“My favorite place to stay in GYE”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 30, 2013

I arrived from Bogotá at 1 am. I was glad to have made arrangement to be picked up. It is my second time at the hostal, and the service is excellent. The breakfast was simple but delicious (and free). Fermin welcomed me, showed me the room, started the A/C. The staff is wonderful and very accommodating.

The room are clean, nice and comfortable. If you like flat pillow, make sure to bring your own.

For my family and I, Murali is the place to stay overnight.

We stayed in Hostel Murali for one night, we chose this hostel as we were arriving in Guayaquil Airport in the early evening and we had an early bus to catch the next morning, Murali is close to both the bus station and airport so it suited us

The hostel itself is good, rooms were spacious and clean, the staff were all very helpful and friendly, the area isn’t the best and I wouldn’t fancy walking about there at night, I also organised an airport transfer through the hotel, despite emailing the hostel the night before we flew to Guayaquil to re-confirm it was booked nobody turned up at the airport to pick us up, they did get back to me when I emailed them the night before we flew as well saying someone would be there to meet us, it wasn’t a big problem for us just a bit annoying

Breakfast was provided in the hotel and was fine, toast, scrambled eggs and coffee

I was recommended Murali by a good friend of mine who had stayed there before and so I made a reservation through booking.com and received an email of confirmation by the hotel. When we arrived at Guayaquil we got a taxi and arrived at Murali's. We told them we had a reservation but they said they were full and unceremoniously told us to look for another place to stay at. After a full day of travel being treated like this without even a recommendation to another place was just bad.
Last word: Unreliable.

This is a no frills hostel at a no frills price. We were met at the airport by a driver arrranged through the hostel and it took about five minutes to get to Murali. It was about 11pm and we were quickly ushered to our room which was air-conditioned and had a good bathroom. Breakfast was served in the dining room and included scrambled eggs and toast. Our Spanish is limited and their English is limited but using google translate we were able to arrange transport to the Guayaquil waterfront which is well worth a visit. The next day the hostel arranged a vehicle to pick us up and take us to Cuenca. Overall we were very pleased with the way Murali Hostel looked after us.

Room Tip: Bring your ear plugs. I suspect Guayaquil is a noisy place regardless of where you stay.

Got hotel confirmation from Steve Alvarado, the General Manager on Monday, February 11, 2013 at 10:32PM for the nights of May 16th and 17th 2013 but when I showed up at their door on the night of May 16th I was treated as if a criminal trying to invade an exclusive resort.

According to the night manager Steve was out of town (Loja I believe, which must be a galaxy away) and the prior owner, Domenick Buonamici as prior owner of this Hostal would evidently have no valid input since he no longer had an affiliation with Hostal Murali.

A call was made to someone and they offered no solution or admission that someone in their organization may have made an error by losing or misplacing my reservation.

After finishing talking with him another call was made, at my request, to someone I knew in Guayaquil for translation assistance if nothing else, but that call reverted to voicemail only.

Because at least two calls were made on my behalf, I gave them a rating of one balloon because there was nothing to indicate one quarter on one balloon.

The night manager's response, in my mind, was essentially a shrug of the shoulders and..."You're on your own bud."

After 25 years of customer service experience in the airline industry (most of which was in management) I found maybe 5% of the travel industry should not have been in that particular field at all. I would now include the Hostal Murali among that select group.

I am positive there are many who have had positive experiences at Hostal Murali, since the new owner thought it was a worthwhile purchase and wouldn't have invested in the purchase if he/she thought otherwise.

Best of luck to those who do not read current reviews.

Room Tip: Best of luck.

We had a 12 hour layover overnight in Guayaquil on our way home, and decided to get a hotel. Contacted the hotel from the kiosk in the baggage claim at the airport, Very friendly and helpful. They sent over a van for us right away. Clean rooms, and an air-conditioner which is one of the coldest I have ever encounter. (We had just spent a week in the rain forest so the cold air was welcome.) Can't rate the breakfast (included in room cost) as we had a 7am flight and left before it was served. If I had to overnight in Guayaquil again I would stay here.

Hostal Murali told us a driver would meet us at the airport and would charge us $15. for the trip to the Hostal. The driver (Jorge) was waiting for us but charged us $30. This is a 3 to 5 minute ride which a taxi would charge $3 to $5 for. Upon arriving at hotel he tipped the night hotel manager $5 and told us that he lived down the street. There was no hot water, the toilet backed up and took several request to have it unclogged, the air conditioner was not adjustable (either a gale force cold wind or nothing) the ceiling fan girated, squeaked and moaned and was covered in dust and mold. There was no drinking water in the room even though there was a small fridge. At the desk they sold me a 10 ounce bottle of water for $1 even though I bought the same brand and size the next day at a store 20 meters away for .35 cents. The included breakfast was plain scrambled eggs (I was never asked how I wanted them prepared), white bread toast (no other option offered) and a small glass of juice (no water offered). The neighborhood felt very unsafe. The store next door where I bought the water would not let shoppers inside, customers would stand outside a steel bar gated door and would ask for what they wanted and exchanged money and goods through a 12"X 12" opening through the bars. We planned on staying 2 nights and paid for them upon arrival, but after our experience, we decided to leave in the morning. We paid in cash and asked for a refund of the second night. We were refused a refund but were offered a 25% discount on our next stay.

Room Tip: The price for this hostal is moderately high $55 plus tax but the quality is very low.
