Booked on a lady minute whim, the tripadviser reviews did it for me. Every aspect of the holiday was professionally delivered, we honestly had no complaints, save that the bars stopped serving at midnight. The Croatians are great hosts, we will return.

This is a lovely hotel located on an island reached by a free ferry which takes about 15-20 minutes. Plenty of sun beds and umbrellas. It's connected to another island which is a nature reserve. The food was varied and well cooked but could have been hotter. A plus was that you could help yourself to free alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks with your evening meal. My husband, who loves his desserts was a bit disappointed with the selection. Drinks and snacks around the complex were reasonably priced. The Thomson rep was local, he was very likeable and knowledgable about the hotel and region, and was always available in the hotel. Overall we had a lovely holiday and would recommend this hotel. Rovinj is worth a visit, it is medieval with a church on the top of
the hill.

Room Tip: Most rooms had a sea view but do check as a few don't.

We have just returned from a week at the Hotel Istra. Overall it met and, in some respects, exceeded our expectations. As many have said, it does have an unattractive, vaguely ‘Cold War’ exterior that is crying out for a lick of white paint. I’ve also seen reviews that suggest its interior is in need of refurbishment. I’m not convinced about that. The public areas are clean and bright enough. Of course it is blessed with being on an island with wonderful views in all directions.
Our room was of a decent size, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom well up to scratch. We’d asked (and paid) for a balcony and sea view. It appears that a balcony is standard with all rooms. We were slightly disappointed that our second floor room had as much ‘tree’ as ‘sea’ in the view. My advice would be to go for a third floor room if you can as that should guarantee an uninterrupted view. The other question is based around the fact that the hotel is on an island and so has rooms facing in all directions. Our side of the hotel didn’t get any sun until late evening but it was the also the quieter side i.e. not overlooking the pool. It was also cooler and faced towards Rovinj. The other side of the hotel faces Maskin Island and the small harbour. On balance I would say the best views would be on the northern side we were on and facing towards land. For all that we spent little time on the balcony anyway. The chairs provided are plastic and not very inviting – and the balcony has a solid wall so you end up peering over the top. A couple of other niggles would be that it’s possible to hear both people moving around in the room above ( we suffered from a child running to and fro) and that the air conditioning is set too high at 27.2C. It’s not possible to control this from the room so we had to ask reception to turn it down.
The food is good in terms of both variety and quality. We always found something to our liking. It is self-service and some of the dishes were not as hot as they could have been. However, the staff are really very attentive and helpful. On one evening we ate very late having returned from a trip and the selection was still excellent whereas we’ve stayed in hotels before where the choice narrows as the evening wears on. We were there during peak season and on one evening the restaurant was very crowded and it was our least pleasant experience. The free wine, beer and soft drinks are welcome of course.
We didn’t use the pool area because there was the usual difficulty of procuring a sunbed and parasol before they were all taken. There were other sunbeds in a lawned area but for some reason no parasols were provided. We preferred to spend our ‘lazy time’ on the shingly beach where we paid 80 Kuna for 2 sunbeds and a parasol.
Finally, you can forget any concerns about the boat to Rovinj. The service was very punctual and, whilst sometimes a little crowded, was never uncomfortably so. Indeed we came to enjoy the trips, particularly those we took in the late evening.
All in all this is a really nice hotel and we would happily recommend it to other people.

Room Tip: Go for the thrid floor on the side facing Rovinj and the coast

The photos do not do the hotel justice. Amazing location, fantastic scenery, great food, brilliant staff... I travelled with my parents and young daughter and was more than pleasantly surprised by the hotel and Rovinj.
The island the hotel is on is just breathtaking, the pools are clean great for kids and adults alike. Plenty of choices for the evening meal, breakfast is your standard continental or English choices. The restaurants on the two islands are well priced, food tastes good and don't take advantage of it being an island location. Rooms are clean and compact, they don't have tea or coffee facilities which is the only downside and if you do have an issue with having anything but a sea view then request a sea view as there are some rooms which face onto the spa area or tennis courts etc. A special mention for the entertainment staff as they accommodated at least seven languages and put on some great shows and even though there were few children taking part in the kids clubs they worked even harder to make them happy.

Rovinj is..... Wonderful and magical. The boat ride from the island is a pleasant way to start the journey and run every hour to and from Rovinj. It is a marvel of cobbled streets, great restaurants, amazing sights.

