Even getting lost is romantic in Rovinj. The town is maybe more beautiful than Venice. Worth the detour to go there !

The old town of Rovinj is one of the oldest towns on the west coast of Istra. It is full of visitors in summer, empty in winter. A lot of shops, bars and artists, close to everything, including a bus station, museums, port, etc.

Compared to other spots that offer this level of old world quaintness, I felt that the old town in Rovinj was a notch above. Sure, there are "atteliers" and "cafe x or z" catering to tourists, but the density of these is limited in comparison to other equivalent touristy towns. In their place, are legit residents and businesses catering to locals and quiet side streets/alley ways that offer a very old world fee. I loved it.

I came to Rovinj on bus from Porec as a day-trip in September. From other people's comments, I knew about the cobbled stone streets in the old town, but did not expect them to be quite so narrow, uneven, and slippery. A lot of uphill and downhill twisted lanes. With my bad knees, I could not have walked around the old town without my walking stick. I would recommend footwear with good traction too, especially on rainy days. There is a small supermarket by the bus station, and a small outdoor market in the old town with a dozen or so vendors selling fruits, vegetable, and local delicacies. The town is definitely pretty enough to warrant a day trip from Pula and Porec. Definitely worth the hike up to the hill top to see the church and the beautiful view.
