available. That room was VERY cold...mind you there was a ton of covers on the bed (They felt like a ton too!!)
The hot water bottles were the best part.. I was here for 3 nights.
They did eventually find an electric heater but every night I had to find someone to light the fire.
Breakfast was included and it was a tasty substantial meal.
A computer was supplied in the office but the charge was 3.00 plus tax of .93 for one hour.
Excessive charge in my opinion.
The city of Otavalo with its market is a rewarding experience tho'..
Their are other Haciendas in the area with better accomodations

Thank you for reviewing Cusin. We are sorry for your disappointments, especially your being cold. I'm unsure at what time you arrived but, unless a guest requests a different time of the day, fires are usually lighted in the evening (sic. room information and website).

Computer equipment, internet and maintenance of them in Ecuador (and the UK) are far more expensive than in the US. Cusin's rates reflect those expenses. Guests can enjoy several access areas for complimentary wi-fi - upgraded to a faster speed last week.

We are so glad that you enjoyed breakfast, heavy blankets and your hot-water bottle! Come back soon!

This is a lovely old hacienda with a real hacienda feel. We selected Suite #10, which sits all by itself on a corner of the expansive grounds and I am so glad we paid the little bit extra for that room. It was so very charming with its wood stove that really made it toasty. It was very roomy and comfortable.
Breakfast (included) was quite nice with a different fresh juice each day. My favorite was blackberry!
Take time to enjoy the grounds, but most certainly take a horseback ride up the mountain. It has been too many decades since I last rode (although my wife is accomplished rider) but it was an amazing 2-hour ride up the mountain, passing through several small villages and a wonderful eucalyptus forest.
Oh, don't expect something new as this hacienda dates back to 1602! There is no tv, but you can rent movies to enjoy in their lovely library. Good WiFi in the library and at the recepcion.

The place is very big a pretty, it has lots of historic artifacts like colonial paintings and decorations everywhere, the rooms are charming with a fire place and overall is a very quite place to rest. The food was very good and we got excellent service. Yes you get charged 10% on all services but that´s pretty much common everywhere in Ecuador. IF you want to go horse back riding you need to be there early, rides are for 1 hour or more and it is worth it since it goes around the volcanoes. The Monastery area was very peacefull, very nice. This is one of the best haciendas in the Country.

With the overwhelming stellar nearly unanimous reviews, my expectations were high and therefore sadly quite disappointed.

Property and grounds are very nice, gorgeous. Quiet, lush, peaceful with views of the Imbabura Volcanoes. Yes loved the fireplace and hot water bottles as well.

Found the service to be without great attention, maybe since they automatically add 10% to your room rate as a TIP! They don't have to try. Found this fixed tip bananas as if you were to spend any more money (dinner, or a coffee for example) another 10% tip would be added. Breakfast stuff very indifferent to us. Really disappointed here since the ALL the previous review glow of the service and staff.

Felt with "nice" "higher quality" hotels a charge shouldn't be made from you at every step. Only a DVD /TV in the common room, so hopefully you want to watch the same movie at the same time as your fellow guests. And to charge $3.50 for a DVD rental? Oh you do get popcorn free as part of the package. And sign on room door says they charge $5.00 to reconfirm your flight reservation?!?!? seriously?!? have NEVER had a hotel want to charge for this. Yes there is free coffee, tea and water in the Library.

Wifi?!? Doesn't work in the library, restaurant, nor in my room, which was a cottage at the end of the property. Had to sit on the patio table right in front of the reception to get wifi that was able to actually work.

Lovely building and grounds. Was couldn't believe this was the hotel that so many people loved. For the reviews and price, I was quite disappointed.

Thank you for your observations, disappointed at times though you were. Any guest's disappointment becomes ours and is always discussed and, whenever possible, rectified.

The Government decried 10% Service Tax ('tip') ensures that ALL staff receive a 'tip', not only the visible staff, and is usual in hotels and restaurants throughout Latin America and most of Europe.

Cusin has four television/DVD viewing areas, including a movie house with a 10' screen and complimentary popcorn. Additionally, a television room with cable-access is available for guests. The vast majority of guests do not want the intrusion of a television program in their room.

There are several, complimentary wi-fi access areas throughout the property. I'm sorry that you were unable to access it.

The '$5 confirmation fee' is a mystery being investigated! There is no such charge.
