As a family of three we stayed here during the last week of May. It was our first visit to Croatia and it could not have been better. The setting of the hotel is glorious and the short boat trip to the island from lovely Rovinj adds something special to the holiday. The hotel itself was very pleasant. It is clean and staffed by polite and professional staff. Valentina in the pool bar was particarly good. We enjoyed the buffet food although started going a bit later than opening time in the evening to avoid the busiest time. The two clay tennis courts are kept in very good condition (by the tennis coach Mackie - phonetically) and cost about £9ph. The weather was super and in the low twenties and warming up nicely. The pool was a little cold but very nice and there is an indoor alternative. The hotel was popular with healthy looking over fifties and a few families which suited us fine but might not appeal so much to a young couple. However there are lots of places to go in Rovinj and the ferry travels back and forth every hour until the early hours. Again everyone was very nice in Rovinj and we were struck by how easy everything was. After this we are Croatia converts and will holiday there again in the near future.

Excellent hotel. The staff were great (See exception below) The breakfasts were excellent. The island was beautiful. Boat service was good but check which boat you get on as they change in morning and evening and you may end up at the wrong Island! Rooms were great and A/C quiet. However we visited the Lanterna restaurant and got the worse service ever. Had to ask for meals to be produced - spent 3 hours in the restaurant, most of them waiting. It wasn't just us as we heard of other people who suffered the same delays. WiFi is now free in the reception area.

Room Tip: Rooms on north side are quiter but a quiet A/C system meant we had no problems with closing windows. View on south side is well worth it!

Dear PeteJFraser,

Thank you so much for choosing to stay at hotel Istra and for sharing your review here at Tripadvisor. Great to hear that your stay was brilliant and that all the services and facilities were up to your expectations. It is with regret though that I read about your disappointment in Lanterna Restaurant and you can rest assured that your comment was noted and passed on to our Food and Beverage team so that experiences such as yours are avoided in future.
Thank you once again for such a great rating; we hope your travels will bring you back to hotel Istra soon again.

Lovely hotel , I was there last year in my honeymoon i it was perfect...all ..the food very fresh and tasty, the island, the spa, the gym, the tennis court...everything. I will go back anytime.
I think that the only think that i didn't like was that the WI-FI wasn't free.

Dear iulian c,

Thank you for taking the time to share your impressions about hotel Istra following your stay in August last year. We are always very flattered when honeymooners choose our hotel for such an important moment of their lives and really try to do our best in creating a memorable experience for them. It is so nice to receive a confirmation from one of our honeymooners that we have succeeded in this mission. Looks like the only thing that you pointed out as a possible negative side is extra charge for Wi-Fi which as of this year is included in the accommodation price. I hope this comes as a good reason to return for another great stay.

You can always over think the reviews on here and not choose to go to certain places because someone put a bad one on!
This hotel was fabulous, we had a room overlooking the pool and other island including sea. It was for 3 people but it was a bit squashed. Without the third person, the room is spacious! Its very modern, white and bright. There is plenty of wardrobe space and a safe and mini fridge if you choose! I would stay in the same room again! I feel if you overlooked the front of the hotel, you may risk being blocked by the trees! The bathroom once again was good and no complaints in the room area!
The pool was a tad cold but warmed up over the week and there was also a child pool and a sea water pool! There is plenty of sun loungers and parasols, so you don't have to worry about getting up at 6am to get a sun lounger! There is also a park with zip wire and swings! Plus water sports and scuba diving! There is plenty to do! Plus many restaurants and bars around the island, so you don't have to go off at night if you don't want to!
The hotel itself is on an island about a 10 minute ride from rovinj! It is a lovely relaxing journey but you may have to stand on the busier trips (6/7/8pm). I could write a review for pages about everything in this hotel!
I could not give you any bad comments as we had a lovely time, so much were going back this year! PLEASE DONT LISTEN TO THE BAD REVIEWS...NOT TRUE!!!

Room Tip: Higher floors have better views. Go for a sea view/over the pool!

I have always avoided package holidays usually because so many hotels (however beautiful) feel like holiday camps and there is too much forced entertainment. This year we wanted something easy though so we did book a package at the Hotel Istra and I was very pleasantly surprised.

The location of the hotel (both Rovinj and the island) was gorgeous. Very like the best of Italy. The hotel was smart and exceptionally clean. The restaurant was a bit canteeny but that was because most people seemed to be on the half board option. The food was fine though and the staff where excellent at clearing away dirty crockery and keeping the tables clean which can be a problem in these buffet style restaurants. There were another couple of restaurants which were good although these were extra so to be honest we preferred to go into Rovinj for a meal on the occasions we wanted a break from the hotel.
Rovinj was very pretty and we ate at a number of restaurants, all were excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful.
Some people who had stayed at the hotel before were complaining that some of the facilities weren't open at the end of May but as we had never experienced them, there was nothing to miss! Personally the fact that it wasn't their peak season so there was no rush for sunbeads etc was a bonus!

There were 4 outdoor pools and also a lovely indoor pool and jacuzzi in the spa which I was surprised was open to all, even children so meant we could have a chill out even when it started to get cooler in the evening.

For the brave the swimming in the sea was easy (if cold) and there were lots of points were there were steps into the crystal sea. On a few days there were quite a few jellyfish though.

There were activities to do if you wanted - our son particularly enjoyed the archery and shooting which was just for an hour and you just turned up if you fancied a go. Very low key and Igor was brilliant - friendly but not 'in your face'.
The boat trip across made for a little adventure every time and they were every hour from early morning to midnight so didn't cramp your style.
There were lots of boat trips from Rovinj which were reasonable although with a child who gets seasick we didn't risk one this year.

Overall, it is a lovely hotel in a great place and suited for couples, and families.

Room Tip: All rooms seemed to have a sea view.

Dear Alison C,

We would like to sincerely thank you for writing such a nice and detailed review of hotel Istra and for giving us such a high rating. Seeing that overall you had a great stay with us and that whole of your family managed to enjoy and try most of the services fills us with joy. It seems that you have picked the right period to visit our island if you like more intimacy and less fuss around the pool. Pity you didn’t try our Lanterna restaurant for a less „canteeny“ meal but I guess it is always a good reason to come and visit us again.
Thank you once again for being our guest; we hope to welcome you soon again.
