“Clean and comfortable”
Reviewed July 11, 2013 via mobile

We didn't have a reservation in Otavalo and this was the first lodging we got to from the bus station. We were lucky! This place has a good location a few blocks away from the Saturday market. It's clean and quiet. We had a room with its own bathroom, though many of the rooms shar the bathroom at the end of the hall. Breakfast is good, in a sunny breakfast room and made to order. We also found the strength of the wifi signal to be better than many other places we stayed in Ecuador and Peru.

We stayed 3 nights here in a triple room. The hostel is really pretty with an inner sunny courtyard, a restaurant area, rooftop patio and a common TV room. While we were there they were renovating the rooftop to make the restaurant up there. It was a 5 minute walk to the market and the bus station so location was perfect. Our room was pretty with lots of natural light and nice details like hand painting on the wall and other paintings and handcrafted items that are common in this area. I noticed that other rooms also had beautiful murals painted on the walls and the whole hostel was full of beautiful locally made art. The wifi was great in the rooms but not in the restaurant and the water was nice and hot in the showers. The bathroom was also nice and roomy. The breakfast was great with choices between yoghurt and fruits and eggs, bread and butter and coffee. All the staff were really helpful and friendly and the owners were an American Ecuadorean couple that were incredibly helpful when we needed help and advice planning some day trips in the area such as Cuycocha Lake and Fuya Fuya. I would definitely come back here!

This is a lovely little place and we stayed here for 3 nights. We paid $30 a night including breakfast for 2 people. The room was nice, lots of warm blankets and plenty of hot water, which is important in Otavalo.

The location is great and quiet, right in town, just a 5 minute walk from everything.

The price of the room includes breakfast of coffee/tea, eggs and bread in their little cafe out the front. The wifi was somewhat intermittent but when it worked it was fine.

If you are looking for a cheaper place try Hostal Sucre on Calle (something something) Sucre. Right in the centre of town it is brand new and was $24 a night, although as we stayed a week it was only $18 a night (no breakfast).

There is another hostal with Sucre in the name as well but I have no idea what that is like. So make sure you get the one with the blue sign on busy Sucre Street with all the shops.

Back to Hostal Ricon del Viajero and we would recommend staying there if you are looking for a nice place and are happy to pay $30 a night!

Room Tip: We were in room 3 and it was fine.

I have stayed here many times and I highly recommend this Bed and breakfast.

From the moment you enter not only do the beautiful flower gardens and painted murals greet you but
the staff make you feel welcome and are wonderfully kind and extremely helpful. I enjoy the peace,
tranquility and safety this Bed and Breakfast provides.

The English speaking owners take pride in their Bed and Breakfast and have created a garden terrace
with hammocks where you can relax, read a book and enjoy the scenery.

You have a choice of three different breakfasts every morning and the coffee is wonderful!

What I particularly like is the fireplace room where you can enjoy a fire
every night and share the company of fellow travellers.

The wifi is reliable and laundry service is available and, as well baggage storage.

Rincon de Viajero is a wonderful place to meet new friends and one
of the friendliest places to stay in Otavalo and explore the surrounding towns and villages.

Highly Recommend

Only two blocks from Plazo de Ponchos, this hostel is a good option in Otavalo. It is an easy walk from the bus station or if you get dropped on the highway (many buses do this) flag down a taxi and it should cost around $1.50. Just make sure that you let the taxi driver know you want the hostel close to the centre as our driver took us to the camping part of the hostel which is out of town. We paid $11.50 per person do a private room with shared bathroom although prices will increase by about a dollar as of 1 May 2013. Price includes a basic breakfast. Room was clean, spacious and quiet. Shower was very hot and had good pressure. The staff were really friendly. The old man who owns the hostal was really helpful and good for laugh if you know a bit of Spanish. Would definitely stay here again.

This place has just about everything you need. Friendly staff, breakfast is included, a rooftop terrace with a pool table and hammocks, a communal fireplace, laundry service, etc., etc. The rooms are quite basic, but clean. The only issue with our room was that we heard dogs barking non-stop throughout the night from the adjacent building. This hostel is in a very convenient part of the city and it's very affordable.

The family that runs this small hotel makes you feel right at home. They are very helpful in providing ideas of things to do that are off-the-beaten path a bit and run a very laid back place.

The rooms are simple, but clean and there is a nice roof deck where you can relax. If you spend a lot of time in your hotel room, this may not be the place for you, but for someone looking for a good, basic value hotel in a central location this is a great pick.
