Owner description: This colorful Indian market takes place each Saturday and features some of the finest woven products in the region including ponchos, sweaters, wall hangings and shawls.

We spent a week in Otavalo and loved every moment of our time there. The Saturday Market was amazing. There were typical alpaca blankets, sweaters and ponchos but there were also some very good hand made crafts by locals that were wonderful, especially the wooden carved bowls. These folks work very hard for a living and walk for miles from the surrounding villages to sell their goods. If you go be sure to take in the produce market as well...very interesting and cheap!!! I recommend staying in Otavalo rather than trying to visit the market as a day trip from Quito as the best time to be there is early in the morning. Stay at La Posada del Quinde.....the best place to stay near the market and a very good rate. It also has one of the best restaurants in town. Can't wait to return!!! We are going back to Ecuador in February.

The Otavalo Market is a popular day trip from Quito. The market itself is colorful and very busy, especially Saturday, the day we went. If you are looking for souvenirs, or fabrics, t-shirts, or small toys, this is the place to be. If you are looking for higher grade merchandise, such as alpaca sweaters or leather goods, the selection is not very good. I found the the number goods that I would really want to wear back home limited despite all the stalls. Again, I think it is expectations versus reality. However, Otavalo due to traffic is a two hour trip one way from Quito, so you should know what you are getting before you go.

Our last day in Quito, Ecuador was arranged by lastminutegalapagosdeals.com we traveled through surrounding villages and of course Otavalo market. A great finsh to a great trip and a special shout out to our guide Milton, who made certain all people were taken care of on this once in a lifetime adventure.

For people that like Idyllwild, California you will definitely enjoy Otavalo as a town. The bus route from Quito to Otavalo is gorgeous, and it IS safe! Just use your conscious and seat instead of stand in the bus. Well, in the terminal the busses come so often that you can hop on the next empty bus in less than 5 min, so there is really no reason to get on a full bus. Actually as soon as all the seats get taken the bus leaves and the next one comes. Very Nice! The bus helpers ( that collect the money) ARE on top of it! They are very smart and sharp people. So you can trust them.

The town is very hip and nice. I saw more cool stores in Otavalo than in Quito! I heard Otavalian ( if they are called that!) are successful businessmen. You can see that by just walking in town! Very clean, and hip. I barely saw anywhere that was dirty or smelled like urine.

It is obvious they care about their town. On Sat, right when the market closes the town is very dirty, but maybe for only half hour. Immediately huge trash trucks come and swipe the whole town! Soon you wouldn't even notice there was a market there!

If I knew more about this town I would have planned to stay there for 3-4 days. Everyone just comes for the market, but you can do so much more; recreation-wise.

For people that want to watch animal trade (market) you can visit them before going to the famous "Otavalo market". it is about 10 min away from the "Otavalo market".

Very Strongly Recommend this Place.

The market was huge and very cool to walk around in. We mostly looked but we did purchase a few things too. Don't be afraid to haggle a big.. but honestly the prices are so low to begin with we didn't bother too much.
Don't expect to find one of a kind good here. They are cheaply made and a dime a dozen, but its still fun and you can't go wrong with multi-coloured alpaca socks.
