I visited here on market day...Saturday. Takes about 2 hours from Quito. It is an indigenous town and the market is huge. Great buys particularly for jewellry, textiles and leather work. You must bargain. I do not speak Spanish, but was able to make myself understood...just be patient, as the vendors are very accommodating. One tip.........if you like something..get it, as this was the best valued market I visited between Ecuador, Peru and Argentina. If you love markets, a trip here is very rewarding!!!

The sights! The sounds! The food! The trek from Quito was L O N G but scenic and well worth it as this was our first stop on an adventure packed day outside the city. We walked and shopped, sampled some fresh juices and ate some GMO- free corn. Yum. The sun was shining and the weather was sweet. Perfect day indeed.

The market fills the main square in Otovalo everyday from around 9 - 5, depending on weather. The vendors have touristic items like weavings, painted gourds, jewelry, bags, kids clothes, alpaca clothing and rugs. The vendors are nice and most speak a little english, but knowing spanish is very helpful. Bargaining is a must and you can get things for about 30 - 50% off the asking price. The market for the locals is off a side street from the main church and you can get the woolen skirts, cotton embroidered blouses, shoes and woven belts that the local women wear.

Took a day trip here from Quito on a Saturday, It was a bit of a drive and I'd definitely recommend staying for a few days rather than doing a day trip. The market itself was huge with colourful handicrafts at the best prices and lots of food.

What a wonderful experience. We were here on a Saturday and there was so much to see! Everything from embroidery, woven goods, painting, silver work and fruits and vegetables. Local food was also being prepared. The vendors were so nice, it was hard to say no! Most of the time I went 20% below what they were asking and they accepted the price. Our Spanish is VERY limited, and we were lucky to have a guide with us to help with the conversation. We purchased small paintings, alpaca and sheep's wool throws and knitted hats for the kids. I don't think we spent more than $60 for everything. What we purchased was of a great quality - and a wonderful value. Enjoy the experience and take your time.
