“Excellent Transition Hotel”
Reviewed March 25, 2012

Whether going to the Galapagos or inner Ecuador, this hotel is an excellent choice. It is clean, well appointed and has excellent service from the front desk to the bell men to the service staff in the restaurant. We have used this hotel for both coming back to Ecuador after a long series of flights in North America and for returning to our NA home after our Ecuadorian holiday.

The Grand may be a little tired in some rooms but this is being updated. The restaurant looks out onto a lovely pool area which has a beautiful, large, handcrafted mosaic iguana looking over the area and the fourth wall of this area has a stunning display of bromeliads, orchids and vines that are climbing the Cathedral wall that happens to be in the Hotel's backyard.

Our room was in the back, clean, cool and comfortable. The shower was hot and strong, and the addition of two bottles of water was a very pleasant surprise.

This is an excellent choice of hotel to relax between legs of a trip especially if you are going to the mountains where adapting to the altitude will require rest first.

Room Tip: Breakfast is buffet style and excellent. Ask for a room in the inner courtyard to avoid street no...

Walking up the stairs to your room you overlook a really nice pool area with a giant iguana statue. The staff were very friendly. The rooms were large and of a very good standard. Staff were very friendly & helpful. We got free welcome cocktails in the bar, these were tiny and the live music in the bar was not our to our liking. No complaints, but nothing really special either.

Just returned from guayaquil. The hotel was nothing out of the ordinary. The rooms were clean, the food was good. The furnished and decor were rather dismal and needs uplifting. Dark green paint does nothing for me. Remininescent of something from the sixties. The air conditioning is noisy and not very effective. The cool air would be retained longer with double glazing fitted in the windows, which would also keep out the noise and the constant hooting from the vehicles and the other street sounds. They would not accept travellers cheques.

Guayaquil holds no attraction for me. Yes the Malecon is well cared for, shame they don't look over to the side of the river and clear up all the rubbish there. There are security guards everywhere. How www.galapagosislands.com can descibe the city as beautiful is beyond me. A concrete jungle - I pity the animals in the very small and congested park to the rear of the hotel right amongst the traffic fumes. The botanic gardens was good but not the animal and parrot husbandry - some of the parrots were in tiny cages unable to spread their wings and some had lost their feathers (as had some of the chickens) due perhaps to mites or boredom. The deer had no cover and were situated next to the play area and were clearly traumatised.

Make sure you check your change from street sellers - there are still illegal Equadorian coins in circulation.

The hotel was our rest stop on our way back to Cuenca from touring the costal areas from Salinas to Puerto Lopez. Located in the center of town, a few blocks from the beautiful "Malecon" the hotel is all you would expect it to be for the price. Comfortable king size bed and all the amenities. The restaurants were extremely high priced as could be expected for a luxury hotel.

My wife and I stop in Guayaquil every year now on our way to Argentina.
I discovered this hotel several years ago on a business trip...thought it somewhat outdated but began to really like the charm of the place. It's like stepping back int to the 1950s... in a positive way!
There are renovations under way right now (pool completely redone and room updates) but the features that I really liked are still there... friendly staff, a really good restaurant and the overall atmosphere.
They offer a free shuttle to and from the airport; the Cathedral and park are just behind the hotel (with lots of iguanas)! There are bakeries, restaurants and shops nearby also and within about 5 blocks you can be at the river's edge and walk the restored Malecon. Many of the government buildings are interesting to view and the people are friendly and welcoming.
All in all, this hotel always makes our 'stopover' stay in Guayaquil a pleasant one!

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the street; one from which you can see the pool but up on a higher floor.

Nice hotel, good location, good service. But, DO NOT give them a credit card! Someone at this hotel took my card details, that I provided on check in to secure incidental expenses, and fraudulent charges started within 24 hours. Arrange this hotel with travel agent payment or cash only, DO NOT give them a credit card for any reason at all.

"Our guest comments are very important to us, but, how should we give credit or investigate this serious report, if we have not been notified directly at the right time by the guest.

Our Credit Card procedures are 100% safe, and have proven to be safe for the 35 years that the hotel is open.

The lack of proper information does not allow us to verify if the credit card was used just in the hotel, or if it was used before elsewhere, in the city or the country, where it might really have been misused.

Our guests can be assured that we take seriously, and, that we care about all the comments we receive. We'd like to help, so we kindly ask all our clients to feel free to let us know any observation."

The hotel was safe and convenient to the Parque de los Iguanas and a lovely large church, but the room wasn't anything special and the price was rather high.
