“Good service, basic rooms”
Reviewed August 25, 2012

We stayed for one night in Otavalo following a visit to the famous market. Despite the town reputedly being very safe, we did not feel very secure in this room as there was no real security. There was no where to store passports and the doors of the rooms could easily be penetrated. The owners were very friendly and knocked up a basic but tasty breakfast for us well before the other residents were up.

Hello,

A group of 7 of us stayed here during July 2011, three couples and a single.

Positives:

o The rate at 21.85 dollars per person is good. But for a couple you pay double so that is starting to be a little pricey for a basic hotel.
o It is only a 10 minute walk to the Plaza de Ponchos and not terribly far from the animal market.
o There is a nice "courtyard" at the centre - in the rooms ceilings very high which is a positive change from our own flat! So, the place certainly has character.
o There was hot water to have a shower.
o If you have a car there is a place to park it almost directly infront of the hotel in a parkiing lot with guard.
o Staff were friendly.

Neutral:
o Cleanliness was OK.
o Breakfast was OK too.
o Rooms on the ground floor face the "courtyard" so you can hear people walking by.

Negatives:

o The rooms on the ground floor were dark nd basic (although they did have local TV). Considering we had booked several months in advance we were not so pleased with these as the 1st floor (or 2nd floor in Ecuador/USA speak) rooms seem better.
o Don't expect to receive an answer to internet queries; better to phone them up.
o Getting into the hotel at 11pm took about 10 minutes but in the end they heard the bell!

Overall if I were single I would use this hotel again, but as a couple then I think I would look around a bit.

Peace,

Jonathan

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms seem quite dark. The one first floor room that we saw looked better.

Nice and quiet colourfull hotel around big courtyard close to the center and the market. It is not a deluxe hotel but clean, embroidered towels and indian bedspreads. The beds are reasonable as was the bathroom, but the shower was nice and warm. The hotel people were friendly. Our passports were kept in a locker at the hoteldesk.
In the morning we got up at 5.30 to go to the Otavalo saturday animal market: great and at this hour only indigenous people and of course, all sorts of animals. Most other tourists didn't show until 7 or 8. We had our breakfast at 8 with scrambled eggs and coffee and freshly bought strawberries!

The stay here was OK. The courtyard is ambient but the rooms are very basic and cold. Staff and breakfast were satisfactory. What was disappointing was trying to make a reservation online - it didn't work, as no one returned any emails or reservation requests; maybe this explains why the hotel was almost completely empty.

Hotel Otavalo is the best option and the best value for money in Otavalo. Before we stayed overnight in Otavalo, my husband and me went there for day trip from Quito to visit famous market and at the same time we wanted to check out hotel rooms for our future couple of days stay, so went from one hotel to another and have visited most of hotels recommended in lonely planet and frommer guide books including famous Ali Shungu. All of them were not even close to be as nice as rooms in Hotel Otavalo. A whole hotel is beautiful, old colonial house converted into the hotel. It has a charming restaurant in the courtyard and it really has an unique charm. Rooms are spacious, nicely and tastefully decorated. Simply it was pleasure being there and having feel of the past times. Staff is very nice, location is great and price is much better then the other hotels and includes breakfast too. In one word excellent choice

A pity that the rooms do not really match the beauty of the facade and the patio, but at this price you can not expect too much more. Excellent service. Ask for a room with outside window.

I took my niece to Otavalo in July and we had a great time! We stayed at Hotel Otavalo and I was actually quite impressed with the charming, colonial architecture, as well as the location and the hotel staff. They were sweet and kind, which always makes a stay better, though I must prewarn, I 'm not sure they speak English and it's a cash only place as many are in Otavalo. The negatives: Many tours use this hotel, so it seems to be all or nothing (empty or full), hot water is not reliable, and it can get a bit noisy due to the fact that the rooms are all open to the open courtyard in the middle where breakfast takes place every morning, and people sometimes socialize there at night too. Positives: Great location, charming (20 ft+ ceilings in the rooms), nice bathrooms, friendly staff, free internet, good for price (30 for double including bfast)