We have just returned from a very enjoyable holiday, staying 7 nights in Hotel Istra. The hotel is quite ugly from the outside, but inside it is very clean and mostly modern. Rooms are a little small, but have all you need for a decent stay. The buffet restaurant is ok, a good variety of food, but the self-service wine kept running out! The restaurant is not very atmospheric, and is a little clinical feeling, with bright white lights and basic tables.
The swimming pool is great, at a good temperature and filled with fresh water - so no chlorine, which is really nice. Loungers get snapped up and reserved from 8am, which is something the hotel should try to tackle as we saw plenty of people that couldnt get loungers, as others leave them unattended but with towels on them,
The beach is small but nice, although you have to pay for loungers. Or, there lots of little coves around the island where you can sunbathe and swim. The island itself is a great unique aspect to staying at this hotel - you have woodland to stroll in, plus rocky coves where you can spot crabs and shellfish, and its not difficult to find peace and quiet if you want it. The ferry ride over to the island is great, and adds a bit of fun to the stay. Rovinj is well worth exploring, it is very picturesque and has lots of restaurants and bars.
Our only complaint for this hotel was the service at the a la Carte restaurant, (Lanterna). We were sat down at a table that had not been cleaned since the last occupants. This was ok, as we expected that they would clean it asap. However, it took 10 minutes before anyone took away the dirty napkins (without a word to us). After 15 minutes of no-one speaking to us, or giving us a menu, or wiping the tablecloth, we walked out and did not go back there all holiday.
We had a bite to eat at the Captains Club bar instead, which was lovely food, and a great atmosphere.
All in all, we really enjoyed our holiday and would recommend it to others. However, the hotel needs to improve a few things to really earn the 4 star status that it /Thomson markets it as.

Room Tip: Good sea views to be had from lots of the rooms, probably worth paying for this as an upgrade.

I stayed here with my husband for two weeks and had a thoroughly enjoyable time . The hotels idyllic location really makes you feel that you are getting away from it all . The hotel however I do have some niggles with .
Firstly being charged for towels , sunbeds on the beach and wifi which was only available in reception is hardly 4 star is it ?
It's a pity as the location ,room comfort , overall cleanliness , food were all pretty good .
I would return to Rovinj and maybe the hotel if the petty charges for what should be standard in a 4 star hotel are amended .

It was mine and my partners first experience of Croatia, and the island of which hotel Istra is located on is ideal for a romantic getaway; it is very picturesque and scenic. We enjoyed walks around the island viewing the sunsets on the hills and looking over the harbour/boats after dinner, the island itself takes about 30 minutes to walk all the way around. The converted monastery - now restaurant was very pretty and i love how the original/traditional aspects have still been kept.
Boat service was great, we could use it as much as we wanted and the old town of Rovinji is a must see as the entertainment over there at night is much more lively than that of the hotels. The entertainment is situated by the shore which is lovely and relaxing but the entertainment did not 'entertain' us or younger ones as it was quite subdued. We found ourselves going to find other entertainment throughout Rovinji. Lots of choice for food at the restaurant however i have never known people to eat chips and sprouts for breakfast - but it catered for all. The staff at the hotel were all so friendly especially Igor the daytime/tour-guide he helped us out a lot, showed us round Rovinji and was very friendly! I would definitely recommend the free tour-guided Rovinji trip that is offered to you on your Thomson welcome meeting.
The water activities that they sell are good value for a canoe it is 60 kuna (about £7.50) for an hour on a canoe and it was 80 kuna (about £10) for an hour for a pedallo with a slide that would fit 4 people in!
The drink prices were expensive at the hotel so i would recommend stocking up on bottles of drink from the supermarket in Rovinji and keep them in your room fridge to drink through the day!
Also you get homemade ice cream for 7 kuna (90p isn) in old town which is very nice and cheaper compared to about 10 kuna (average price of ice cream) at the hotel !

I would not book this hotel if you planned on doing the waterfall/venice/slovenia/cave excursion as they were all about a minimum of 4 hours away.. The waterfalls were 5 hours on a bus EACH way so 10 hours of your day will be on a bus, which put us off and we were disappointed as we were looking forward to seeing one of the wonders of the world!

Overall; we had a lovely stay (Weather slightly temperamental with a few overcast days!) we would definitely go again for a peaceful and relaxing holiday to bathe in the sun and for a romantic getaway.
