“Memorable Christmas at Cusin”
Reviewed January 8, 2013

My husband and I, plus our 20-something daughters, spent 6 days at Hacienda Cusin on our first trip to Ecuador over the Christmas holidays. The place was fabulous and exactly what we were looking for -- a restful haven with enough activities, both at the Hacienda or a short drive away, to keep us active and entertained, as needed. The Hacienda combines the comfort and charm of an English country house with the warmth and hospitality of Latin America. Nick, the owner, was extremely kind and helpful and the staff could not have been more accommodating. The food was very good (we had nearly every meal there). Our family has done a lot of traveling, stayed at a lot of high-end hotels/inns and this ranks up there among the very best. I would strongly recommend it and I won't be surprised if we return!

This was our second time to come to Hacienda Cusin within one year. The first, late last winter, was so totally enchanting that we decided to return to this amazingly beautiful part of Ecuador once again for the holidays. We enjoyed every moment of the special ambiance that this place embodies. Christmas and New Year's eve were in every way a continuation of the magic, grace and charms of this unique place.
We love the eclectic mix of elegance and rustic aspects to the decor with antiques, interesting furnishings and art in both the private and public rooms with fireplaces aglow in the evening. Our walks into the surrounding hills have been filled with discoveries and a photographer's dream.
Last, but not least, the food has been terrific ( and we eat well all over the world). The holiday meals and all of our recent lunches were top rate... i.e., shrimp in a pernod sauce, superb soups, the best home made tree tomato salsa ( be warned! it's addictive) , a strawberry pie "to live for" and home made ice creams delicately flavored with Ecuadorian fruits. Top it all off on the veranda overlooking the gardens with a coffee from the new italian coffee maker and we're in heaven.
If you plan to come at the holidays, we suggest an early booking as things fill up. We met some really interesting folks, a couple of whom we plan to see upon our return to the US.

I had a very good time at Hacienda Cusin. I was there over New Year's and they did a very good job of entertainment and fireworks. Other than it being the holidays, the atmosphere was relaxed and peaceful. The employees are some of the friendliest I've met. The food ranged in a variety of tastes for each meal of the day with lovely restaurant atmospheres. My room was outstanding. The fireplace was key during cold nights. The entire resort has a very homey/cozey feeling to it. I actually got a chance to stay in both Hacienda Cusin and El Monasterio during my stay and I enjoyed both equally. My room in Hacienda Cusin was nice and spacious with a foyer and a sitting room with two full-sized beds and a full-length mirror (much appreciated). My room in El Monasterio was lovely and quite with a slanted ceiling and many windows. The secret passage way in El Monasterio was my favorite thing about the place.

We stayed 3 nights at Hacienda Cusin, in a large family room with 2 connecting bedrooms. We immediately loved the place. When we got there late afternoon, our plan was to go straight to Otavola to have dinner. But the whole family wanted to stay, discover the wonderful and quiet gardens of the hacienda and connected monastery, and enjoy dinner in the stylish dining room that make you feel like going back straight to 17th century. The hacienda has various common rooms for guests, with fireplaces, that make you feel extremely good. For example, there is a library with complimentary tee, lots of books to borrow. Although our room did not, most rooms have their own fireplace, and wood available at the doorstep. This is pretty unique in a hotel!
Breakfast was also a unique experience. Unlike in most hotels, breakfast was served by waiters, and quantities was pretty large. For example, we had every morning musli with yogurt, pancakes, coffee, fresh fruit juice, and bread.
Another charming detail : since the weather was relatively cold in the evening and at night, staff was putting hot water pouches in the beds every evening, so that bedding would be warm at night. Pretty cool!
In short, we had a memorable experience at Hacienda Cusin, it was an extremely relaxing place, from where we could enjoy the treasures of the Otavalo region, starting with the very nice Condor park, where the show is worth the trip.

Cusin has a beautiful property (even a secret passage way!) and helpful staff. Main complaint is that the rooms are very cold and hot water was lacking. The staff did try and accommodate for this by leaving hot water bottles in our bed, which was lovely but very needed. Maybe a better bet in summer. Restaurant was decent.

I recently had the opportunity of staying at 3 different haciendas in the highlands of Ecuador on the west slope of the Andes, NE of Quito.

In chronological order, I stayed at Haciendas Zuleta, Cusin and Pinsaqui. In order of my preference for each, I rank Zuleta as the clear number 1, Pinsaqui as number 2 and Cusin as distant number 3. They are all very different. I will review each, with this review being of Cusin.

I only spent one night here. First of all, let me say that the gardens at Cusin are very, very nice and well tended. But this is where my praise stops. Clearly I had a different experience than most reviewers here, but then I had also just come from Zuleta, which is like comparing a room at a Ritz to a room at a Motel 6. Come to think of it, I have had more comfortable rooms at a Motel 6.

Check in was chaotic and my upstairs room, #5, was a huge disappointment. It was small and dark, the living/sleeping area being lighted by only 2 small, low watt wall lamps next to the beds. The sitting area contained a small couch (probably a hide-a-bed, but I didn't verify this) opposite the 2 single beds, but that side of the room was so dark as to make sitting there useless to me.

The room did not contain a fireplace but did contain a portable electric heater which did an adequate job in the living/sleeping area, but did not do much, if anything at all, to heat the small bathroom off the living/sleeping area.

Speaking of the bathroom, it contained only a small shower stall (no tub) with a very poor shower head. I say poor because it did not put out a decent uniform spray but rather the spray went in several strange directions, most likely because the shower head was clogged. There was no wash cloth in my bath room and presumably Cusin doesn't furnish them. I didn't bother to ask as I was only here for one night. The provided soap consisted only of very small bars. The bathroom amenities seemed cheap to me.

Staying only the one night, I only took two showers here, but both were challenging, to say the least, with no wash cloth, small soap bars, a cold bathroom, a small shower stall, and the shower spray going in several directions other than on me.

I also found the public areas - bar, dining and sitting areas - to be dark and uninviting.

I had one dinner and one breakfast here and both, while adequate, were nothing remarkable.

I fully expect the owner to attack my negative review as he has done to other less than positive reviewers here, which seems to be his style; however, take a look at my reviews and you will see the vast majority are positive with ratings of average or higher. Indeed, only 6 out of 93 reviews have been 2 stars (poor) before this and more than half (49) have been 4 or 5 star (very good to excellent).

All in all, I was really glad I only had one night scheduled here and was happy to leave. I would not stay here again and cannot recommend it to my friends. There are better alternatives in the area.

Hacienda Cusin is a very enchanting adventure, from the old world art and tapestries grand dining and fairy tale grounds you can live the best life has to offer. Our time at Cusin was filled with wonderful food, garden walks and a gracious staff. All the interiors are adorned with great works of art and beautifully made wood work and furnishings. Comfort is the word of the day and night. Great food, hospitality, wonderful gardens all add up to one of the best places in all of Ecuador.
